Valachovic Numerical analyses of two existing gas turbine combustors gave predictions of idle power emissions. The calculated exit emissions of unburned hydrocarbons (UHC) and carbon monoxide (CO) are compared to engine test data. For the first combustor, the effects of varying fuel flow on the UHC and CO emissions were investigated while liner cooling flow changes were examined in the second combustor. A fully elliptic three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics code based on pressure correction techniques was employed to model the flow field inside the combustor. Fuel injection was handled using a Lagrangian liquid droplet spray model coupled to the gas phase equations. The combustion model consists of a two-step global reaction mechanism with reaction rates computed using a modified eddy-breakup technique. The numerical algorithm employs non-orthogonal curvilinear coordinates and the standard k-e turbulence model. The results for the first combustor agree well with the test measurements. The baseline result for the second combustor shows good agreement with test data. Predicted effects of cooling flow changes agree with trends from past experience of idle power emissions.http://www.drupalitalia.org/node/66492

The analysis advances the state-of-the-art for the representation of the liquid-phase and for the coupling between the phases. The gas phase representation is existing state-of-the-art. Both droplet vaporization and turbulent mixing rates are found to be rate-controlling in the primary reaction region, and the mixing rate is identified to be the rate-controlling process in the later stages of combustion. Enhanced energy conversion is observed to result from improved mixing; the effects of fuel composition are found to be negligible. Near the wake-extinction limit of the combustor the effects of fuel composition are found to be very significant. Westbrook Frederick. L. Dryer Simplified reaction mechanisms for the oxidation of hydrocarbon fuels have been examined using a numerical laminar flame model. The types of mechanisms studied include one and two global reaction steps as well as quasi-global mechanisms.CLIMAFAN.COM/images/3l80-transmission-manual.pdf

Reaction rate parameters were varied in order to provide the best agreement between computed and experimentally observed flame speeds in selected mixtures of fuel and air. The influences of the various reaction rate parameters on the laminar flame properties have been identified, and a simple procedure to determine the best values for the reaction rate parameters is demonstrated. Fuels studied include n-paraffins from methane to n-decane, some methyl-substituted n-paraffins, acetylene, and representative olefin, alcohol and aromatic hydrocarbons. Results show that the often-employed choice of simultaneous first order fuel and oxidizer dependence for global rate expressions cannot yield the correct dependence of flame speed on equivalence ratio or pressure and cannot correctly predict the rich flammability limit. However, the best choice of rate parameters suitably reproduces rich and lean flammability limits as well as the dependence of the flame speed on pressure and equivalence ratio for all of the fuels examined. Two-step and quasi-global approaches also yield information on flame temperature and burned gas composition. However, none of the simplified mechanisms studied accurately describes the chemical structure of the flame itself. The topics discussed are the chemistry of combustion, physics of combustion, kinetically controlled combustion phenomena, diffusion flames in liquid fuel combustion, combustion of solids, combustion of gaseous jet fuels, and flames in premixed gases. The thermodynamics, thermochemistry, and equilibria of reactive mixtures are presented in appendices. (JSR) View Show abstract Combustor Design Criteria Validation. Volume I.

Element Tests and Model Validation Article Mar 1979 T. W. Bruce H. C. Mongia R. S. Reynolds This report describes the 37-month program for the development of analytical models applicable to small gas turbine combustors. Six analytical models were developed and validated with element tests. The inputs and correlations obtained from the element tests along with basic developments to the models and the numerics provided analytical models when used in judicious conjunction with traditional empirical design and development of two different advanced reverse flow annular combustor concepts. One concept met all program performance goals without any major design modifications and the second concept required only one modification to meet the objectives. Therefore, the analytical models, when used in the proper context in conjunction with empirical methodology will reduce the design and development time and cost associated with gas turbine combustion systems. In addition, the models add to the fundamental under-standing of the physical processes occurring within the combustor which affect its performance. Extensive performance mapping of the two developed combustor concepts was conducted. This data was used to validate and update the computer models. This is Volume I of the three-volume final report covering the combustor element tests and model validation that took place in Task 1 of the program. Volume II reports the results of program Tasks II and III on the design, fabrication, and rig test of the two different combustors. Volume III is the User's Manual for the models. View full-text Article Computation of Reacting Flows in Combustion Processes January 1998 Kuo-Huey Chen Keith Gyounnet Theo The main objective of this research was to develop an efficient three-dimensional computer code for chemically reacting flows. The main computer code developed is ALLSPD-3D. The ALLSPD-3D computer program is developed for the calculation of three-dimensional, chemically reacting flows with sprays.

A stochastic droplet model and an efficient method for treatment of the spray source terms in the gas-phase equations are used to calculate the evaporating liquid sprays. The chemistry treatment in the code is general enough that an arbitrary number of reaction and species can be defined by the users. Also, it is written in generalized curvilinear coordinates with both multi-block and flexible internal blockage capabilities to handle complex geometries. In addition, for general industrial combustion applications, the code provides both dilution and transpiration cooling capabilities. To apply numerical methods to such models it is often necessary to generate a mesh of space-filling elements that conforms to the model surfaces. While there are meshing algorithms that can do so, they place restrictive requirements on the surface-based models that are rarely met by existing 3D model building software. Hence, we have developed a Java application named FacetModeller, designed for efficient manual creation, modification and analysis of 3D surface-based models destined for use in numerical modelling. At the bottom of the window is the information line. The rest of the user interface is accessed via context-sensitive menus called up via clicking the right mouse button over the workspace. At the far right of the Title Bar are the standard GUI widgets for Minimize, Restore, and Close. If a previously saved file is open in Wings 3D, the title bar will display its file name. When a file is auto-saved, the title bar displays that the file has been auto-saved.This is where your work is displayed and worked on.This is where you will find general options in Wings that are not specific to any one Selection Mode. The menus are as follows:To reveal a hidden toolbar, right-click the title bar and select Show Toolbar. In this mode, lines are not subject to foreshortening like they are in perspective view.

Therefore, in a scene with two identical objects the object furthest away from the camera still appears to have the same dimensions as the object closest to the camera. This is often the ideal viewing mode for most modeling operations because this is how objects appear to us in the real world. Keeping an eye on the status bar is important as it gives you valuable information about the status of an operation while manipulating elements of geometry. Many of the commands are axis-specific in operation, working around these global axes or around local axes parallel to them. Display colors for each axis are by defauld set to X: red, Y: green, Z: blue, but you can assign axis colors according to your preference. This grid is useful for measuring the objects you create. It uses Wings world units, which are an arbitrary size that you can use to represent any scale you want, i.e. inches, feet, etc. This is probably the most important thing to keep your eye on, especially if you are new to Wings. The information line's main purpose is to display every possible button option available for the currently highlighted or active operation, tool, or menu item. Many of the tools and menu options have more than one function, and some of the more advanced options are only displayed in the information line. To display any menu item's possible options or described function, simply hover over the item with the mouse cursor. When several options are available for a tool, menu item, or during an operation, those options are displayed in the information line preceded by L, M, or R. Sometimes the user will be prompted to depress a modifier key in conjunction with the designated mouse button. The typical modifier keys are control,, or, or sometimes a combination of two or more are used with the mouse buttons. There are other instances when numeric or other keys are used to toggle options. In cases where numeric keys are used to change the result of a command, do not use the numeric keypad.

For numeric key modifiers displayed in the information line, use the numeric keys across the top of your keyboard instead. Some dialog boxes pop up when the user chooses to enter a value numerically and other pop up automatically asking the user to enter a value before proceeding.Perhaps that's not its official name, but it serves as a pretty apt description. Pressing during most types of operations that involve scaling, moving, rotating, or extruding elements of geometry invokes this dialog box. The information line will tell you when this option is available. When the user presses during such an operation, the tab entry dialog box will open with the present value of the operation already entered, ready for the user to edit.It is perfectly feasible to type In the dialog box, type math: before the expression -- for example, math:pi would call up the value of pi. Here are the allowed expressions:The tab entry dialog box retains previous entries and can pull those values back up at your bidding. Pressing the up and down arrow keys will scroll through the history of past inputs. Access to previous entries in a dialog box can be a useful, especially when you have to perform the same procedure more than once in a session. The history function allows you to quickly repeat a procedure at a constant value. Keep in mind that dialog box input history is not exclusive to each tool. It keeps a running history of the inputs for all tools. This means that the last entry you typed will appear when you press the up arrow once, not necessarily the input you typed for the last time you used that particular tool. To assign a hotkey to a command, open the menu containing the command. Highlight the command and press the or the key, followed by the key you wish to assign it to. The hotkey should now appear beside the command. To delete a hotkey, highlight the command and press the or key.

For instance, using the B key, you can assign the following eight commands:Just as with context-sensitive menus, Wings only allows you access to hotkeys of tools and commands available from within the current selection mode. This means that you can re-use the same hotkey for tools or commands in different Modes. For instance S can be assigned to both Smooth in the Face menu and Slide in the Edge menu. If there is a conflict, Wings will tell you right away. This is because the commands found in Menu Bar menus will (for the most part) work across all modes, essentially making them global hotkeys. To do this, you must enter some code into the Erlang Console; instructions can be found on Scorpius's web page. The primary tools in Wings -- such as Move, Rotate, and Scale -- have five basic directions along which you can perform an operation. These are:Because of this it makes sense to use the same hotkey for Move -- say, 'M' -- in all four selection modes and use modifier keys to achieve the five basic directions. Because the basic directions X, Y, Z, Normal, and Free exist across all modes for a variety of tools, it makes sense to assign a modifier key to each direction. You could then consider using for the Z axis, and for the Y axis so that no matter what tool you use, the modifier for the operation's direction is always the same. Remember that there are eight possible combinations of any key plus its modifiers. This should be plenty to get the majority of the tools hotkeyed in a way you are going to remember them.Policies and guidelines Contact us By using this site, you agree to the Terms of Use and Privacy Policy.
