SM2187 3.0 out of 5 stars I would say that the pedal does an ok job but seems a little non user friendly when it comes to overdubbing. It would be nice to have an undo setting but I'm guessing that this would require a more advanced chip. Also, this could be user error but it never seems to get the parts synced quite correctly. It is nice to be able to record my parts and come back to them. I've never used this in live situation but I can't really see it being an easy pedal to use looping. It's like I'm in some kind of loop!!! Sun went down, then came back up. Moon did too! This item is great!!! It's obviously universal!!!!I have found the built in drum guide is really REALLY loud.
http://www.galerijabalta.lt/fckeditor/editfiles/boss-gx-700-owners-manual.xml
Even when turned to the minimum volume I often find it too loud and overpowering. The 8 different drum beats are uninteresting. You can not program in the beats per minute, you have to pedal stomp it in, or button tap it in. That's a bit of a drag. The phrase recording works well and easily. I use this pedal all the time, especially to practice.Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Please try again Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Please try again. Normal signs of wear; works as it should. Does not include power supply. From Boss: Whether for use onstage or at home, the new RC-20XL allows musicians to create multi-layered performances in real time. Loops and riffs can be stacked repeatedly until the 16 minutes (!) of ample recording space is full. Never before has it been so easy to create a massive “one-person band” sound in real time. But now you get approximately 16 minutes of recording time to capture and store loops or one-shot phrases (three times that of the RC-20), and you can work your way backward thanks to the new Undo function, a necessity when making mistakes during overdub. Performance Tools The RC-20XL has 11 memory tracks, in which you have the choice of storing either one-shot phrases or loop phrases. During your performance, you can switch between the tracks with an optional FS-6 Dual Footswitch, or two FS-5U footswitches (momentary-type). The Undo function can be a useful and musical function for erasing your previous phrase and instantly layering a new one. After you have dazzled your crowd, now its time to bring it to an end. The RC-20XL offers three stop options for this purpose. These sections provide important information concerning the proper operation of the unit. Additionally, in order to feel assured that you have gained a good grasp of every feature provided by your new unit, Owner’s manual should be read in its entirety. You can use it as a reminder of operational procedures.

When this occurs, please replace them with new batteries. 12 REC Indicator This indicator will light during recording. The performance from an instrument or microphone connected to the INST jack or MIC jack can be recorded to create a loop phrase. If there are any empty phrase tracks, both the LOOP PHRASE and ONE SHOT PHRASE indicators remain off. As you did in step 2, select the overdubbing method. This function makes it easy to create “minus-one” data for practicing. You can also adjust the tempo while the phrase plays back. By pressing the REVERSE button, lighting its indicator, you can use reverse playback. These settings also determine how the guide tone will play, and how loop quantization will occur. If you do not wish to hear the guide tone, turn the GUIDE knob to the OFF position. MIC: 1 k ? AUX IN: 47 k ? Nominal Output Level OUTPUT: -20 dBu Output Impedance 1 k. Recommended Load Impedance 10 k. For EU Countries For Canada This Class B digital apparatus meets all requirements of the Canadian Interference-Causing Equipment Regulations. The quantization optimizes the final part of the phrase, so to obtain a perfect loop. Easy and fast. It can store up to eleven phrases, and allows a recording up to a maximum of 16 minutes. The Undo function is, obviously, very useful, and the tempo of the phrase can be adjusted in real time, without changing the pitch. The Mic input is designed specifically for the voice and this expands the versatility of the device. With the Aux In the user can easily import an audio signal from an external source, like a player or the soundcard output of the PC.Everything is clear and immediate.

Let's see the main function of all the various buttons and knobs. This knob adjusts the volume. Each input features a dedicated volume. An important added value of this Boss looper. The user can realize a perfect mix of the two signals. In the manual there are all the explanations of how select each of the three functions. It turns out very useful to get a clean file, but also to optimize the memory capacity. It provides many interesting and useful functions, and it can be used for many different purposes. Controls are clear and immediate, and they can be used quickly and without problems, also if you are a newbie in looping. The manual is complete and with all you need to learn how to use the device in a moment. The price is valid and proportionate to the quality of the RC-20XL.An important characteristic is that this is an all-analog pedal. A good multi-effects at an affordable price. Subscribe to our free newsletter It uses digital flash memory technology to store your samples and loops. It is not rackable in any traditional sense. UTILIZATION Everything is accessible from the front face. Switching through loops is much easier live when using a separate foot switch (such as the FX-6). You also have all the options of what happens at the start and the end of your loops which can be edited using multi function buttons. Normally that is a pain but they made it a little easier by adding bright light indicators indicating what selection you are making. The manual is clear (which can't be said for most Roland manuals) and extremely helpful, especially if you want to learn how to use all the functions including auto fade, reverse and such. SOUND QUALITY I use this mainly with my acoustic guitar for solo singer songwriter sets. I also sometimes use it in my main electronic rig to loop noise samples on the fly.
http://ag4fw.com/images/boss-loop-rc-20xl-manual.pdf
It is almost impossible to perfectly sync up with a steady beat like Ableton generates, so I use it on the noise samples as they don't require perfect sync to do whats intended. I feel like the sound is in fact colored a little as the mids and lows get a little muddy and the lowend gets a little cut. It works for live purposes for me as my solo acoustic sets are not played in large upscale venues. But I don't think I would bring it to a big gig, if I ever have one OVERALL OPINION What I like most about this unit is how quickly and easily I can start looping with it. All my other looping gear requires a lot of units turned on including a computer. With this little guy, I just plug in my guitar in one end, the amp in the other and I'm good to go. What I don't like is the fact that the sound quality does suffer. I also wish this thing had Midi sync. Despite the sound quality issue, I would use it a lot more if I could sync it with ableton. I also had the RC-50 for awhile but it suffered from a host of bugs and other issues that eventually caused me to sell it. Did you find this review helpful? yes no. It also has a smaller jack for an auxiliary input. I have powered the pedal with the Boss power supply that can along with it, and I'm not sure what other kind of power supply would be able to power it up. Obviously enough, the RC-20XL isn't rack mountable as it is a workstation controlled by your feet. UTILIZATION The Boss RC-20XL Loop Station has a ton of features to work, so getting acquainted with everything that it has to offer will take a little bit of time. Having said this, the pedal has everything laid out clearly, there are just a lot of features to get used to. You can store up to 11 phrases at a time, so there is a knob to choose between them, as well as parameters for level, guide, mic and instrument input levels, and buttons for reverse, tap tempo, write, exit, auto start, and mode.
There are two foot pedals which control the recording, overdubbing, and erasing of your phrases. Getting used to everything going on with the Boss RC-20XL Loop Station took me a little bit of practice, but Boss makes it easy enough that all it takes is a bit of time. If you're a beginner or new with looping, it might be a good idea to have the manual around as well. SOUND QUALITY The Boss RC-20XL Loop Station doesn't offer up any actual sounds of its own really, beyond throwing your sounds in reverse. However, the pedal won't color your tone in anyway other than how you set it. Everything goes in exactly the way that it comes out, which is what you look for in a pedal of this nature. I've used the pedal with a Fender Jazzmaster Reissue and a '76 Fender Twin Reverb. I just love layering different phrases and riffs, and having in total 16 minutes of recording really makes it possible to save everything that you'd like. A few other cool features on the pedal include auto quantization, and the ability to change the tempo without changing the pitch, which is really awesome. OVERALL OPINION As far as looping pedals go, the Boss RC-20XL Loop Station is probably the most complete one that I have seen to date. There are a bunch to choose from nowadays like those made by Digitech and Line 6, but Boss, as per usual is at the top of their game here. The RC-20XL is also a pretty considerable upgrade from the RC-20, as it gives you more storage space and time to work with. The price isn't all that cheap, but is about right for a looping station with this much versatility and features. I'd encourage those interested in looping pedals to absolutely check out this pedal as well as Digitech JamMan and the Line 6 JM4, but the Boss RC-20XL is definitely my favorite of the bunch. Did you find this review helpful? yes no Almost all are based there UTILIZATION Very fast and easy to use It is the ideal companion for all guitar part (verse chorus solo) Once owned hard to pass.

SOUND QUALITY The sound is good or at least sufficient for its use. Obviously the Digitech sounds better but is more expensive That said when multiple overlay sound track is always kept clean OVERALL OPINION I've used a long I tried the largest model of a friend (floorboard) to 5 pedals but the use was more tedious and its worst In short A good looper to buy eyes closed 6 of 6 people found this review helpful Did you find this review helpful? yes no. Physical pedal very easy to use. UTILIZATION Intuitive use, very accessible in 2 minutes. The instructions are clear and simple. SOUND QUALITY Outstanding quality. I use it with a guitar looper and if I use it on stage sampler to send the sample to the feet live and rendering quality is top notch and easy to use. OVERALL OPINION I use it for 4 years and I had the opportunity to test everything that was in this area (in fact I worked in a music store) and it is the easiest to use and most importantly the more manageable and intuitive. Plus the price is very reasonable for the quality and strength of the product. I have the older model with 10 bank and if I were to resume today I would resume the same with the bank 99 (new model) but my choice would be this brand and this series. 4 of 4 people found this review helpful Did you find this review helpful? yes no. Only 11 sentences memorized, quickly filled, each with an infinite number of layers overdub, but best avoided 16 minutes of recording time which I've never been to the end. No possibility of plugging in headphones. Good finish and solid. UTILIZATION Extremely intuitive and convenient for those who, like me, prefer to have both hands free to play and not permanently buttons or mouse settings on a PC.Small flat, only the first sentence can overdub can be deleted, and even if it has not yet been registered. No opportunity to touch her curls later some manner whatsoever except by adding new layers. 11 tracks is not much. SOUND QUALITY The sound is more than adequate.
This is not a recording studio is just the equivalent of the sketchbook cartoonist. I'm still making good music delusions organizing my tracks and reproducing the content of Ableton. Y largely by laying a few demo tasty. OVERALL OPINION Since 2008, he has become unavoidable even if I start to squint on the RC-300 allows greater opportunities. He never fails, always solid and impeccable after 4 years of fairly intensive use. If you are curious go listen to some loops made entirely or partly with the beast (sorry purists) May seem expensive, 289 euros for me at the time but it is no longer manufactured suddenly looking around 150 euros secondhand. I would do the same choice without hesitation, though. The audio connector is 6.35 Jack, inputs and outputs.UTILIZATION Very simple to use and easy handling. I have not read the manual. Features playback, recording, overdubbing, are clearly understandable on the pedals. SOUND QUALITY The RC 20 XL has a clear sound, clean, overdubs are net. Microphones and guitars. Most: strength, sound, ease. Least to date are too short sentences, no XLR input, no USB, therefore insufficient memory. I switched to other models and then the voice processor as the EV 20 and nearest the Voice Live Play, Loopers have integrated as well before the Digitech pedal guitars or Racks. I commit: Most: strength, sound, ease. UTILIZATION Ultra-simple. SOUND QUALITY The sound is decent, nothing extraordinary course because there is no provision for adjustment (if not the volume.) but overall it holds up. The microphone input is a plus but the quality is very poor. We must recognize that we not buy this pedal to the microphone input. OVERALL OPINION To judge this pedal, it must be seen in context: This is an excellent tool. Great for work and improvisation also very useful to train with vocal harmonies. I use it for several years of very intensive (daily), difficult to say precisely how long (3 or 4 years just to be).
It's solid, I can testify (xD) and functional. A choice that I will ever again! 3 of 3 people found this review helpful Did you find this review helpful? yes no By using our services, you agree to our use of cookies. Find out more. It's a great practice tool, plus it doesn't sleep on your couch, borrow money, or run off with your girlfriend. Upgraded it to RC-30 a couple years ago. But it only has 1 looping channel and just 11 banks, my main reason to upgrade to RC 30. It's a beast for practicing and definitey has it's place on live situations as well. Mic in is awesome for budget situations. RC-30 is the replacement. I keep this thing at the end of my chain, way after my dirt pedals and my noise suppressor loop, so if I want to use the looper, I just have to put up with a bunch of noise. As long as you don't mind the fewer number of memory banks and inputs, the RC-20 will do anything you need a looper to do. Easy to record, overdub, and store loops. Really cool reverse function.
I wish my ditto would auto-start recording like the RC-20. The RC-20 also has a mic line in, although its unbalanced, and you can use that as a secondary instrument in as well. An auxiliary input is there if you have need for it. I have yet to explore its depths. This is a hugely useful tool. Nothing over the top, just a solid lil' box. Stop and play little bit tricky when you on the 2nd track. Couple it with footswitch FSU, and definitely will make your life easier. Loops and riffs can be stacked repeatedly until the 16 minutes (!) of ample recording space is full. In Boss’s older RC-2x series, the RC-20XL offered a wide range of features in a much smaller (and cheaper) package than the monster RC-50, but easier access to its features than the much smaller RC-2. The RC-20XL was actually an upgrade of the now obsolete RC-20, which only offered 5 minutes and 30 seconds of recording time, compared to the RC-20XL’s 16 minutes. In this way complex sounds can be built up all on your lonesome, giving full reign to your imagination, if the equipment is up to the job, of course. For more info on looping, click here. The pedal houses two pedals for remote access, and has various dials and buttons for it’s more intimate features. The sixteen minutes of memory can be spread across up to eleven different phrases, which can be recalled at any time. So if you jam something out that you want to use live, you can write it to memory, and then it’s ready to use live. There are outputs for your amp, and a couple for the additional pedals needed to access more features when operating the RC-20XL remotely. The fact that these additional pedals are necessary is a point of some frustration, as it of course adds to the overall price. The mounted footswitches are all you’ll really need to use for an initial play around. The left pedal is used to record, play and overdub, and can also be held for a few seconds to undo the last overdub.
So, you give it a tap to start recording, and another when your opening phrase is completed. This will then set it playing in a loop; in my mind the opening from The Raconteurs’ Steady As She Goes is pumping away, a solid, repeating bass line ready for your next tap, the overdub. After hitting the pedal, you slide into the opening lead part, then another pedal tap and it repeats, allowing you a bit of time to undo the last dub with a few seconds’ press and launch into the punching, staccato riff. All of that drama, from one footswitch and your guitar. Not quite as dramatic, I concede, but there eventually does come a time to kill the sound and bask in silent pride. The middle dial goes all the way up to eleven, but unfortunately isn’t volume (output volume on the left, and two for the inputs on the right); it is used to simply select a phrase. A light beside the knob will tell you if you have something saved in the selected location already. This dial is the only way to select a phrase without use of an external (and separately sold) footswitch. Think of it as having your own personal unimaginative, one-armed drummer to dutifully whack out any one of eight beats at a moment’s notice. Unfortunately, though, there is no option to manually dial in a tempo in BPM. The problem with this is that it beats your music with it’s archaic mixing hammer and leaves you with a lot of noticeable system-intervention. Or there’s always the old-fashioned way if you’re the hands-on sort. Hit the button, and your phrase plays in reverse. Cool if you’re into odd ambient soundscapes or delving into the glamorous world of subliminal, guitar-based, Satanic messages. In other words, when you start playing, it records automatically. This is useful if you have sections of a song stored in various places, but you would ideally need to purchase the external pedals to get the smoothest change.
The memory, though sufficient for general use, is not enough if you want to use it to store hours of backing tracks, and there isn’t the option of saving phrases externally via USB. So essentially, eleven is your lot. Also, technologically, it’s worth noting that the RC-20XL only records in mono. It is transparent, only messing around with your sound in ways that you want it to. If you stack up overdub after overdub there is some loss in sound quality though, but that is to be expected. Additionally, the manual is very helpful, and after a few minutes of being a bookworm, you’ll be back to rock star. Because of the functionality of the RC-20XL it can be used to improve your playing, either by giving you an endless backing track to jam to, or through any of it’s features, for example: the ability to adjust a piece’s tempo could serve as a daily shred workout to gradually improve speed. It is, in a lot of ways, a vital companion for the solo guitar player. The RC-20XL comes at a more affordable price than the larger RC-50, but you have to remember to tack on the cost of the footswitches and the mains adapter. Unless you want to consume more batteries than the Duracell Bunny on speed, that is. There are some hidden functions that you must trawl through the manual to fully understand, and you might have to spend a bit of money to get a solid live set-up, but on the whole the RC-20XL provides more than enough for standard looping needs, and is a vital part of many guitarists’ set ups. It is a direct upgrade of the RC-20, which offered a lot of the same ideas in a more basic form, and has now of course been made obsolete by the new model. The main areas that have been improved are the memory (Sixteen minutes recording compared to the RC-20’s paltry five minutes and thirty seconds), and the implementation of the pedal’s features, which will be discussed in more detail later. Check Amazon Price It also mentions that the pedal can “negatively affect tone.
” What are the best pedals to counteract both of these issues? This is a pretty old looper and some of the newer loopers are improving on sound quality. For example, the TC Electronics Ditto and Ditto X2, and the Pigtronix Infinity all have superior audio quality at 24 bits. Of those, I would go for the Infinity just because it has more features. As for functioning well in live settings, it kind of depends how complex you want to get with your live looping. For casual playing, you’ll be fine with any pedal that has at least two footswitches so that you can stop and clear loops without having to double tap. If you want to get complex and, for example, control 3 independent loops each with their own layers of overdubs, maybe check out the monster Boss RC-300. Then again, you can probably pick up an old RC-20XL on ebay for super cheap. Its almost impossible to do a clean count in and drop in drums and the first loop without a weird milli-pause on completion of the first loop. For me it isn’t feasible, too much plastic and like your review; too many fx are already covered by other dedicated pedals. It was a problem with all of the older Boss Loop Stations. Let me know what you think about the RC-30. There used to be a lag when switching phrases, but it should be resolved by a firmware update. I’m learning. Thanks for the page. Is really really helpful for me. I don’t Know if this is the right place to post this. I use to record a lot of acoustic instruments. And the idea is to buy a vox dynamic or a boss RC30. I have a sm58 mic, and a boss rc20xl, but I have to be very close to the mic, and when I sing or play in low volume the looper doesn’t catch it (the vol level go up and down, or directly dissappear). I don’t know if is a problem of the mic, or the pedal. So I wonder if maybe is a matter of selecting a different type of mic. But with the guitar 360 nano ele harmon.Just purchased a Ditto x2 looper.
