Lake Tahoe cross-country centers are doing their best to stay open while providing incredible Tahoe cross-country skiing experiences meant to take your mind away from what’s going on in the rest of the world, and appeal to people of all ages and abilities. Tahoe XC offers a variety of trails for all skill levels along with three warming huts that serve hot cocoa and tea. Unfortunately, fat bikes are not allowed since it ruins the quality of the groomed trails, but mountain bikes are welcome in the summer months. Unfortunately, doggy day passes are unavailable (as of January 2021) and season passes for pups are sold out. Located right off I-80 close to Sugar Bowl, Royal Gorge provides skiers with pristine backcountry conditions with the opportunity to stride through snowy meadows or trek up to a few of the most stunning vistas. What’s also great about Royal Gorge is that pups are totally welcome, and the resort offers lessons, clinics, and rentals. However, since the Resort at Squaw Creek has been closed for a while due to Covid-19, it’s best to call before you go over there to see if its hours of operation have changed. This is also the perfect place to go to get away from the hustle and bustle in and around the Village, and these types of activities are easy enough to do with the whole family. Northstar is also one of the only places in North Lake Tahoe that allows fat tire biking and provides free access to Epic season passholders. Formerly known as Incline Meadows XC, the group is relying on community support to keep its trails groomed and work towards its long-term vision of expanding and offering accessible winter recreation to everyone. The group currently grooms a trail that runs parallel to the Mt. Rose Highway and another at Spooner Lake. Call 209-258-7248 for more information. On the southwest side of the lake near Emerald Bay and off Highway 89, cross country skiers can be seen sliding around Camp Richardson (although fees are required to access the groomed trails), the Tallac Historic Site, and Fallen Leaf Lake Campground. Stay on Highway 89 past the Y and find a couple of skiable loops at Washoe Meadows State Park. Or veer onto Highway 50 heading towards the casinos and stop off at Bijou Park or Lake Tahoe Community College to get some turns in. This wasn’t by design, but I kept an open mind and quickly discovered that cross-country skiing was the answer to my dilemma. Lake Tahoe received an extraordinarily normal amount of snowfall which enabled the cross-country ski center to remain open every day from Thanksgiving to mid-April. For a seasoned ski bum this is a drop in the bucket, but for me it was a revelation. There’s a lot of support at my job for becoming a better cross-country skier. And as with any language, the more fluent you are at speaking and understanding it, the further you can travel (figuratively and physically). But it was new to me, and I wanted to see how fluent I had become in my study of cross-country skiing. Since it was late in the season the snowpack was bountiful, but generally stable. I was also in great physical condition and confident enough in my technique to negotiate low angle terrain (i.e. I would choose specific lines that were commensurate with my skiing abilities). I became hot and tired while skiing uphill and cold when I either stopped or the wind picked up. I captured some video. I did a little journaling before going to bed. I fell on a couple of occasions. I took my skis off completely at other times in order to hike down some of the steeper sections that I wasn’t comfortable skiing. My sleep was less than ideal, but I witnessed both an extraordinary sunset and sunrise. This map is only for reference and shows the general route for cross-country skiing from Forest Service Road 051 near the east side of Luther Pass up to Thompson Peak. Your trip may look slightly different than mine based on your specific route selection. You don’t necessarily have to stay within the lines when traveling over snow. Always carry a traditional topographic map and compass when traveling in the backcountry. This map is only for reference and shows the general route for cross-country skiing from Thompson Peak over to the west side of Luther Pass.
I have a technical question: what skis and bindings did you use (i.e., ski width, metal edges, NNN-BC or 3-pin bindings, etc.)? Did you use climbing skins or did you feel they were necessary during the trip? Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the story. Within the grip zone you can fix what Fischer calls “EZ skins.” Keep in mind that they’re not full skins like you’d find with alpine touring gear. In anything less than those hard-packed conditions, I just diagonal stride normally (i.e. use the grip zone as intended) or herringbone and sidestep when appropriate. Mounted on my skis are a set of NNN BC Magnum (manual) bindings. For ski poles on that trip I used Backcountry Access (BCA) aluminum Scepter poles. Those poles have full baskets and a versatile hand grip. In fact, I have friends who moved to the area for the resort skiing and now, decades later, are dedicated cross-country skiers who hung up their resort passes long ago.
And in my humble opinion, Lake Tahoe's cross-country skiing compares to some of the best in the country, because of the beauty that surrounds the trails. Please continue reading to learn about the impressive cross-country and skate skiing parks that make up our outdoor playground. Set up alongside their beginner ski area, Tahoe Donner has created miles of fun with more than 100 kilometers of groomed trails, including trails designated for diagonal striding, skate skiing as well as snowshoeing. The trails are known for their picturesque treed glades, gentle rolling hills and long meadows along the Euer Valley. In total there are 4,800 acres of skiable terrain, which is split into 56 trails (of which four are for snowshoeing only) within three track systems. To make things even better, there are five warming huts along the way to keep you toasty. It is the largest private trail system in all of California, with 6,000 acres of terrain and more than 200 kilometers of trail, of which 90 kilometers are groomed with skating lanes on the inside track. The immense area is now owned by Sugar Bowl Resort, assuring a high level of grooming and amenities. Some of the benefits that come with being linked to the ski resort include snowmaking for some of the trails and an impressive fleet of snowcats, not to mention chair lifts to help access some of the steeper trails. This is a full-service cross-country ski area, complete with rental equipment, a ski school, 10 warming huts, four cafes and even a full-time ski patrol. It is an impressive endeavor worthy of a visit. Located just off of Interstate 80, just west of Donner Summit via the Soda Springs exit, visiting Royal Gorge couldn't be easier. Their nordic center is open to the public and includes more than 25 kilometers of trails that are groomed nightly to competition standards.
Another fantastic aspect of their trails is the wide, overlapping loops that allow skiers of any ability to be no more than 5 kilometers from their cozy ski lodge, making them safe at all times. There are a ton of terrain options, and the center has done a fabulous job at offering those training for athletic greatness a place to sharpen their abilities while at the same time giving a playground for those new to the sport. Another bonus of the ASC Training Center is its stellar location on Donner Summit at 7,200 feet, helping to ensure plentiful snow all season long. With a plethora of trails for all abilities, a ski school and clinics, Tahoe XC is considered by many locals to be the favorite place to get their cross-country skiing on. Located smack dab in the middle of one of Tahoe City's best neighborhoods, it also has a feeling of being a part of the community. There are fantastic views of Lake Tahoe from the 65 kilometers of groomed trails and skating lanes as well as a small day lodge, a cafe and a rental program. They also offer skiing for free to anyone older than age 69 or younger than 10. Dogs are welcome as well. You can enjoy a leisurely approach to the trails with a ride upon the gondola or quad chairlifts as well as manicured cross-country trails. There are rentals available as well as snowshoes, giving options for those new to the sport. A bonus of skiing here is that your lift ticket is interchangeable for the alpine area and the cross-country ski trails, giving you even more options. To give the experience that extra special touch, there are warming huts and picnic tables along the trails. Hot tip: One of their best trails takes you from the top of the resort all the way to Tahoe City.As a part of the Resort at Squaw Creek, the area is the resort's impressive golf course in the summer, giving it a nice dual purpose.
Smaller than the other cross-country ski areas, with 18 kilometers of groomed tracks, it still has trails that range from beginner to expert. They offer rentals and lessons as well. These trails aren't groomed or for skate skiing, but they give you the immense beauty in exchange. Transitioning their summer hiking and biking trails, Camp Richardson becomes a mini winter playground for cross-country skiing, sledding and snowshoeing. They have a rental program and a small shop to help outfit you in warm attire. They also have a strict no dogs policy. These family fun areas are accessed most easily by parking at the Forest Service gates and then playing in the Washoe Meadows State Park as well as the Angora Ridge zone, which was burnt in a forest fire in 2007, making it more open and easier for cross-country skiing and backcountry skiing. This is a pass-only park, but it does offer 5 to 7 kilometers of nicely groomed trails and skate skiing. With its awe-inspiring scenery and terrain perfect for all abilities, Kirkwood has created a cross-country playground worthy of visit. It has three interconnected trail systems, two trailheads, lessons for groups or privates, tours offered by experienced guides as well as ski, skate ski and snowshoe rentals.
