I'm trying to pull out the engine for the very first time. In my particular case, I find this book almost useless other than using it for torque specs.With words and pictures. But like a gremlin, don't ever get it wet. Quality has decreased a lot over the years, as they now use a very flimsy style of recycled paper (Honestly it feels as cheap as newspaper). If water ever touches it, not to mention grease or other substances that you may encounter when working on a vehicle, it almost self-destructs. Even with the abundance of information on the internet, there are so many different, and conflicting information sources, sometimes it is better to go with hardcopy. The price point makes it worth it, the quality makes it lose 2 stars from 5.It is decent, however, they are too general with the different models and trims. It will show a pic of a 4Runner then later in the sequence a taco, then a t100. The General maintainence is very good and the basics too. In depth, it leaves a lot more vague information that can have you guessing. It gives great info on how to change a timing belt, but crummy info on, say how to remove a grill or replace light bulbs and head lamps.
It has its credits and deficiencies but definitely better than nothing.I preferred the way they were written and illustrated to Chilton. That said, I was very disappointed in this manual when I began looking into the various jobs I was considering performing on my Tacoma. My first impression, in agreement with other reviews, was that this manual tries to cover too many different models. Because of this, some of the procedures become muddled and hard to follow for a specific vehicle. This is absolutely unacceptable and it kinda makes me angry. Specifically, I wanted procedures for removing the differentials from my axle housings, particularly the front, as the back seems pretty straight forward. It's one of the reasons i bought the manual. Instead, I got nothing. I'm wondering if tearing down and rebuilding an entire engine isn't too difficult for the DIYer, what's so frikkin' tough about changing ring and pinions, or carrier bearings, or inspecting your ring and pinions for chips or cracks. Come on, Haynes, give us the procedures and let us decide if the tooling is too expensive or the skills are beyond us. Don't make that decision for us. Based on a COMPLETE tear down and rebuild. I think not.To general, entire procedures are missing, pictures are not particularly well labeled, etc. I ended up getting a factory service manual online and while its a big book it satisfies my needs much better. Do not buy this book.The paper is so thin that you can see the print on the opposite page bleeding through and this makes it difficult to read. I wish I'd have known that before purchase and I would have spent more for a higher quality product. If you wan't something useful that will last and that you can keep with the vehicle and provide to a new owner when you sell, then this is not the manual you want and I'd suggest you shop around more.It's concise, useful, and inexpensive. It does not contain all of the detailed information that would be in a Toyota factory manual.

I wont forsake my old Xj but if that jeep and the titanic ever birthed a creature it had to be the toyota tacoma. Only thing it could used to make it on par with the legacy of the XJ woulda been a little more go power. But I refuse to complain. I said that head held highest, because I promise on no other vehicle will u ever see a 2.7ltr engine do what they done here. Very little maintenance required. We’ve had it since 2001, and it’s the 2WD extended cab “low boy” model with the 2.4L engine. I’ve learned “low boy” is what they call the Tacoma’s that are low to the ground on tiny wheels. This truck has been nothing short of phenomenal, no task has been too big thus far. And I don’t mean to jinx reliability, but nothing on this truck has ever broken. Nothing. Ever. Same radiator, power steering pump, ac compressor, you name it. This truck has all of the parts it left the factory with, with the exception of fan belts, brakes, etc.But given that my other car is a BMW, I can’t fathom that not even so much as a screw has come loose all these years, and we do not baby this thing. Of course we take care of regular maintenance, but we use it for truck stuff. It hauls stuff, it does work, it tows. Never heavy towing but what it can tow, it tows very well, nice and stable. Heaviest I’ve towed with it is about 3,000 pounds and it didn’t break a sweat. The model we have is rated for 3,500 lbs. The neighbor a couple houses down has a burgundy 99 just like ours, except he has the manual, and he’s down 431,000 miles. On the same clutch. I don’t know how smart that is, or if it’s something I would do, but it’s still impressive you’ve got to admit. But same story with him, he hasn’t needed to replace anything. This is THE MOST reliable truck ever. I’ve also seen people complain about gas mileage, but they’re all V6 owners. The only thing the 2.4 can do better than all the other engines is sip fuel; we get about 25 average. It’s also fun to drive, as trucks go.
The steering is totally numb but the center of gravity is low because it’s no higher off the ground than a Camry, which means you can toss it around. The buzzy little 4-pot is fun to wind all the way out too, it makes a surprisingly throaty noise. It’s not exaggeration to say if you never want to replace a single part for as long as you live, outside of regular maintenance of course, get an OLD Tacoma. Down sides. Slow. 0-60 with the 2.4L engine is at least 11 seconds but it’s fine in daily driving. Just start picking up speed early on an on-ramp lol. Ride is very bouncy but bumps are also harsh. It’s not brilliant, to say the least, but in a truck with a huge steering wheel, a cloth bench seat and crank windows, it’s very fitting. In my opinion it adds to the experience of that “old truck” feel. I like it, personally. If your number 1 priority is comfort, you shouldn’t be looking at 20 year old Toyotas, haha. But if you’re dead set on one, consider the 4x4 models with the long-travel suspension and fatter tires. One comfort element I will give the Tacoma credit for, is the headroom is great. I’m 6’5 and I have about 3-4 inches of head room, no joke. So in short, the only downsides are exactly what you would you expect in a 23 year old truck. Definitely would recommend to anybody. Love the 4door convenience and the 4WD works great. Even has a cassette player. Also, Toyota put on a new frame on the truck having the recall affecting this year. Gears that pop out of gear while driving. I have a 1996 Tacoma that I bought new. In the intervening time, I've put close to 220,000 miles on it. Around 4-5 years ago, 1st and second gear began popping out especially during warm-up. Fearing that the repair for the problem might be extremely costly, I put off the inevitable for several years.The problem grew worse until I found I was holding 3 of the 5 gears in place. In order to perform this repair, you will need a Philips head screw driver and some general purpose grease. The job takes 30 minutes. You will also need to order parts from a Toyota dealer or equivalent. The parts you need are: 1 shift lever seat and 1 shift lever cap. Bring your VIN number as there were slight variations.That's it! So here it goes. Add Tip Ask Question Comment Download Step 1: Removing the Shift Lever to Get Access to Shifter Seat.
First, you'll need to get at the screws that hold the rubber boot cover to the transmission tunnel. They are underneath the carpet, so you'll need to pull the carpet back a bit to get at them.The rubber boot is held down with a stamped steel retainer with four screws. Be careful not to lose the screws under the carpet or you'll have to either remove ALL the carpet or find new screws. The steel retainer was difficult to remove from under the carpet. I had success pulling it out corner first. Once that comes out, the rubber boot easily pops out. Pull up on the boot to get it out of the way so you can get at the shift lever retainer cap. There is a rubber dust cover over the top that easily pops off. Add Tip Ask Question Comment Download Step 2: Removing the Shifter Lever Retainer Cap. Then next step is to remove the shift lever retainer cap. The cap is spring loaded and the spring presses it into interlocking pins. Use a shop rag and press down and twist the cap counter-clockwise. Once twisted far enough, the cap will clear the pins and pop up as shown below. The entire shift lever assembly will come out in one piece.On the very end is the shift lever cap made of nylon. This too will be replaced. Above that is the shifter ball. Inspect it for burrs and rough edges. If there are any, gently file or sand them down smooth. Otherwise, you'll damage the new seat. Add Tip Ask Question Comment Download Step 3: Inspecting, Removing the Old Seat. Ah-ha! As suspected, the old hard rubber shift lever seat is completely worn out. Not only that, but it was actually crumbly. The reason it causes the problem of having gears pop out is because as the seat wears, this causes the spring to have less pressure in which to push downward on the shift lever, hence it more easily pops out of gear. Remove the old seat. There is a rubber seal underneath it. Remove this as well. The new seat comes with a new seal anyway. Be careful not to get any crumbled bits of seat into the transmission.
Probably not the end of the world if you do since they are generally soft. I used a vacuum to remove the bits. Comparing the old seat to the new shows just how much wear the old seat has. Add Tip Ask Question Comment Download Step 4: Installing the New Seat, Cap, and Seal. Installing is pretty much as simple as it gets. Just install the new seat and seal- seal first into the shifter socket. No special tools required. Next install the new shifter cap by popping off the old, pressing on the new. Apply a thin layer of general purpose grease on all components. Now reverse the disassembly instructions and wallah- all done. As you can see below the old bushing was actually reduced to crumbs. It is amazing the car shifted at all. God bless Toyotas. Still work even when they're broke. It feels like I installed a brand new transmission. I'd add one thing - there was no need to replace the cap. My old one was just fine. Besides that, they are REALLY hard to get on and off. So best to leave the old one on unless it appears to be damaged, in my opinion. 0 BenP146 Tried a universal kit and the bushing (what you're calling a cap) was big enough to cause a headache. One of them i had to sand down just a Bit to get the cao to slide down in place so i can put the spring and all back on to use it.but it still popled out. So i havent really once got a new unsanded cap to slide in place in the hole once it was on the end of my shifter. It just wont slide down around the two notched out pin slots on each side.The thing I am having issues with is the shifter cap, the old one did not just 'pop off' and the new one definitely isn't 'popping in' Any tips. It seems like the new one I got is too small, but it came in the pack with the seal from Rock Auto so not sure what to think. 0 HaroldG20 That point is this: The spring loaded shifter cap serves only one purpose and that purpose is to hold the shifter in the socket. This prevents the shifter from coming out of the socket. Each gear has a synchronizer.Three miles after the purchase, the tranny slipped out of 4th into neutral. Didn't want to go to prison so I waited until I got 45 minutes away from Mr. 'Ain't Nothing Wrong with that Truck' before calling him. Of course he didn't answer and of course he hasn't called me in the five days since. I left a message that let him know emphatically that he knew of the problem and I would appreciate him letting me know the possible cause. Staying cool, I looked up 'my transmission is slipping out of 4th gear' online and fortunately, this article appeared. I took the truck to a mechanic this morning and he called me three hours later saying it would take a special tool 'from the Toyota place' that costs 3 or 4 hundred dollars and that he didn't want to put out that much money for a hundred dollar job. There was another mechanic next door who looked up the labor estimate (I already had the two parts) and he said he'd fix it for 55.00 I waited until 20 minutes before he closed to check the status of the repair. Another guy was working on it who had no idea what he was doing. I was absolutely heartsick.
The owner walked in and I told him what the article said and that pliers (spread apart) would be a better way than trying to pry up the cover with a flat head screwdriver. I took two long screwdrivers and placed them where they wouldn't interfere with the pliers. The bushing was cracked and the rubber seal had disintegrated into crumbs. I wiped out the housing and the entire bottom of the shifter. He applied grease to the ball and then set the bushing (hole side up) on a vice. He turned the shifter upside down and then took a rubber hammer to drive the ball into the bushing. It popped right in. We put the entire assembly back together and it drives like a new vehicle. Whoever wrote this article is a saint and if you're ever in Greensboro N.C., lunch is on me. Thank you. I still own the same truck. I'm glad to hear you were able to fix it. It took me about 45 minutes but now I've done it once I bet I could do the next one in 20; I wasted ten minutes trying to make a tool for the cap before just going the two-screwdriver route and finding how easy that was. I was really sweating this issue, this vehicle is my daily driver and I couldn't afford to replace it or buy a used trans right now.
