They have good CC photos and writeup on p 142 of their NA guide; why was the CC excluded from the regional, as common practice. Sibley NG NAS Peterson western regional guides all have CC entries. Docking one star from an otherwise good guide hoping the next edition will correct this issue. Amazon did good shipping in a real box instead of a flimsy envelope, where heavy books have been damaged. But this has become my 'go to' guide for identification because of the extensive text descriptions. Each bird is described for every season, age, gender and flight display with helpful comparisons with and differences from similar birds. I've learned that a lot of birders prefer drawings in field guides as opposed to photographs as are used in this Stokes guide. I think anyone with more than a passing interest in birding would really enjoy and appreciate this guide!I currently have 1996 edition in our home. I was excited to see the new edition has more photos, HOWEVER, it NO longer includes the nesting information regarding each bird.not where they nest, how many eggs, time to hatch (incubation), time to fledge.nothing! The 1996 edition includes all of this information, but this new 2013 edition does not. Such an important part to include. I am so disappointed. I wish I had purchased a second copy of the first edition.Nicely bound paperback should hold up well in the field. The range graphics on the pages help a lot. Photos are very good. Would have given 5 stars if publisher had included nesting information that is in the previous edition.I found myself borrowing this from friends while birding as it's the best combination of usable photos and summary descriptions for field use. I find myself referring to it every time I spot new birds or verifying those I can't positively identify without help.I have two copies of the Eastern and have worn them out. The photos are so good. I like seeing the birds in different plumages as it really helps with ID.

Descriptions are also very good. Happy to have the Western for my collection. The book was in excellent condition. And arrived quickly.Better pictures than they had in older versions. I really like the color coded index. The dimensions on this version are a little large. It won't fit in most jacket pockets. But finding what I am looking for is very easy.Brilliant reference book for bird watching in the USA. Couldn't miss the Western book at such a good price. It's very comprehensive and has great illustrations. The guide has a fine introductory page as to a key to the guide.Lots of information! One thing. My package was opened. Not sure why. Please try again. Please try again. Please try again. Please try your request again later. Is that butterfly outside your window a Monarch or a Giant Swallowtail. I bought this book for a small child but really it would be great for anyone who is wanting to learn more about birds. The pictures are nice as well.We both feed and enjoy watching birds in our yards. My neighbor is more of a novice and would often call me and try to describe a bird she'd seen, for me to tell her what it was. She LOVES this book. She happily told me all about the junco she had seen, and relayed when they arrive and how long they remain in our area. The color plates and easy system to find a bird based on color and size make this a perfect beginners bird book. This has not only been great for her to memorize even more birds, but has actually been really useful when trying to identify birds coming to our new feeders. Having it organized by color was genius. This is by far the best bird species book we have in terms of being a practical look up to identify species. The only negative is that the map doesn't seem accurate, or perhaps is just outdated. We definitely have both house and purple finches at our house and at my mother's house and the map does not show them being in Minnesota. Every other guide I look up shows them being very common here.Take a good look at the birds colors at your feeder, find the tab with the same color and flip thru and find your guest in no time at all. You'll learn the common name and some basic info about the particular species. That's enough for me, I don't expect this book to make me an expert, I just would like to know the names of as many visitors as I can without spending hours on each sighting. You'll also come to realize you're probably going to have to start taking closer looks at those birds. You'll find that several different species can have identical colors but what separates them are things like beak colors, wing tip colors, tail color, tail shape,,you'll figure out the rest.I gotta have it handy at all times just in case I come across any birds. The guide has enough info for the beginners.

I love the colorful pictures it provides. I learned the names of a lot of birds. Thanks the Stokes for all the hard work they do.I gotta have it handy at all times just in case I come across any birds. Thanks the Stokes for all the hard work they do.Thanks to this book, we've easily identified over ten different species (both sexes too), in the couple weeks of having this book. The book is a handy size that easily fits in yours hands and is great to have lying around near the window for easy reference. The book is organized by the color of the birds so when you see one you can usually identify it right away. The book also goes into small detail about the birds' habits and native areas. I highly recommend checking out this book if you're looking for your first basic bird reference book.Very happy with this I gave it to my neighbors son who turned 9 and is autistic. He loves watching birds and this book is so much better than I expected. Color coded and shows the males and females so you can look them up and determine what your seeing. As soon as I have it to him his mom and him went through the entire book and wouldn't put it down.Perfect for a young child too, who it is for.He loved it. Very good Pics of common birds in our area. The kids had fun identifying birds they saw and learning more about their habitat, nesting and egg identification. Very easy reference for kids. Groups Discussions Quotes Ask the Author To see what your friends thought of this book,I was stationed in California other than a trip to the famous Yellowstone region. As a birding enthusiast, it was only natural that I began to observe the birds in my surroundings and was curious to know their identities. I thus looked for resources and a trip to the local public library resulted in me scanning a wide variety of books and guides with special emphasis on different geographical regions or the type of birds. Eventually I c I was stationed in California other than a trip to the famous Yellowstone region. Eventually I checked out two books and this field guide was one of them. What appealed to me was how it was both comprehensive and user-friendly. It was a perfect size for a guide and accompanied me to most excursions outside the city and to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. The book begins with plenty of practical information on how to be a birder in the 21st century, there is a guide on the basic anatomical parts of birds, an instructive section on how to use the book and a very useful guide to common urban birds.

The color photographs in the book are of excellent quality - it is quite a relief to use a guide that has photos instead of paintings or sketches as photos better represent the birds thus making identification easier. The guide categorizes the birds according to their species. Each bird has a page devoted to it with all the necessary information on it - photos, description on identification, the feeding and nesting habits and any other details worthy of noting. In addition, there is a map of the United States with different coloring to show the year-round range of the bird. The voice of the bird and the conservation status are indicated as well. What makes this guide extra helpful is a color tab index which makes it very easy to go to the page you need to. There is also an alphabetical index in the front and back cover pages. All in all, this is an excellent birding tool. When it was time to leave the country and return home, it was hard to say goodbye to the new birds I had gotten to know and return the book back to its abode. The book groups birds according to their species. Each grouping contains color pictures of the sub-species of birds in that species, together with a brief commentary as to identification, feeding and nesting habits, habitat, voice, and other behavioral traits. On the page describing each sub-species of bird, a map of the western United States is presented, with areas shaded in yellow, green and blue showing the summer The book groups birds according to their species. On the page describing each sub-species of bird, a map of the western United States is presented, with areas shaded in yellow, green and blue showing the summer, winter and year-round range of the particular sub-species. We have some bird feeders in the courtyard area of our home. This book has been a good resource to help us identify the different varieties of birds which visit our feeders.

This is a good guide to augment other guides (like Sibley, National Geographic), if for nothing else, the large photographs are excellent! This is a good guide to augment other guides (like Sibley, National Geographic), if for nothing else, the large photographs are excellent! They are both wonderful. Another Bargain find for my birthday! Yippee! There are no discussion topics on this book yet. In each volume, the taxonomically arranged species accounts (mostly one per page; occasionally two similar species are combined) include common and scientific names; one to three color photos; terse comments on identifying features, feeding, nesting, other behavior, habitat, voice, and population trends; and a range map. Most species of regular occurrence in the region are included; a few extremely local rarities are omitted. The text is clearly written, accurate, and up-to-date; the 1995 AOU (American Ornithologists' Union) Checklist changes are included. With so many other North American bird guides from the Audubon Society, Roger Tory Peterson, and others currently in print, any new guide should meet some special need. These works are particularly suited to novice birders. Putting all the data about a species on a single page facilitates use (e.g., it isn't possible to depict every varying plumage of all species), and the intentional omission of rarities that barely reach the region is valid. The inclusion of population data is unique and valuable. These titles supplement but do not supplant existing guides; the appropriate regional volume is recommended for public and academic libraries.?Paul B.
