Review: Lezyne Femto Drive Lights

Company:

Femto indicates smallness. Extreme smallness. Like, the size of a proton small. While the Lezyne Femto Drive light isn't quite that tiny, it is very unobtrusive. And, it's made to last. CNC-machined from a chunk of solid aluminum with a composite-matrix rear cap that doubles as a mount, the Femto Drive will take abuse and is very user-friendly.

Femto Drive Light

Pushing the Femto's lens will turn it on and off, and cycle through it's four flash modes also. It's rear cap/mount fits on your seatpost, and is secured with a custom-molded silicone strap to fit a wide variety of shapes and diameters.

The Femto comes with two CR2032 batteries.

Cygolite Hotshot Rechargeable LED Light

Company:

Cygolite Hotshot with 5 Settings

Consistently rated one of the best rear lights—and our low price makes it even better—the Cygolite HotShot Tail Light will leave no doubt as to your presence on the road. A searingly-bright 2-Watt LED bulb can be adjusted between five flash modes, and you can fine-tune the flash speed, and even brightness.

Cygolite Hotshot Seatpost Mount

If you commute rain or shine, the HotShot is weatherproof to keep you safe no matter how poor the visibility is. You'll get 4.5 - over 300 hours of shine time depending on the flash mode and output selected. The hot shot is USB rechargeable and comes with a cable to plug into your computer.

Review: Cateye Omni 3 LED Light

Company:

Have every angle of visibility covered with the Cateye Omni 3 LED Tail Light.

Cateye Omni 3 LED Light

The Omni's clear housing allows it's 3 LED bulbs to shine their light backward, sideways, and even forward. While the Omni's full sphere of emittance won't replace the need for a front light, it's nice to know that this tail light is working as hard as it can to increase your safety. With three output modes—solid, flash, and "frantic"—enabling you to dial-in your visibility to the moment, and two different mounts included, the Omni 3 fits into every night riding situation you'll encounter. It's very slim design makes the Omni 3 easy to carry in your pocket or backpack. Powered by two AAA batteries (included), the Omni 3 is inexpensive to own and cheap to run.

Overview of Lezyne Micro Drive Light

Company:

Lezyne's Micro Drive LED steps it up a bit from the Femto Drive. Lezyne's MOR Optics technology shapes the 70 lumens emitted from the single LED bulb into a bright beacon of visibility. Your visibility to other motorists is increased by Side Visibility Cuts—two half-moon cutouts on either side of the lens—which allow the bright red light to be seen from the sides also.

Lezyne Micro Drive LED Light

Design and construction are typical Lezyne, elegant and robust. The Micro Drive body is CNC machined aluminum for resilience and style, plus it helps to dissipate heat build-up from the operation of the light. An integrated USB charging stick is hidden behind the composite matrix end cap, so you can stick the Micro Drive right into your computer or run a cable to recharge it. You'll know when it's time to replenish the Li-ion battery thanks to the fuel indicator, located in the top-mounted power button. A stand-alone, cradle-style mount attaches to your bikes seatpost and is angled slightly up so the light points straight back.

Light & Motion Vis180 Light Overview

Company:

Staggeringly, blindingly bright, the Vis 180 from Light and Motion could be the best and last rear commuter light you will ever buy. Seriously, this thing is bright-it's like looking into the sun. Satellites will see you just as well as motorists will on your commute. Our friends at Light and Motion continue to put a lot of time into the evolution of their commute-specific lights, and it shows.

Vis 180 Light

There are many impressive features on the Vis 180, starting with how devastatingly bright it is. Most lights that claim 180-degree visibility simply add a couple of "windows" on either side of the lens body so that some photons can sneak out the sides. Light and Motion didn't take the easy route with the Vis 180. There is a dedicated bulb and a custom reflector that make the Vis 180's side lights brighter than many other rear lights main light source.

Vis 180 Mounting System

Mounting options are almost unlimited with the Vis 180. About the only place it's not easy to mount the Vis 180 is on your helmet, and the Vis 360 has that covered. An innovative mounting bracket and adjustable integrated clip on the Vis 180's body let you attach it to your seatpost, seatstay, or backpack/messenger bag, and adjust it to the proper angle for maximum visibility.

Overview of Niterider Stinger Light

Company:

NiteRider Stinger Taillight

Niterider's Stinger Taillight gets bright without breaking your wallet. There's a reason this style of light has been so popular since Knog first introduced the Frog a few years ago, and that reason is convenience! The Lightning Bug is small, powerful, and easy to use. Wrap the strap around your bikes seatpost, turn it on and start pedaling. The subtle V-notch cut into the back of the Stinger fits onto the trailing edge of aero seatposts, allowing the Stinger to fit on your TT bike if you are late for work.

Review of BOS Deville Suspension Fork

Company:

Timing is everything, and if you ride mountain bikes in the United States, your time is now. Bos Suspension, ridden to multiple world championships in downhill, cross-country, and even rally car racing, is finally available in the States. Born of competition, the Deville is a true connoisseur's component; infinitely tunable and optimized for performance in every respect.

BOS Deville Fork

Bos' reputation of tuning and testing until perfection is achieved is evident in a glance at the Bos Deville 160mm TRC 650b/27.5" Fork. From the machined tapered steer tube to the stepped lowers, every part of the system is perfect, including the axle, which threads in easily thanks to a hide-away lever and secures with one quick-release clamp. The Deville's 34mm stanchions—which Bos originated—are filled with an open bath cartridge system, allowing a much greater volume of oil to both lubricate seals and bushings and provide damping. Not only does this make for fantastically plush movement, but extends the service life of the oil—Bos calls for two oil changes per year under "extensive usage." Bos' hearalded air spring, one of the smoothest available, sits in the other leg.

Currently, many new forks are being touted as "sitting high in their travel," which is intended to reduce brake dive and wallowing in corners. For other manufacturers, why 2013 has been chosen as the year to finally address these issues is a mystery, since Bos has tuned their forks this way forever. Having a fork that behaves properly when railing corners and under hard braking is akin to bolting up lightweight race wheels in terms of its affect on performance.

The TRC (Twin Rate Curve) system is unique in that it limits the fork travel by increasing the preload in the airspring. This system effectively keeps your compression settings and rebound settings intact so, among other things, you have less bob when pedaling out of the saddle. This is a very different system from other manufacturers and lightyears ahead of the competition.

Deville Fork Suspension System

While preset hydraulic damping adjustments (CTD, RCT3) are suddenly the norm on most high-end "enduro-style" forks, Bos allows you to decide on your own settings. Separately adjustable high-speed and low-speed compression and low-speed rebound settings allow you to precisely tune the Deville to your trails and style of riding, not what a product manager thinks is right for most people on most trails.
