Daniel J Harriger 3.0 out of 5 stars I've had an Earthquake 2-Cycle cultivator for 2 years. However, recently it began acting up and I ordered a replacement carburetor, which was back ordered. So I purchased the Mantis 4-Cycle. Determining factor was the Mantis uses a Honda engine. I have 5 other pieces of equipment with Honda engines ranging from 2 hp to 6.5 hp and have found them highly reliable, easy to start and problem free. The Earthquake has a Viper engine, which has started fine but would now not run full throttle. This is a problem if you are working close to plants as I am in my garden. The Mantis also uses twice as much gas as the Earthquake. The slicing tines on the Mantis work OK, but really only work when pulled backwards (as the manual states). You must work side to side to get all the weeds as the gap between tines misses a lot. The Earthquake tines are standard rototiller-type tines and work going both forward and backward with the only gap between the 2 inner tines.
Only drawback I have found on the Earthquake is the spark plug wire, which has a coiled wire inside that wraps around the top of the spark plug, will pull out of the magneto assembly when removed to install a new spark plug (learned from experience and had to replace the magneto assembly for this problem). The Mantis has now become an expensive backup if the Earthquake has future problems. We just got our new tiller yesterday and spent some time putting it together and went out to happily use it today. It won't start. The old one was never a problem to start. So, we confidently called Mantis - only to get a person on the other end who couldn't care less and offered no help. Told us that since we did not purchase it from Mantis, there is no warranty and no help. Said we could take it to a service center to get it started and pay them. We were totally taken aback by the lack of product support, but the attitude was that if we didn't choose to buy it directly from them, we were now on our own and seemingly an enemy. Amazon is, of course, good for the return, but it'll be another 2 hours of taking it apart, draining the fluids, etc. We are sending it back and will purchase a similar item from a different manufacturer. Disgusted and angry.I had the 2-cycle version and it also worked very well, but it was sometimes difficult to start. This spring the old, 2 -cycle, tiller would not start at all. I was searching for repair parts when I found the new 4-Cycle version. I was concerned that the 4-Cycle would not be as good, but finally decided to order it anyway. I'm very glad that I did. It took me about 20 minutes to put it together, add the included engine oil and put gasoline into the tank. It took 2 or 3 pulls and the small Honda engine was running. In my opinion, this 4-Cycle engine runs every bit as well as the old 2-Cycle does. It chews through almost anything you put it into.
However, shallow tree roots will jam you up and you may need to shut down and unwind them from the tines. Some larger stones will sometimes get jammed in the tines, but they're not difficult to remove. I'm very, very pleased that I purchased the Mantis 7940 Tiller and the fact that I no longer need to mix gas and oil makes my life a little bit easier.A week ago I turned the raised beds over with a shovel. Last night I assembled the Mantis (maybe 30 minutes) and attacked the beds. They were full of tight clumps of grass and weeds. I was VERY IMPRESSED with this cute little tiller. It's easy to use, quiet and does the job. Some of the clumps it would chew right through, some it would spit out the back. The most ornery ones I shook the dirt out of and threw into the compost bin. The huge majority were chewed up and spit out. It's a keeper. For raised beds it's perfect. Small enough to easily fit but powerful enough to dig in break up the clumps. It does collect longer grasses which get wrapped around the tines shaft. I stopped periodically to unclog the tines. I view this not as a fault of the tiller but as penance for neglecting the garden for so long. The Honda motor is easy to start, quiet and plenty powerful enough to do the job. It only bogged down once when there were so many weeds and grass wrapped in the tines it couldn't turn. It's very light. My wife would have no trouble carrying it from place to place nor handling it in the garden. I think she will be comfortable using it however.I hadn't had much use for it since moving, so sat in the garage for 13 years unused until last year when I tried to start it again - obviously after all that time it needed some repairs and did remind me of it's particular starting method (choke, pull until it fires, choke off, 2 pulls and starts). However, after 13 years of disuse, it just wasn't working the same, so needed to replace it.
Doing some more research, this is still the best option on the market for a small tiller that will till deeply. When I saw Mantis offered a 4-cycle engine (no more 50:1 oil mixing) using a Honda engine (regarded as one of the best small equipment engine manufacturers you can get), I decided to get the upgraded version of this tiller. Package showed up via UPS within a week of ordering it - faster than the expected delivery time they originally advertised. Didn't take too long to assemble it (attach handles and kickstand, really). Used it yesterday for the first time and works like my original did 18 years ago, if not even better with the 4-cycle engine. Very pleased with it. If tilling in heavy weeds, you will have to stop from time to time to clear the weeds that get wrapped around the shaft, but is relatively easy just by taking off the tines and cleaning it out. One concerning item is that it was tagged with a warning on the engine to avoid gas with ethanol, which is not an easy task since most places in Canada have now mandated 10 ethanol in gas.and many companies also use it as an octane booster. Issue with ethanol is that on some engine components (some plastics), it dissolves and picks up traces of the plastic molecule and when burnt, will gum up the carb and other systems over time. One upgrade might be a metal fuel tank as is likely the greatest exposure and don't see people draining the tank between uses. Overall though, very pleased with it.Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Please try again Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Will worry about the storage problems later. Do they have the tines set for till or for cultivating, cultivating I would think.
Turn it on its side and dump it in something or is there more to it? Will buy some fresh gas and dump the old I bought about last Oct in my car as soon as the tank goes down enough. Premium? I usually buy regular. I already have 3 different kinds sitting here, had a bunch of Lawnboy in cans, can't find any now: I have been hand digging everything with a shovel, fork, tile spade, kid's spade, but my back is weak, tires easily, and sometimes it goes out (if the latter, it would be too painful for awhile to even think of using the tiller). If it won't break sod, I will be disappointed; I'm not talking about a huge garden plot. How do I get the pins out and back in to change the tines or put on the edger that came with it. They were going to show me but didn't. They would probably recommend something to buy from them, but would answer some of these questions, I'm sure. If I should call them, I will. The SAE 30 will be OK. It probably would eventually. Else, you probably won't have a very straight edge. I just got my Mantis for my birthday in April and love it. It's the 2 cycle. Yes, the book says to pull it backward and then let it dig forward. The reason the tines have to be switched for till or cultivate is the tines points point a little off center. When in the till position, the points are pointing forward in the direction of travel. Just the opposite for cultivate. This is so the tines won't dig in so deep when cultivating. Don't know about the oil change procedure since mine is 2 cycle. Owners manual should enlighten you on this and what kind of oil to use.I'm guessing a good 30 wt.Just regular gas should be fine. Some folks swear by Stabil to keep gas fresh and not form varnish. I,like you, empty the gas tank and run the carb dry. The tine pins are really easy. This will prevent rust forming and causing tines to stick to shaft. Hope I have helped you. Mike The oil should be level with the top of the opening. Check it every time you go to use the machine.
After 10 hours or so, dump the oil out and replace it with SAE30 motor oil. It is a great tool. Don't be afraid to experiment a little to find what works best for you. It will break sod, but you have to clean the grass out of the tines periodically. Heavy duty scissors work well for that. Mow it short first so you don't have as much grass wrapping up in the tines. It will work you a bit, but not as bad as a shovel and hoe. Just hold it in one spot so it can dig through the roots. It was a great help. You answered all my questions, it will break some sod, I can hand dig the rest for no bigger than I'm going. Wouldn't start, confusion about the choke, when done read the manual again, says to start with choke closed on a cold start, open on a warm start. Forgot to turn the switch to on duh. Whatever. I did have to break up some sod on the edges. But no matter where I was in there, it likes to bounce, does a number on your arms, hope I get used to that, I did put on hiking boots and took my watch off. One hand is still shaking an hour later. Think I understand how to do the oil now. I didn't want to hose it or soak the tines in a bucket, so took them off, pulled off all the stuck grass and dirt, washed down with a scrubbie and old cloth; it's in the back hall air drying. I don't think that detangle tool would do much for me, easier to just take the tines off, time will tell. I don't think I would try to break up very much sod ever again, and I don't think it would be safe to use on the terrace the way it bounces. But I can see what it will do from the sidewalk and find a way to get the rest done. Thank you for giving me the courage and info. A lot of that is in one of the manuals. Bounch is simply hard blades bounching on hard ground. If you keep the garden area up, future tilling will become almost fun. The initial prep work is indeed work but gets easier in maintenance mode. The Mantis tines rotate forward so to dig them in you pull backwards.
If you let it go forward, the forward rotation causes the tiller to bounce. Pull it toward you when tilling and it will not bounce on you. Again, you pull it backwards; don't push it forwards. I'm not talking about 10'X20'. One poster told me to edge first which I will do. I was thinking on one side I could stand on my steps and pull it across, but can't do that on the other side. I'd say it might be easier to hand dig that, but I don't think I can stand on a 45-degree terrace and dig without buying golf or cleated shoes. I may have to get somebody stronger to do the terrace for me. To just dig out a hole, I can probably do that. It is too hot again for me to use it now, mid-80's is about all I can take. I really appreciate it, am a little chagrined you can't walk forward with it. If I can't walk forward with it when I cultivate, I will have to be very careful of my footing on the top of the terrace, plus to get around my 21 tomato cages, I am going to be having to do a lot of lifting and re-positioning. My wife and I bought a house 3 seasons ago and the first plot I tore up with my BCS without mowing first. It was a bugger with the tiller wanting to lurch forward all the time. On the next three plots, I mowed them first and had considerably less lurching. It's just the hard sod that causes that. Rocks will make them jump, too. My FIL doesn't do very well at keeping his garden weed free and I find myself walking backward every now and again when cultivating to knock down, uproot and chop up the foot and a half tall foxtail. Otherwise, I hardly ever walk my mantis backward unless I'm doing some very aggressive tilling. They're a great little tiller I guess I would have found out soon enough just by trying different things. We can't connect to the server for this app or website at this time. I have the Electric start tool, so I don't have to pull the rope. I have cleaned the filter, put it back in and it won't even start. Take the filter out and it will run. The first time I used it worked fine. Now it won't run and I have only had it 3 weeks. Hopefully I can get this problem fixed. The problem I am having with it is the recoil either keeps getting clogged or breaks. If they would find a way to close some of the vents up it might do better, if they get rid of the plastic they use that is. Go to either a heavier plastic or metal on the recoil is my thoughts. Starting this is okay but turn it off you will have trouble restarting it. Over all I am HIGHLY dissapointed with this tiller, I wish i could get my money back. Tends to bounce a bit in garden, though. A little more weight would help.I originally got the two cycle, but after one use, it would not start. I took it back and spent more money for the four cycle. This one starts and seems to do what I want.
It is still my primary goto machine, but parts are wearing out and my dealer tells me that they cannot get what I need. Not sure I like that. Had to duct tape it to keep it on. Mfg. defect or poor design? Saves me an enormous amount of time since I can cultivate my large garden in less than an hour. My old hand-cultivating days took several hours and a lot of strain on my back. My only suggestion is to use wider wheels or a longer axle to make the transporting of machine more stable. It is a bit finicky when starting and you need to let it warm up a bit. It does provide a very smooth texture to the dirt upon use however. We're here to help. Just Ask Troy.
