Short-wheelbase versions are sold in Japan and Europe; long-wheelbase versions in Australia and North America. Toyota of Japan also sells the longer-wheelbase version as the Toyota Vanguard ( ??????????, Toyota Vangado ) at Toyopet Store locations. Japanese versions are sold at two different Toyota dealerships, Toyota Corolla Store and Toyota Netz Store.Design and development commenced in 1989 under code-name 153T, with design approval and start of production development in the second half of 1991 on the 3-door version and in 1993 for the 5-door version. In March 1995, the 5-door was launched and introduced to the US in January 1996, with standard dual airbags. In the US, a 2.0-liter straight-four producing 89 kW (119 hp; 121 PS) was available. Both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive were available, and the RAV4 could be had with either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. It was named the 1997 Automobile of the Year by Automobile Magazine. The 1996-1997 model years had headlamps with a bracket push in type, dual filament bulb. The rear used round socket type bulbs as well. In 1997 for the 1998 model year, the RAV4 was slightly restyled on the front and rear fascias, and a soft top three-door was made available. Power was increased slightly to 95 kW (127 hp; 129 PS). In June 1999, the two-door hardtop was dropped from the American lineup, leaving the five-door and soft top models. The 1998-2000 models used a single filament headlamp, with two different beams per housing (low and high beam) opposed to the original single beam with dual filaments. In Japan, the 2.0-liter 3S-GE BEAMS engine with 132 kW (177 hp; 179 PS) was also available. However the wiring for the clock is still behind the dash, thus a clock can be installed in models sold without.Like the previous model, the XA20 was available in three- and five-door configurations and was constructed on a platform that shared Carina and Corolla elements.

Development began in 1995, with a design freeze in the first half of 1998.Some RAV4s came with anti-lock braking system, electronic stability control, air conditioning, a height-adjustable driver's seat, cruise control, a six-speaker CD stereo and power windows, mirrors and seats. A sport package added a mesh grille, bonnet scoop, color-keyed door handles, a roof rack, silver sport pedals, heated mirrors, gray-painted bumpers and fender flares, and sport fabric seats. Other options included alloy wheels, heated seats, a sunroof and keyless entry. 16-inch wheels were standard; larger tires were available on all-wheel-drive models. The main differentiation between the two models was in appearance. Edge models came with unpainted grey bumpers and side cladding, mirrors, and door handles, and featured steel rims. Cruiser models gained body-colored (painted) bumpers and moldings, mirrors, and door handles, alloy wheels, and ABS brakes. All models came equipped with a brand-new 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine featuring VVT (variable valve timing), resulting in improved power and torque, as well as fuel consumption. Permanent all-wheel-drive was a feature. Options were ABS brakes (on the Edge), and air conditioning (on all models). The second generation RAV4 enjoyed success in Australia, where it became the best-selling SUV in the country in 2001, overtaking its rival the Honda CR-V for the first time.In the United States the safety structure was improved and Vehicle Stability Control made standard. The RAV4's 2.0-liter engine was upgraded with a new 2.4-liter engine in the US, producing 120 kW (160 hp; 160 PS) and 220 N?m (162 lb?ft). Other countries got mostly 5-door models with the 2.0 liter VVT-i engine. Automatic electric air conditioning also became available. European models got a new catalytic converter because of the new European emission policy. The new model also got an electric throttle.

The CV also received painted bumpers, which came in either silver or body-colored shades, depending on the body color. In addition, the model range was given a subtle facelift, consisting largely of a new front bumper with circular fog lights and white turn signals instead of the older orange lights. The CV Sport model was short-lived, lasting only a year, and was introduced primarily to stimulate sales until the new model arrived in early 2006.The short-wheelbase model is sold only in Japan, Europe and New Zealand (diesel only in NZ), with the long-wheelbase RAV4 sold in Australia, New Zealand and North America. Toyota discontinued the Vanguard in November 2013 in favour of the redesigned XU60 Harrier. As the RAV4 continued to grow, it became expensive to own in Japan due to the exterior dimensions and engine displacement placing it in the upper tax bracket as defined by Japanese government dimension regulations and annual road tax obligations. The extended-length RAV4 is larger by 21 in interior volume from the last generation and now has an available third-row seat for children (North America and Japan only). The RAV4 can still be had in either front-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive in North America and Japan; however most countries only sell the all-wheel-drive version. The Limited model gets a different front grille and bumper cover from other models. The Sport model features a bigger spoiler and red badging along with an option on the V6 model to have a rear door without the externally mounted spare tire ( run-flat tires are used on this model). Much of the interior remains as before. In 2009, it was also the first time for the Canadian market to have a 2WD model sold in Canada. The X and G can be ordered with either front-wheel-drive or AWD. The Sport model with over fenders is AWD only. The extended-length RAV4 is sold in Japan as the Toyota Vanguard, released on August 30, 2007.

It is sold in five- and seven-passenger versions and slots between the regular RAV4 and Kluger. As it is often the case in Japan-only vehicles, the Vanguard comes loaded with high-tech gadgets, including steering-assisted stability control, keyless entry and satellite navigation. The Toyota Vanguard was facelifted in 2010.The V6 was available from 2007.This model uses the 1AZ-FE four-cylinder, inline 16-valve engine with DOHC and VVT-i. The output for the 2.0-liter RAV4 in Malaysia is at 112 kW (150 hp; 152 PS) at 6,000 rpm with a torque of 194 N?m (143 lb?ft) at 4,000 rpm while the 2.4-liter uses the 2AZ-FE engine. The V6 model has 201 kW (270 hp; 273 PS). In model year 2009, a slightly larger 133 kW (178 hp; 181 PS) 2.5-liter 2AR-FE inline-four replaced the previous 124 kW (166 hp; 169 PS) 2.4-liter engine. Either four-cylinder engine came equipped with a four-speed automatic transmission. The North American RAV4 with 3.5-liter 2GR-FE V6 engine is fitted with a five-speed automatic transmission. All US models feature Toyota's Star Safety System which includes Vehicle Stability Control. The new RAV4 topped Toyota SUV sales in the United States for the first time. The new generation RAV4, which is the current model, had more features as standard equipment. Base and Limited trims continue to be available, but on the Limited trim 4WD became an option and the Base model now added 17-inch steel wheels but the roof rack was still standard in both trims. For the refresh of 2009 the roof rack in the Base model was eliminated as standard equipment and the Sport trim was added to the line-up. Up to 2008MY all RAV4s in Mexico had four-cylinder engines but for 2009 the Sport model became available with the V6 engine, although the four-cylinder engine was still available. The Limited trim was only available with the V6 engine and 4WD traction.

For 2010, the RAV4 in Mexico has been simplified again to two trims but now the Limited trim was dropped and consequently killed the 4WD option, while the Base and Sport trims remained unchanged from 2009. The RAV4 in Mexico has experienced good acceptance since its introduction.Trim levels were the 2.0 Classic, 2.0 Luxury, 2.0 Luxury Navi, 2.4 Luxury and 2.4 Luxury Navi. The 2.0-litre 1AZ-FE and 2.4-litre 2AZ-FE were standard paired to a 5 speed manual and 4 speed automatic gearbox. It also had chrome bars below the front and rear bumpers. The license plate was also moved to the bottom bumper area to make way for the RAV4 logo and a rear foglamp. Front and rear parking sensors are also standard. Also, unlike the dual wheelbase strategy employed by the previous XA30 model, the XA40 was only sold in a single wheelbase (corresponding to the long wheelbase XA30). RAV4 Hybrids were available in both front and all-wheel drive variants. The all-wheel edition came equipped with a second, 50 kW high-voltage, rear mounted electric motor that offers increased traction and a 1,750-pound (790 kg) towing capacity. US sales began in early January 2013.The Harrier replaced the long-wheelbase model in Japan, previously badged as the Vanguard.Engine choices included a 2.0- and 2.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline, and 2.0- and 2.2-liter turbodiesels. The XA40 RAV4 in China came standard with the 2 litre 6ZR-FE and 2.5 litre 5AR-FE gasoline engine. 6 speed manual, automatic and CVT gearboxes are standard. Seven trim levels were available with prices ranging from 183,800 to 272,800 yuan (25,680 to 38,120 USD).The facelift debuted with the RAV4 Hybrid shown at the April 2015 New York International Auto Show. The facelift included redesigned LED front and rear lamps and updated speedometer dials with full color TFT multi information display. It included dark red body color, extended wheel arches, 20-inch alloy wheels and matte painted front and rear bumpers.

Since its adoption, the IIHS has noticed several automakers making non-symmetrical modifications to their vehicles, including the RAV4. Another small overlap test was conducted on a number of vehicles, including a 2015 RAV4, but was conducted on the passenger side instead. It is built on GA-K platform, which is also shared with eighth generation Camry, fifth generation Avalon and seventh generation Lexus ES. Both 4-cylinder gasoline-powered and gasoline-electric hybrid ( Hybrid Synergy Drive ) variants would remain available. The engine is a 2.5-liter inline-4 paired with an 8-speed Direct Shift Automatic which increases horsepower by up to 15 on gasoline variants. It has Multi Terrain Select providing operators an ability to maximize traction when driving on sand, mud, rock, or dirt. A 7-inch multi-touch screen is available standard with Entune 3.0, Apple CarPlay and Amazon Alexa. A larger screen with JBL Audio and a Wi-Fi hotspot is optional on some trim levels. It has QI Wireless Charging with up to 5 USB Ports. Like most concurrent Toyota models, it has Toyota Safety Sense 2.0.The fifth generation RAV4 for the Japanese market was revealed on 20 February 2019 and went on sale on 10 April 2019 at Corolla Store and Netz dealers. The GX, GXL and Cruiser trims have two engine options: the 2.0 L gasoline and the 2.5 L hybrid, while the Edge trim has only one engine option: the 2.5 L gasoline. The GX trim is available with either 6-speed manual transmission or CVT, while the GXL and Cruiser trims as well as the GX, GXL and Cruiser hybrid variants are only available with CVT. The Edge trim is available with 8-speed automatic transmission. It is produced and sold by FAW Toyota. It is powered by a differently-tuned 2.5 L A25A-FXS engine with the same power output as the standard hybrid version but with uprated torque to 228 N?m (168 lb?ft) at 2,800 rpm. It has a total power output of 225 kW (302 hp), which is 62 kW (83 hp) higher than the regular hybrid version.

The RAV4's base engine is a 2.5-liter, four-cylinder rated at 179 hp, mated to an aging four-speed automatic transmission. Those looking for more power will want to opt for the 269 horsepower 3.5-liter V-6 and five-speed automatic combo that launches the RAV4 from 0-60 mph in just a tad over six seconds. Both engines are available in front or all-wheel drive configurations. RAV4 customers have their choice among three trim levels: base, Sport and Limited. Air conditioning, an auxiliary jack, and keyless entry are all standard, while navigation, leather, and power seats are just a few of the optional features available depending on trim level. Credited with starting the cute-ute craze back in 1996, the Toyota RAV4 has been one of Toyota's best sellers ever since due to a versatile interior and smooth, car-like ride. And with a passenger capacity of seven and up to 73 cubic feet of cargo room, the 2012 Toyota RAV4's overall interior space rivals that of many larger SUVs.

Body style: Crossover SUV Engines: 2.5L I-4, 3.5L V-6 Transmissions: 4-speed automatic, 5-speed automatic Models: Base, Sport, Limited The 2012 Toyota RAV4 continues with few changes. All models will get a new audio system with an updated head unit. Sport and Limited models will become available with Toyota's new Entune infotainment system, which adds a long list of high-tech functionality. Entune has the ability to connect with and control personal smart phones via voice control or vehicle buttons. Entune will also feature a number of mobile apps including Pandora, Bing, MovieTickets.com, and OpenTable. The RAV4 has grown with each generation. The current model has an overall length of 181.9 inches, which is almost 20 inches longer than the first-gen, four-door RAV4 that debuted back in 1996. The signature side-hinged rear door is standard and features an exterior-mounted spare tire. An appearance package features a unique rear hatch that removes the spare tire (run flats are used). The RAV4 comes standard with 17-inch wheels, while the Sport model adds visual interest with 18-inch wheels and blackout headlamp housing. The 2012 RAV4 comes standard with seating for five passengers, though optional third-row seats boosts capacity to seven. And with up to 73 cubic feet of cargo room, interior space is another strong selling point for the RAV4. Cloth seats are standard, but customers will have the choice to upgrade to leather surfaces by opting for the Sport or Limited models equipped with a Premium package. A sunroof is optional on all trims, while privacy glass is standard on the Sport and Limited models. The RAV4's standard 2.5-liter, 179-hp four-cylinder engine mated to an outdated four speed automatic should be adequate for most situations, but those who plan to haul lots of passengers and cargo on a regular basis should opt for the 3.5-liter V-6. The stronger engine is rated at 269 hp, which leads many crossovers in the segment.

The six-cylinder is mated to a five-speed automatic and propels the RAV4 from 0-60 mph in about six seconds. The electric power steering provides good feel and the independent suspension keeps the ride comfortable and quiet. Six airbags are standard on the RAV4, including curtain airbags that offer protect for the first two rows of seats. Also standard is Toyota's Star Safety System, which includes a long list of features including Enhanced Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist, Traction Control (TRAC), Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), and Smart Stop Technology (SST). The RAV4 also includes driver and passenger side active headrests, which reduces the chance of whip lash injury.Ford Escape. Showing RAV4 Sport. The optional 269-horsepower V6 is very quick while still managing 27 mpg on the highway. The 4-cylinder includes a 4-speed automatic transmission, while the V6 is matched to a 5-speed automatic; both transmissions have a grade logic that reduces the frequency of shifting on steep, curvy roads. V6 models and 4-cylinder models with the third-row seat, also get Hill-start Assist Control and Downhill Assist Control devices that help maintain control when negotiating steep, slippery slopes. Fuel economy is quite good with either engine. A 4-cylinder RAV4 equipped with front-wheel-drive returns 22 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. The front-wheel-drive V6 is rated at 19 city, 27 highway, yet it is still capable of propelling the RAV4 to 60 mph in under seven seconds. The RAV4's interior is more on par with mid-size crossover SUVs. Third-row seating is available, and helps the SUV accommodate seven. Models without the third-row seat get an added under-floor storage compartment, while the third-row seats fold neatly into the floor. Safety features include front seat-mounted side airbags, front active headrests and roll-sensing side-curtain bags that cover the first and second rows. Anti-lock brakes with brake assist are also included, as is a sophisticated electronic stability control system that is integrated with the RAV4's electronic power steering. The RAV4 is offered in Base, Sport and Limited trims; all are offered with either engine and drive system. Equipment even on the Base model is generous, including keyless entry, cruise control, air conditioning and a 6-speaker MP3-compatible sound system with Bluetooth connectivity. The Sport brings a sport-tuned suspension, larger alloy wheels, fog lamps, roof rails and other appearance extras, while the Limited steps up to a power driver's seat, dual-zone climate control, steering-wheel audio controls, chrome interior accents, integrated satellite radio and a 6-disc CD changer.

Top options include a moonroof, leather upholstery, heated seats and a 9-speaker JBL sound system with Bluetooth hands-free interface. Toyota also offers an Appearance Package which significantly changes the RAV4's look, omitting the spare tire that otherwise hangs off the back door and replacing it with a redesigned rear door and run-flat tires. The package also includes chrome accents throughout, a bright exhaust tip and unique steel doorsills, plus color-keyed power heated side mirrors with turn signal indicators. In the affected vehicles, the brake system contains a brake actuator that adjusts the fluid pressure of each wheel cylinder. An electrical component within the actuator may experience an increased resistance resulting in the illumination of various warning lights, including those for the Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) system, Antilock Brake System (ABS), and Traction Control system. The recall is expected to begin early April 2014. Peterson 5.0 out of 5 stars I tested the 2016, 2015, 2013, and then found my 2012. It's larger inside and the visibility is way better than the newer models. The negatives are minor for all the positives. It has a smaller gas tank than my last car, but I'm adjusting. And it's seriously heavy, with the spare tire on it. Just don't let it bounce back and try to close on you. I love the hidden storage areas for security. It handles great and had good pick up when you need it. Gas mileage is average- not great but it's an SUV. Oh! And I drove like a champ on all that snow and ice we got last winter!! I love my Rav4 and plan on keeping it forever. My family out grew it so I moved on to another vehicle. I towed a pop up camper with ease, had plenty of power in the mountains of Colorado and Wyoming. It handled great and never gave me trouble. The 4WD system and traction control worked great in the winter. Because of the spare being on the back it hadpretty good trunk space. I had mine for 87,000 miles and never had an issue. I only changed oil and brakes. I'll be looking for another one when my daughter starts driving. However since the spare is external there is a nice sized storage compartment where the spare would normally go. The RAV 4 handles well, I assume costlier European models handle much better?I started doing a lot of events with my side business and needed room to transport tables and supplies. I test drove the RAV4 and fell in love. Of course, they showed me the limited edition with the leather seats, sun roof and power everything. It wasn't too big to drive like some other SUV's I have seen, I feel totally comfortable driving it and it is still very spacious inside.

I was concerned being a larger vehicle it would be bad on gas, but I get through a whole week driving to and from work and taking the kids to school on one tank, just like I did with my car. Definitely a great purchase, I love my lil' SUV.LOVE the RAVS. Runs great and it runs as fast as you want to go. Bought both used. The 2010 bought in 2012. Was in two accidents the first 5 months. A Volvo rear ended me as I was stopped in traffic they were on the phone. Then a big Land Rover in snow smashed into my front end as he skidded in snow into me. A 4X4 will not stop you from skidding. All was fixed and the RAV is still running great. Drive MA to VA once or twice a year with no problems. The 2012 bought in 2016 with 27K miles is the last year for the V6 so we bought one for my wife. She loves the size, height and SPEED.It's the base model with a V6 that gets about 23 mpg. This vehicle has 75,000 miles on it and the only thing I've put into it is gas, oil and tires. The OEM Bridgestone tires wore out very quickly even though I rotated them every 5,000 miles. It's comfortable, reliable, and the V6 engine has plenty of power. Unfortunately, the V6 is no long available and it no longer comes with a full-size spare tire, so when it comes time to replace it, I'll probably buy something different.I was very disappointed in it, With less than 40,000 miles the lifters needed replacing, a chassis water leak took the dealer four months to correct with a small lake in it every time it rained and some of the extra assessors that I would never have ordered were cheap and I finally had the dealer remove. I never planned on getting another. My wife talked me into buying the 2012, it has been flawless and a far more comfortable, powerful and utilitarian than it's predecessor. My wife bought a new 2014, though different, I like it as much.It is Toyota quality like my Land Cruiser, not a low end desposable car like a Vega or Escort.
