Still, I'm excited about this Great Works series for a number of reasons. Easy to use and comprehensive, these combine all the elements of a good literature study - vocabulary, literary analysis, writing connections, assessments - giving you eye-pleasing, reproducible student pages and a well-constructed, thorough study. But, it's the extras that make them special. First of all, they have culminating activities (Creating with Story Elements) - ways to focus on book specifics, such as understanding the bad guy from Wrinkle in Time. For instance, in Wrinkle, mentally working through geometry dimensions. I like the cross-curricular connections. I like the variety of writing and language activities - in fact there's good variety in all of the activities. And I particularly like the progressive training in writing response to literature compositions. At the earlier levels the student is walked through the response and the writing of it. At the high school level, the student is given choices for different types of writing. These books are essentially teacher's lesson plans with accompanying reproducible activity sheets. The studies are very cohesive both internally as they work through a literature selection and sequentially as one level prepares the student for the next. Because of Winn-Dixie and his friendly ways, Opal makes friends with Miss Frannie, the town librarian, and she gets her first job at Gertrude's Pets, to make money to buy Winn-Dixie a collar. She also meets Gloria Dump, another friend, by following Winn-Dixie into her yard. And she gets invited to the birthday party of Sweetie Pie Thomas. Before finding Winn-Dixie, Opal was lonely, a stranger in a new town, but with her dog's help, she acquired a whole new group of friends for herself in Naomi. Her mother left the family when she was only three, and her father moves from church to church. How has Opal been affected by these family changes. Moving from place to place has left Opal without roots in a community, and when she moves to Naomi, Florida, she feels very lonely. She still feels a great sense of loss from missing her mother, and she has trouble trusting others. She also feels isolated from her own father, who is still struggling with his own grief and who has never talked to his daughter about her own mother. Write the name Winn-Dixie in the center of a piece of paper with a circle around it. Then draw several lines out from the center, like spokes in a wagon wheel. At the end of each line write the name of a character whose life Winn-Dixie touched. What do these characters have in common. Students will notice that Winn-Dixie helps Opal make friends and provides companionship. In many ways, Winn-Dixie is like the glue binding the characters together, helping to forge friendships and create community.In what ways does Gloria act like the mother that Opal doesn't have. Opal feels connected to her father in a new way, since he has begun to talk about Opal's mother and be more honest with his daughter. She has new friends -a community of people she has grown to love.
