I get most of my knowledge from the online help, info on the web and stumbling upon things by accident (perhaps the most effective method). I felt the need to get this book mainly because, while reading those things on the web, I was thinking: 'hey, that's the kind of thing that would have been good to know two years ago' Simple stuff, like how layer blending modes really work. This book delivers what it title promises. It really is the missing manual. I started reading on page 1 (even though you don't have to) and learned something on almost every page. It also works well as a reference manual. The level of detail about (comparitively) mundane stuff like layer management is amazing. The only two gripes I have are, that the great level of detail is not consisent throughout. I would have appreciated the same level of guidance on this difficult topic. The second and last minor criticism is that, for a reference manual, it would have been good to have things like an overview of shortcut keys and such. All in all, good book though, and well worth the money in time saving alone.Virtually every feature and tool of CS5 is clearly explained. The index is excellent which makes it easy to use the book as reference when you have a question or a problem to solve. I have numerous Photoshop books and this is clearly the best. I had the CS4 version and was so pleased with it that I purchased the CS5 edition as soon as it was available.I have not yet upgraded to CS6, I am still on CS5, so I refer to this still. I am sure that even when I do upgrade to CS6, I will still continue to refer to this. Glad I bought it and glad that Lesa Snider wrote it. Her writing is so conversational and easy to follow.I owned The Missing Manual for Emements 8 before I purchased CS5. I looked for a book in this series and could not find one when I first purchased CS5, yet all the other books out there seemed geared towards more experienced users. This came out about 5 months after I purchased CS5.

I followed the nonlinear chapter order that Snider recommended for photographers at the beginning of the book and then went back to read the rest. If you used the contents or index to jump straight to something you wanted to learn how to do, I feel confident that you would find all of the information you needed. If she references info from a different point in the book, she includes the page number(s) on which it can be found. The appendix on Adobe Bridge was particularly helpful. The appendices, practice files, websites mentioned in the book, and additional tutorials are all available on the Missing CD-ROM page. Definitely worth checking out. At times, using this software has been overwhelming. Almost as overwhelming is this book, Photoshop CS5: The Missing Manual. I borrowed it from my library for a personal crash course in Photoshop. Thankfully, author Lesa Snider leads with an affable, empathetic writing style. As she explains th It comprises the tools of an entire craft. As she explains the hundreds of tools and panels in Photoshop, she keeps in mind her readers’ varying levels of knowledge. She even encourages you to skim or skip sections that likely don’t apply--depending on your specialties. If you want to make a serious effort at becoming fluent in Photoshop, especially if you intend to use it professionally, I believe this book is worth owning (provided you buy the right edition of Photoshop—that’s CS5 in this case). The book offers not only relevant exercises but lots of reference material you can hope to memorize in one read-through. Again, it's worth owning. Getting through this book took me a couple of months, even with skimming a few sections that didn’t apply to me. Now I have incorporated a lot of new knowledge and am already applying it in my job. Using this book was a decision I don’t regret.
