SRAM Red Yaw Front Derailleur Review

Company:

One of the largest complaints about the previous Sram Red drivetrain was the sub-par front derailleur shifting speed. Sram heard our cries though, and not only increased the speed and positiveness of the front shift, they completely eliminated the need for trim adjustment.

SRAM Red Yaw Fron Derailleur

The 2012 Sram Red Yaw Front Derailleur is a revolution in front derailleur design. The Red Yaw Front Derailleur rotates as it shifts, maintaining an angular relationship with the chain. As you shift up onto the big ring, the front of the cage moves more than the rear. This increases the speed of the front shift and makes it feel more precise and direct. The cage is no longer made out of Titanium either. The Red Yaw Front Derailleur uses a Hybrid Alluminum/Steel cage. The back portion of the cage is steel so the up shift is always positive whereas outer portion of the cage is Aluminum. The result of these changes is a front shift that is fast, smooth, and precise.

Front Derailleur Rotates As It Shifts

Lastly, the Red Yaw front derailleur includes an integrated aluminum chain watcher making dropped chains a thing of the past. With smoother and faster shifting, the Yaw front derailleur brings front derailleur design into the 21st century.

Overview of Garmin Vector Pedal System

Company:

Garmin has changed the game with their Vector Pedal system, the first pedal-based power meter that independently measures your left and right balance along with other power metrics, improving performance like never before. The Vector system transmits via ANT+™, so it's compatible with virtually all Garmin computers, and many other high-end head units.

Garmin Vector Powermeter Pedals

Unlike crank and wheel based systems, Vector is easy to buy, install and update, without taking it back to the shop. Set up and swapping between bikes is as easy as a pedal install. In addition to the pedals themselves, the system uses two battery powered pods which measure cadence and total power, as well as independent left and right leg power. Vector then wirelessly transmits the data for display on compatible Edge® cycling computers, Forerunner® multisport watches or other ANT+™ enabled head units. Complete the suite with post-ride analysis, route planning, free training plans and data sharing at Garmin Connect™.

Battery Powered Pods Measure Cadence and Power

The pedals themselves are Look Kéo-compatible, featuring lightweight composite bodides and a tough stainless steel wear-plates. CNC-machined, hardened stainless steel spindles further durability, while LSL bushings and sealed cartridge bearings ensure silky smooth rotation. Adjustable tension allows riders to fine tune release.

Fizik Arione CX Saddle Review

Company:

Choosing a saddle can be the most important element of making your ride as comfortable as possible. There are a huge range of saddles out there from many manufacturers, so the choice can be confusing.

Fizik Arione CX

The Fizik Arione is a great mid-range offering from a world class manufacturer. You may have seen the Fizik name along many of the top cycling teams.

2 Rail Saddle Available in 3 Colors

The CX version of the saddle offers a little bit more weight saving than the standard version. In fact, by about 20 grams. 3 color options are available, and all of them look fantastic.

Overview of Ergon SM3 Pro Saddle

Company:

Ergon specializes in making contact points on the bike as comfortable as physically possible. That being said, the Ergon SM3 Pro Saddle is unique in the saddle world. Ergon spent a lot of time researching how the sit-bones make contact with the saddle and the result is a saddle that looks a bit different than other saddles.

Ergon SM3 Pro Saddle

The first thing that sets the Ergon SM3 apart is its shape. A slight channel in the middle keeps pressure off the sensitive bits while depressions for the sit-bones provides them with more contact on the saddle, relieving pressure points while still providing plenty of support.

Channel in Middle of Seat Directs Pressure

The padding underneath is made from two different densities, with the firmer section being placed directly underneath the sit-bones. The base is ultra-thin which imparts the SM3 Pro with some engineered flex while the added carbon reinforcement of the Pro version gives the saddle long-term durability as the carbon keeps the saddle from developing any untimely sag. The rails connect behind the sit bones and a damper underneath the front rail connection helps take some of the sting away from impacts and smooth out the ride. It's about time you introduce your posterior to the softer side of top-notch performance, because thanks to Ergon's SM3 Pro, it finally exists.

Enve Compact Road Handlebar Review

Company:

Enve Compact Road Bar

The Enve Compact Road Bar fills the demand for the increasingly common compact road bar. Compact bars have a short and shallow reach and drop. Enve's compact bar also has a broad, slightly raised top section that is flattened to make the tops more comfortable.

Integrated Bar Ends

The bars have a sharp bend to make a perfectly flat and even transition to today's hood shapes and still be comfortable in the drops with easy reach to the lever blades. Recessed cable routes keep everything looking clean and the integrated bar plugs are the finishing touch on a perfect compact carbon road bar.

Properly Fit A Star Nut

The star nut is pressed into the steerer tube and allows the fork and headset components to be pulled into place in the frame’s head tube. If you have a new fork, or have just cut down the steerer tube, you may need to fit a new star nut.

You will need: a star nut fitting tube and a hammer.

Ideally, you should carry out this procedure with the fork off the bike. If you have an existing nut that needs to be replaced for any reason, the easiest way is to use a hammer and long bolt to push it out the bottom of the steerer.

It may be possible to fit a star nut using an appropriately sized bolt, hammer, and a top cap to help guide it in straight. However, dedicated tools make the job much easier. We also suggest using a brand new nut.

Put Star Nut on Fitting Tool

Wind the star nut as far as you can on to the fitting tool with the flare on the star nut pointing towards the handle of the tool. Brace the fork legs against the floor. Place the star nut into the steerer tube and use the hammer to tap the nut into the tube. Use a fair amount of force, but make sure to keep things straight.

Put Star Nut with Tool into Steerer Tube

Once the nut reaches the maximum length the tool allows, make sure the nut is straight. Unscrew the tool and your fork is ready to be reinstalled.

Smith Optics Overtake Helmet Review

Company:

Light, Aero, Safe, and Unique.

Smith Overtake Helmet

Smith continues their foray into the cycling world with the Overtake road helmet. It features the same Aerocore™ technology as their innovate Forefront all-mountain helmet, using thermally-welded Koroyd® co-polymer tubes to create a lightweight, highly-breathable, protective matrix. Because of the strength of this inner piece, the outer EPS shell can have more strategically placed vents to allow all those tubes to move air off your head as effectively as possible. Not only this, but the Aerocore™ construction has also permitted the helmet to be aerodynamically shaped, having tested in the tunnel to have less Wind Averaged Drag than some of the popular “aero” road helmets on the market.

Adjustable Fit System

Externally, Smith has designed built-in sunglass storage into its cosmetics so that you can easily keep them on the front or back of the helmet when you’re not wearing them. The brow of the helmet has been made to have a taller field-of-view than its competitors so you don’t have to crane your neck when you’re riding in the drops, and the helmet rests on a new X-Static reactive-cooling liner attached to Smith’s VaporFit™ adjustable fit system to ensure a personalized and secure fit.

Claimed weight: 250 g.

Available in multiple colorways.

Installing Pedals the Right Way

Installing Pedals:

First, be aware that there are two types of pedals -left and right- they are not the same. The left pedal is a left hand thread, and the right a right hand thread.

Be Sure to Grease Threads of Pedal

Second, grease the threads of the pedals before you screw them in. This will allow them to screw in more tightly and more easy, as well as remove easier.

Three, use a pedal wrench. They need to be on tightly to hold up under pressure.

Use Pedal Wrench to Ensure Tightness

To install the left pedal, it screws in counter clockwise. One thing to be aware of is that not all pedals have pedal flats, which are used to engage the pedal wrench. If they do not have flats, look to see if there is an allen bolt to tighten the pedals with.

Kali Phenom Road Helmet Review

Company:

The Kali Phenom Helmet features industry-leading safety features along with a lightweight, well-ventilated design. Kali's Composite Fusion Plus technology utilizes varying densities of EPS foam molded into specific shapes which very effectively spread an impact away from your head over a larger area of the helmet.

Kali Phenom Helmet

Additional Bumper Fit System foam pads provide extra impact absorption and a custom-fit feel. Supervent technology allows the use of massive vents, increasing ventilation and impact absorption efficiency. Since frontal impacts are the most common in cycling, Supervent technology adds a reinforcing structure to each frontal vent, which again spreads impact energy over a larger area.

Bumper Fit System

The pony tail accommodating dial-actuated Micro Fit retention system allows one-handed adjustments while an included optional helmet liner keeps bugs off your dome.

Included with the Kali Phenom is a custom fit Aero Shell for improved aerodynamics when needed.
