Crankset Review: SRAM Red Carbon Exogram

Company:

Counter to logic, Sram did the seemingly impossible. They made a lighter crankset by increasing its size and made it not only lighter, but also stiffer by removing material.

SRAM Red Exogram Crankset

The Sram Red Exogram crankset features an entirely hollow carbon arm structure. There are no alloy beams or reinforcements like on the old Red cranks. They also use the crankarm as a spider-arm, eliminating the need for a 5-arm spider. This allows the cranks to be much lighter. Bolting the chainring to the crankarm in this way also stiffens the chainrings under load, decreasing flex under hard shifting. Further increasing stiffness is the new X-Glide R chainrings. X-Glide Road chainrings are thicker than previous models so they are stiffer, and have revamped shift timing pins and ramps so they work seamlessly with the Yaw Front Derailleur.

Hollow Carbon Crank Arm

Sram claims the Red Exogram crankset is the stiffest crank they've ever made. It's super light weight and smooth shifting is icing on the cake.

SRAM Red XG-1090 Cassette

Company:

XG-1090 Cassette

We all knew it was coming, but the XG-1090 cassette is better than we could have imagined. Super light, super durable, and extremely quiet, the Sram Red XG-1090 Powerdome X cassette is the most advanced cassette ever made. The eight middle cogs are machined from a single piece of heat-treated, high grade tool steel. Tool steel is known to be extremely durable since it's primarily used for making premium tools (hence the name). This equates to a cassette that will last much longer than any other cassette on the market.

Aluminum and Steel

It doesn't stop there however. The largest ring is made from Aluminum which brings the weight down even more. Machining holes through the body made the Powerdome X much quieter than its predecessor, but Sram wasn't content. Sram installed StealthRing elastomers between the cogs and refined the tooth profiles to eliminate vibration and noise associated with the chain engaging the cassette. Power transfer is unaffected however and the result is an incredibly quiet ride experience, especially when used in conjunction with the 2012 Red Rear Derailleur. Because 2012 Red is 10 speed compatible, the XG-1090 Powerdome X cassette can be used with any Sram 10 speed road or mountain group.

Time ATAC XS Carbon Pedals

The Time ATAC XS Carbon pedals have a composite carbon body to keep the weight down, but still rock a chromoly axle for durability.

Time ATAC XS Carbon Pedals

The Time ATAC (Auto Tension Adjustment Concept) system simply separates float from spring tension. This means that you get the same amount of float no matter how much force you choose to have to use to release. The float in most pedal systems is influenced by spring tension (release force), so if you like being securely clipped in, you give up some measure of comfort as your float decreases as well. Either that or you have to dial your cleat angle in precisely. Conversely, if you like running very little spring tension, you'll have more "slop" between the cleat and the pedal. Not so with the Time ATAC XS Carbon's. Run light tension without feeling like your walking on ice, or crank the tension up to the limit while remaining comfortable. Time ATAC pedals are an easy set-up because no cleat angle adjustment is required, remember - the float always stays the same!

Can Adjust With Different Tools

The Time ATAC XS Carbon's are light enough to race with, and offer enough support to ride on all day long.

LED Light Review: NiteRider Pro 3600

NiteRider Pro 3600

This light should to be called the Jailbreak, because the Niterider Pro 3600 LED could do double duty as a prison searchlight. 3600 lumens? That leaves most car headlights in the dust. So, you could use the Pro 3600 to light a basketball game, full-court, at night... What else could you need in a light? How about the ability to program output/burn times to your specific needs? Niteriders D.I.Y. software lets you easily adjust the Pro 3600 to your requirements. Let's say you are doing night shuttle runs. You only need one setting—full blast—so program the light to go to eleven with one press of the button without toggling between several modes. What if you are on a 24-hour team and want to maximize your burn times? Program a medium and a low setting for descending and for climbing, and don't waste time by toggling or lose precious burn time by running an unnecessary output. Niterider's D.I.Y. software works on Windows 2000 and later operating systems only. The 3600 comes set to run a low, medium, high configuration with no programming necessary.

Mounts

The Niterider Pro 3600 blasts away with six high-end CREE LED bulbs in custom-tuned reflectors, and has one button for simplicity and plenty of indicator lights to tell you what's going on. Niteriders fantastic handlebar mount is included, along with a helmet mount. For racing use, Niteriders battery tray allows fast battery swaps—just squeeze the tabs on each side of the battery and slide off the tray which is attached to your bike, and snap in a fresh battery—no unwrapping sticky velcro cables.

Sram Red Aero Link Brakeset

Company:

Single Pivot brakes have gotten a bad wrap from the big three. While small companies like Ciamillo have long preached the benefits of the smaller brake style, most people weren't convinced. That is now changed.

Aero Link Brake

Sram has embraced the single pivot idealogy, and it's little wonder why. The 2012 Sram Red Aerolink brakes champion many of the features commonly found on high-power single pivot designs. They have more modulation, more power, lighter weight, and feature a smaller profile that hides from the wind better. The secret is Sram's Aerolink arm (similar to Ciamillo's cam advantage). This arm multiplies brake force as it moves, creating a brake that has loads of power when it's needed, and great modulation when it's not. The lack of a second pivot results in a smaller body and consequently lighter weight, so it really is the best of all worlds.

Brake Pivot

The recent trend toward wider rims is also accounted for in the Red AeroLink brakes. With a maximum width of 31mm from pad to pad, the Red Aerolink brakes can easily accomodate 28c tires and the widest wheel designs from Zipp and Hed. Lastly, the new Sram Red Aerolink brakes are backwards compatible, which means that whether you're riding 2012 Sram Red, 2010 Sram Red, Force, or even Apex, you can enjoy the Aerolink benefits.

Schwalbe Racing Ralph Evo Tire

Company:

A great cross-country tire must be fast, supple, grippy, and lightweight. It must roll exceptionally well but brake effectively when required. The Schwalbe Racing Ralph EVO tire possesses all these qualities making it a favorite tire of trail and XC riders alike for it's fast rolling tread and great cornering.

Racing Ralph Evo Tire

For 2012, Schwalbe redesigned the tread to provide even more control on hardpack and loose-over hard terrain. The shoulder knobs are less angled, transition knobs have been added, and the rubber compound has been upgraded to Schwalbe's PaceStar compound. The Racing Ralph Tubeless Ready tire uses Schwalbe's 127tpi EVO casing which makes it extremely supple. Schwalbe also added sizes to fit the needs of the growing 29er market. If you typically ride in fast, dry conditions the Racing Ralph is a great choice for your XC needs.

Schwalbe Tire Tread

Choose the Snakeskin models if you typically ride rocky terrain. All models are tubeless compatible.

Routing Internal Cable Housing for Aero Road Bars

Bike Category:

How to route cable housing for aero road bars:

Bend Cable With Needle Nose Pliers

Start by cutting housing long and using a pair of needle nose pliers to bend the tip of the housing. This helps get housing through the internal bend smoothly and directed to the exit port near the handlebar clamp. It is almost always better to start at the drop and end at the bar clamp to get the job done smoothly.

Cut Cable Housing After Running Through Handlebars

If the housing doesn’t pop out of the cable housing port all by itself, a flashlight and a pick tool are usually all you will need to guide it out of the hole. Once you get the housing through the bar, cut the housing to length being sure to cut off the bent section of the housing.

Cateye Loop Lights

Company:

Cateye Loop Light

Cateye's Loop lights are the next evolutionary step after the LD100. The Loop Light is shaped to fit on your handlebars or seatpost, and is quickly attached by hooking the stretch cord around the bar and back onto itself. A simple push on the front of the light turns it on or switches between flash and constant modes.

Cateye Loop Mount

NOTE:

The Loop is sold in "Try Me" Mode to allow someone to turn on the light but have it automatically turn off after 30 seconds. From the OFF position, push and HOLD ON for 10 seconds until the LED flashes rapidly. "Try Me" Mode is now deactivated.
