The occupational exposure generally ranges from one ppm to sev eral tens of ppm. For this study, we tested the operation of different commonly used diffusi ve samplers by exposing them for quite long periods (1 to 14 days) in mildly polluted atmospheres with benzene then BTX (10 to 200 ppb). The measurements taken with each type of sampler allow variations in uptake rates and pollutant back diffusion or competition phenomena at the adsorption sites to be observed. The diffusi ve samplers validated in this context will be lik ely to respond to the needs of prev ention specialists wishing to characterize low occupational exposure levels occurring ov er long periods. A number of organic vapor diffusi ve samplers are a vailable commercially. Currently, two broad categories are distin- guished: diffusi ve solvent-desorption badges and diffusi ve thermal-desorption tubes. ? Diffusi ve solvent-desorption badges, or badge-type sam- plers, have a large circular opening, a short and axial diffusion path, and a protectiv e membrane.
