Our tank broke, flooding the basement, and we wanted to look into alternative ways to heat our water efficiently. We're in Boston and the tap water here is about 45 degrees. The way this works is that when you turn on the hot water in the house, the unit senses the water flow and begins to heat up a set of pipes inside. As the water passes through, it's heated to about 122 degrees. The pros: - It works normally, just like before. I turn on hot water, I get hot water. - You don't experience any standby losses of having a tank - Gas is only used when you are actually using hot water saving both money and energy. - The water is very hot in the shower. We can also use the dishwasher OR the washing machine with the shower. All three would probably not work well. - There's no footprint. The cons: - It costs more than a traditional tank to both purchase and install.http://elreehavia.com/images/bosch-table-saw-owners-manual.pdf

The unit needs a certain flow to start in order not to damage pipes. All in all, we're extremely happy with this unit since the cons were more a matter of up front cost (but we'll save down the road) and lifestyle changes. I am so glad I purchased this item from someone like Amazon. This is the 3rd tankless water heater I have on my home. I have one on my pool house and I had one for my main house. When I remodeled my bathroom upstairs, I decided to add an additional water heater so I wouldn't have to wait so long for hot water. I purchased the unit and installed it. I could hear the ignitor trying to start the unit. It would never start. I called Bosch and got one of the rudest customer service representatives I have ever dealt with. He told me he couldn't talk to me because I am not a licensed installer. I called the gas company and they checked the unit and said that the gas valve was not opening and that it was either jammed or defective. Bosch told me that they will only send the part to an authorized installer but I would be responsible for any labor charges. I told him that the item should be warrantied to work. He told me that Bosch does not pay labor charges NOR would they take the unit back. He then hung up on me. I love the unit but would NEVER buy another Bosch water heater. I spoke to an attorney and he told me that consumer protection laws would keep them from enforcing their no labor policy, but that I would have to take them to small claims. I would recommend that you buy from any other tankless water heater manufacturer that stands behind their products. Please try again later. Hstar1 1.0 out of 5 stars Correct size gas line Be prepared for some cold showers. First off the installation was shoddy to say the least. When I called and spoke with the installer, he said it was fine. Call back the installer. He goes to Lowes and gets all the trouble shooting info. Alas 2 days, cold showers, nothing changes. First thing I found was the installation was not as it should have been. A horrendous noise, shut down, and no hot water. Make a new gasket, clean up the sensor, re-install, and walla the thing fires and makes hot water. First hot shower in three days. Still the ridiculous noise. I have hot water, and the neighbors all know that. I call Customer service. They won't have anything to do with me. I try to explain to them that I have the ability to trouble shoot this thing. No dice, I'm not a licensed plumber.

Bosch Customer Service is living proof that monkeys can be taught to talk and, fallow a script. I know that my heater is installed properly, has the correct gas flow, etc., etc, etc. Every time the weather changes I have problems with this thing. The thing starts making noise, I increase the hot water flow and the noise goes away. Maybe this thing needs a completely separate, independent water supply, because when you add cold water to the mix, it reduces flow to the water heater, thereby causing water heater to adjust its settings to the reduced cold water flow and the desired temperature. The manuals do suggest 100 to 110 degrees. Yet the default temp is 120. Makes me wonder. These water heaters are NOT that complicated. Seems mine gets water in the gas valve every time the weather gets humid or after it rains. They are nothing to be afraid of. Its nothing but 2 magnetic valves. I have opened mine up and dried it out many times. I drilled a small hole in the bottom of the air inlet duct to allow drainage of any water the may get in there, I would suggest replacing the weather stripping to seal the front cover periodically. I f you have an idea of buying this unit, expect no customer support. Accept that you may have a day or two of cold showers until you figure it out. Its a constant maintenance water heater. Please try again later. Please try again later. Charlie Griffin 2.0 out of 5 stars I had it installed by a licensed plumber. The first problem was finding someone who would take the job. While researching local plumbing contractors who had the know how and expertise to handle the job, I finally landed a company called Washington Home Doctors. They sent a guy out who was a complete joy to have in my home. He was polite, neat and proficient and knew what he was doing. He completed the job from start to finish in about 2 hours, having to reroute pipss and vents. Fast forward to June 27, 2012.

I turned on the kitchen hot water faucet and let it run a few seconds it takes for the water to heat up. NO HOT WATER! I check the user manual troubleshooter's guid and follow the directions for relighting the gas. Didn't work. OK, called Bosch directly to get the names of area qualified service techs. Here's the kicker, ya'll. NO SERVICE TECH WITHIN 100 MILES OF THE WASHINGTON, DC METROPOLITAN AREA!!! ARE YOUR FRIGGIN KIDDING ME???? I sat there on the phone, with the very nice lady who took my call, with my mouth agape because I was completely flabbergasted. You company is supposedly one that sells a high-end product. I called all of them, and only 2 out of the 6 said they could take a look. Called a company who sent a guy out the next day. He took the cover off the examined it and finally got the pilot light to ignite. It's just a matter of pushing holding down one button while pushing in another one. I tried doing that myself, but I wasn't holding down the gas button. I did that buy truing on the kitchen faucet and it worked fine. OK, so now I can't wait to get this guy out the door because I'm DYING to take a hot shower after taking whore's baths for 7 days. Jump in the shower, and the water is great. Turn off the shower and get dressed to go downstairs to wash so dishes. Turn on the faucet. NO FRIGGIN HOT WATER!!! WTF??? I called the plumber back and he said that I probably needed a new gas valve and some other part I can't remember. That's another nightmare. You can only get parts from some online company. Pray they have the part. While I had that water heater for 10 years or more, it worked like a charm. I like the fact that I did not have to worry about water flooding my basement if the tank failed, I would have continuous hot water without the fear of being scalding or frozen, I added valuable floor space in my basement, I liked the fact that I wasn't continuously using gas; the tankless only used gas when you turned on the hot water tap.

It lasted about 10 years which is better than most 5-6year tank heaters. My neighbors' tanks were failing left and right. So, would I buy I tankless again. Maybe in another 10-15 years if they come down in price and have better warranties and qualified local techs. Would I recommend Bosch right now. Not on your life, buds, and I told the kind lady rep at Bosch that, too. Oh, one more thing. Lowes sells Bosch tankless water heaters, but they don't have any recommendations for installation and do not offer technical support. Go figure Home Depot sells Rennai, which seems to be a more popular brand. Most of the plumbers I called said they only service that brand. Please try again later. Please try again later. 0 out of 5 stars The good points regarding this water heater - - Its operation is very economical as it uses very little gas. I have given it a star to recognize its economy. The bad points regarding this water heater - - The water heater shuts down and restarts frequently. This leads to invigorating showers as it alternately produces about 90 seconds of hot water, then about 60 seconds of cold water. Based on what the service techs have told me and the troubleshooting methods they provided, it seems that the unit overheats, shuts down, and restarts after it cools down. The best guess is that the temperature of my incoming water is too high, and the water heater is not capable of heating a little. Being in Hawaii, my incoming water temperature is about 70 degrees. If you get your water as runoff from a glacier, you may find it works just fine. - The water heater demands a fairly high rate of water flow to activate. This means that it does not activate to heat water when running our Whirlpool washing machine. To get hot water into the washer requires turning on a hot water tap and letting it run long enough for the water to heat, and keeping the tap on as long as the washer is filling. Likewise, the flow into our Bosch dishwasher is too low to activate the water heater. This means the internal (electric) water heater in the dishwasher works to bring the water to the necessary temperature, wasting electricity. - It is slow to fire up. This means that, when handwashing dishes or the like, if you turn off the hot water you will get get cold water for a spell after the hot water sitting in the pipe has flowed out. As a result, you need to leave the hot water running continuously for such activities. I could understand a brief bit of cold water, but we are talking about 10 to 15 seconds of cold each time the hot water is turned off. - The water heater uses approximately 5 watts of electricity continuously, more when the exhaust blower is operating.

This amount of electric usage is ridiculous and goes far to offset the claimed efficiency. My experiences with this and my Bosch dishwasher have completely disillusioned me on Bosch appliances and I will avoid them in the future. Please try again later. Please try again later. SusanM 2.0 out of 5 stars We purchased this from Lowes, not from Amazon, to be clear. What we were not told, however, was all the extra parts (vent kit, etc) that were needed (at additional expense) to even get the thing installed. Then, we were not initially told that Lowes had no one on staff who knew a thing about these types of heaters, and so we had to search around to find a plumber who could put it in. All in all, it cost us A LOT more than a regular hot water heater would have, which several other reviewers have stated. The main thing I am extremely unhappy about is that in summer, we have 2 temperatures to choose from, ice cold and scalding. There is no in between. Even if you try to add some cold water to the mix, it helps for about 10 seconds and then the water heater compensates for the cold water coming in and makes it super hot again. We have a young child and this makes everything a lot more difficult. It's one thing when I get scalded in the shower, but it's a huge problem when I have to take major precautions to be sure the baby doesn't get hurt. My plumber called Bosch several times last year to try to get our issue resolved. After several service calls (all at my expense) and doing everything they told him to do to check the water heater, they finally just said that the weather was hot, therefore the groundwater was warm and so our water would be scalding, and there was nothing else to be done about it. Now our baby is walking and loves to play in the water while I'm running her bath, which I have to do by running in hot water and then turning off the hot completely and running in cold water until the bath is warm. I'm really worried she's going to get burnt.

So I called Bosch myself today. I didn't expect much after reading the other reviews, but thought it was worth a shot. Here is the best part. After being on hold for over 40 minutes, the customer service rep who finally answered asked me if my husband was home, since I needed someone to be here who could use tools!! I went through the entire story of my plumber calling several times, and he finally found that information and put me through to the technical support group, which meant I was on hold another 20 minutes or more. At that point a technician answered, I gave him my service number and told him my story, and was just told that he couldn't talk to me, my plumber was the only one he would talk to because he needed someone to remove the cover and run tests. These, I'm sure, are the same tests they had him run the last time he was here, to no avail. Of course they're not. So this is just more money that this water heater is going to cost me. If they can't get it fixed this time, I'm going to just shell out the money for a regular hot water heater with a tank (but NEVER a Bosch brand!!) and be done with it. It will be worth it to be rid of this thing. I do have to say that in winter, the heater runs well, the water is nice and warm, not too hot or too cold, but it does take a long time for hot water to reach our sinks, shower, etc. But it is much nicer to live with in the winter than in the summer, and that is the only reason it is getting 2 stars from me rather than 1. We are asked a lot about our tankless heater, and we always reply that the concept is nice, only having to pay for hot water when you need it and the endless supply, and the fact that it doesn't take up floor space. But we would NEVER recommend to anyone to get one of these, especially not this brand, since we have been so unhappy with it overall!!Please try again later. Please try again later. Light User 2.

Since I did my own install and know everything I diagnosed it myself and their tech also guesses it is a bad burner (that costs 245.00) as it now emits a loud bang. The pro who is a local also says they get cranky after 7 years and the electronics start to go. This sounds like a nightmare waiting to happen. I had enough issues with fluctuating water temp and error codes already and am glad I didnt spend the aprox. 200.00 it would have cost to diagnose it from a service tech. Bosch wont talk to anyone working on it unless they are a licensed repair. Im going to just replace it with a normal tank. The enormous amount of btus used to fire it up every time evens out the btus used on a normal tank so theres not much to gain on that issue. If I cant fix it or use reasonably priced local parts I dont want it. I need reliability also. Please try again later. Please try again later. Green Reviews 1.0 out of 5 stars Since the heater needs a.8 gpm minimum flow to turn on its burner, you can't run faucets or showers on very low settings because the low flow will not trigger the unit's burner. Tasks that call for short bursts of hot water (like hand-washing dishes in the kitchen) need to run longer to pull hot water through the line from the unit to the faucet -every time you shut off the water- you create a new hot-cold-hot water 'sandwich' in the hot water line. The heater worked out of the box, BUT it makes a loud whistling sound when a single shower or appliance is calling for hot water. How loud? Let's just say my neighbors across the street know when we're in the shower.

Although I've now found this very same problem in reviews from online users (along with some others), the folks at Bosch Water Heating in Waitsfield, VT acted like this whistling was not a known problem nor did they have any helpful solutions. I had already done every diagnostic they walked me through before contacting their technical support line. I questioned why that would work any better for me than for the others and the Tech rep just fell quiet. Hmm, sounds like a common problem that others have reported, with the same ineffective suggestion from Bosch. Why is Bosch treating customers like they've never heard of these problems rather than just offing customers a fix, or better yet recalling the defective units off the market. Overall, I just can't recommend this unit to anyone. Please try again later. Please try again later. Amazon Customer 2.0 out of 5 stars It has gotten used about half that time, since we are out of town a lot. It works great during the winter when we take hot showers. However, in the summer when the weather is hot, I do not like to take hot showers. I prefer cool showers. This requires a bit of hot water mixed with the cold water to keep the cold water from being too cold. This usually results in the water flow through the water heater dropping below the minimum flow required for the flame to be on, so it shuts off the flame and I end up with cold water only. A couple of weeks ago, it started requiring warmer and warmer water for the flame to stay burning until yesterday, when the flame just stopped coming on. There are no error codes to check and when I used the diagnostic program built into the unit, the mode to check the water flow shows no water is flowing through the water heater even though the water faucet is wide open and the water is flowing. Well, if the unit does not detect water flow, the burner does not light and there are not errors, because the unit isn't detecting a problem.

What dropped this to a 2 star is the support from Bosch. I install all of my own plumbing, electrical and anything else I have to to renovate a house. But Bosch does want to expose their tech support to stupid homeowning do-it-yourselfers because they are too worried about getting sued. So if you want plenty of hot water for less than two years, buy a Bosch. Please try again later. Please try again later. It may not display this or other websites correctly. You should upgrade or use an alternative browser. This continues until unit is shut off and reset. It may work a week then returns to this flucuation. The unit was descaled and the hot water outlet temp sensor replaced. Bosch support has been no help what ever. They want a licensed plumber here to even suggest a fix. I have been a contractor to install electrical and plumbing for many years and i followed Bosch specs to the tee and did all maintenance as required. If i need to pay to have a no-knowledge guy here to take a call i will scrap the Bosch and go else where. Can anyone suggest a fix. Is there a sofware fix?The temperature sensor will often have a chart indicating the resistance for a certain temperature.you want a quality ohmmeter to verify that, but a cheap one will still vary as the temperature changes. The manual often will give the testing procedures. It's essentially, either the sensor is not working, or its signal is not getting to the control board, or the board is not reliably responding. I suppose it could be a sticky gas control valve. What does the troubleshooting section say. You may need to get a service manual, and that may be hard if there's not much in the owner's manual. The kit contains a jumper and an instruction manual. The Bosch Therm Gas Conversion Kit is designed to work with the following Bosch Therm Tankless Water Heaters: 940ES, 940ESO and 830ES as well as the Bosch AquaStar 2700ES, 2400ES, 2400E, 250SX and 250SXO and Bosch ProTankless 635ES, 715ES and Evolution 500 heaters.
