Helmet Sizing: How to Fit and Adjust your Bike Helemet

Bike Category:

Some of you cyclists may already know this but, like clothes, every person on this planet has a different sized head. Just because you go a size XL in a shirt does not mean you have a XL head. So how do you figure out what is your size?

Here are two good rules of thumb, no pun intended.

  • You should be able to only fit one finger between the front of the helmet and your forehead.
  • After tightening the chin strap, there should only be room for three fingers between your chin and the strap.

Last, NEVER wear a helmet that was involved in a crash or any kind of impact!

Most helmet companies use the same measurement equivalents for small, medium and large.

Remember: it is important that you have a correct fitting helmet and that you wear one whenever you are on a bike. It doesn’t matter how far or near you are going. If the helmet can be pushed easily to one side, it’s too loose. If the helmet sits right on your hair line, it’s too small. You are not Boy George so don’t wear your helmet on the back of your head like a halo.

I’ve included this Jay Leno Garage video because though it is on motorcycle helmets, the same principles apply to bike helmets.
