Bronco Manual Hub Removal PDF Download

This reduces wear and tear on the front axle. Hub components are often made of cast aluminum and can break easily. Locking hubs are disconnected when the vehicle is put into two-wheel drive, and reconnected for changing back to four-wheel driving. It is necessary to disassemble the manual locking hubs when they break or wear out and and need replacing. Step 1 Use a jack to raise the vehicle and bring the wheel up to a more serviceable height. Step 2 Remove the hub cap, if your truck has one. You may need to use a tire iron or a flat-head screwdriver to pry it off. Step 3 Locate the silver ring that has two tabs sticking out from its sides. This is the retaining ring. Pinch these tabs toward each other with your fingers to remove the ring. If it is too difficult to remove with your fingers, use a pair of pliers to pinch the tabs. Grasp the lockout portion of the hub firmly with your fingers. Wiggle the lockout portion up and down and back and forth, pulling it away from the hub to remove it. You may need a rubber mallet to help gently knock it loose. Tips Make sure you have the necessary tools before starting the project. After removal, make sure the parts are kept together and in order. Manual locking hubs may vary by model of truck. Refer to the owner's manual for detailed information on the locking hubs installed on your truck. Warning Manual locking hubs are designed for off-road use and do not create independent wheel traction like differential locks. How to Turn the Check Engine Light off. I first bought the Warn premiums and was dissatisfied with the cheap chrome cap (which was peeling right out of the box). I sent them back and got these which look better, seem to work better, are less expensive and have a stainless steel outer cap instead of a chrome plated zinc housing. I would buy these again in an instant.Very nice quality with the castings and machining and they look nice and clean in stainless steel. I used these to replace non-selectable hubs on the Dana 44 front axle on my 1975 Jeep Wagoneer that came equipped with a full time 4 wheel drive system.

I am swapping the original Borg-Warner 1339 quadratrac transfer case for a part time Dana 20. I have had my front drive shaft removed for a few hundred miles (with the t-case in emergency lockout). For anyone else out there doing this (driving around in 2 wheel drive) with their quadratrac equipped rig; being able to unlock the front axle shafts from the hubs will help out your steering a lot. My front end is all brand new and has a fresh spring over conversion. Still had very sensitive steering after all this brand new work and a good alignment; added these hubs and the steering feels much tighter, as in less reactive to steering inputs. Only reason I can think of is that the axle shafts while spinning helped to amplify steering inputs.I previously purchased Warn hubs on Amazon but had to return them. (Only one of the two hubs would slide into the axle hub.) These Mile Marker's are less expensive than the Warn hubs and they fit better and work perfectly. I think the quality of the internal components is superior to Warn.Auto Hubs require the adapter kit Since I already had The six bolt type assembly this was only a matter of removing the old Hubs and installing the new ones. They work great and look sharp. My first set has been on my truck for 4 years and untold abusive dirt and pavement miles and still looks great. I get a positive lock and unlock every time. Hard to beat for the price. Those were always tough to engage when it was cold out so I decided to give these Mile Marker hubs a try. I love them so far! It's also nice that they're stainless covered. Of course the inside is aluminum or some similar white metal but that's fine. The only reason I'm not giving a five star is that the screws that came with the hubs were mismatched. What's odd is that they were in the same sealed package. Some were stainless and some were zinc coated. Weird. They engage and disengage nicely. Bring it winter!I have had stock manual hubs and stock auto hubs.

These are better than both by far unlike stock manual hubs thiese are all metal and rotate easy. And unlike my auto hubs I know when my hubs are locked in and thiese don't wonder in and out of locked while I drive on road. Easy installation it took about 20 mins. It would have been faster but I installed one with the letters upside down and decided to fix it. Cause I knew it would bother me. And I got free 2 day shipping from amazon prime and it got here overnight. Less than 24 hours later I had them in my hands. So to recap it was a great deal, easy installation, works and looks great and super fast shipping. The last time I did this Reagan was in the White House. There is also an inside snap ring on the hub. Behind that there is are two spindle nuts with a lock ring between the two. Using the special socket for these nuts, remove the first nut, remove the locking ring (a small pick helps to get it loose from the grease), then remove the second nut. The hub and rotor assembly should come right off (as long as the calipers have already been removed).

As mentioned, there is the obvious snap ring on the axle, and another large one on the circumference of the hub which is usually well hidden in the grease, which you get a sharp pick under and work it out. As you remove each piece I would wipe it clean and set them on a piece of cardboard in order so they go back together in the correct order. This is a great example of why all Bronco owners should get a Chilton's manual. There are 11 different parts before you get to the outer wheel bearing. Good luck Separating them is the next root canal. Also, since I'm this far I'm going to take off the backing plate and steam clean everything paint and re-install. And yes, I wish I never included my Chilton manual when I sold my 73 back in 83. Thanks again to all I appreciate it. Click this, read the caption, and continue to the NEXT several: I’ve removed all of the snap rings and the first spindle nut. There’s a second spindle nut but it doesn’t spin off like the first. There’s a groove along the spindle so it looks like I need a puller tool to get this one off. Can anyone confirm that I’m on the right track. Thank you, Todd Cortez, CO You have to use a pick and pull it out, it has a tab that runs in the slot on the spindle. After you remove that washer the second nut will come out as easy as the first one.Okay, took a look.does the locking washer have tiny holes around the perimeter. I took a pic, but not sure how to attach it to this thread. Thanks again for your help!!! Glad you got it figured out. Clever way to get the pic uploaded too. Well worth it if you end up hanging out here often. If you're not familiar with the proper bearing adjusting procedure, let us know. It's very specific to Dana axles. By-the-book works very well. Another thing we've run into over the last few years is poor quality control of brake pads. Usually too thick to fit over the rotor. The solution is to take them back and look in the boxes until you find a correctly made set.

Sometimes trying a different brand. Good luck. Paul Make sure the stub lines up in a hole on the washer so it sits flat against the inner nut before you put the 2nd nut on or you will have issues. I’m hoping to tackle putting it all back together this week. I have the Detroit Iron OEM Shop Manual, which has been very helpful. I’ll read up on the bearing adjustment procedure and if questions will post. Is it Bronco-specific, or generic. If it does not have the Dana procedure, it likely does not have the correct info. So just in case, it goes like this: 1. Inner nut (bearing adjusting nut) with the small pin facing out is torqued to 50lbs while you spin the rotor. The bearings will be very loose at this point, but ignore that. 3. Locking ring slides over the spindle with the tab in the slot and verify that the pin slips fully into a hole. If not, pull the ring off and flip it over to see if that helps (the holes are offset from the tab, so flipping it might work). If the pin still does not line up with a hole, reach in with a finger or tool and turn the adjusting nut just slightly enough to line up with the nearest hole. When doing this it is recommended that you move the nut looser, rather than tighter. Obviously, the 50lb initial torque, and then that 100lb final torque, is why you have to buy or rent one of those hub-nut sockets and add it to your arsenal of tools for your truck. Even some pro-shops don't have the correct ones anymore, so it really can pay to have your own. When you see a mechanic try to set these with a hammer and chisel(!) you'll realize your sub-twenty dollar purchase was priceless. Have fun! Fuel economy may improve as much as one mile per gallon, depending on the vehicle, by disconnecting the front wheels. A one mpg difference may not sound like much, but every little bit helps. The automatic locking hub does it automatically on the fly. The locking mechanism inside an automatic locking hub is sort of like a one-way clutch. When torque is applied by the driveshaft, it forces the hub to slide in and lock. When the driver shifts to two-wheel drive, the clutch mechanism inside the hub slides back out and releases the hub, allowing the wheel to turn independent of its axle shaft. Some of the older types require the vehicle to stop and back up a short distance to engage the locking mechanism. Some automatic locking hubs don’t engage in reverse, and others use a vacuum diaphragm to engage the hub (or the axle shaft) when switching between two- and four-wheel-drive modes. With this setup, the hub on the opposite side remains locked and the axle continues to turn with the wheel. But as long as the transfer case remains in the 2WD mode, the front wheels are not driven. When the transfer case is shifted into 4WD, the unlocked hub automatically slides into position and locks the axle so both front wheels become drive wheels. This allows the hub to engage as needed or to remain in the locked position all the time. A locked differential is great for serious off-roading because it keeps both front wheels turning regardless of traction. But, it can make a vehicle difficult to handle or steer when driving on dry or wet pavement, snow, loose dirt or sand.

Mud, rust or worn parts inside the hub can prevent the mechanism from sliding in and locking the hub. The driver may not notice anything is wrong until he finds himself stuck axle deep in mud and realizes the front wheels aren’t doing anything. Or, he may hear some grinding noises when he shifts to four-wheel drive and may think something is wrong with the transfer case or front differential. Anything that binds the internal mechanism can prevent it from sliding and releasing.Put the transmission in park, set the parking brake and raise the chassis so one of the front wheels is off the ground while the other is still on the ground. When the transfer case is in two-wheel drive, the hubs should be released, allowing the wheels to turn freely when spun by hand. If the axle shaft turns when you spin the wheel, it means the hub has not disengaged. This should lock the hub. Try turning the wheel by hand again. The axle shaft should now turn with the wheel if the hub is locked. If the hub fails to lock, the hub will have to be disassembled and inspected or replaced. You should hear a click as the locking mechanism slides back out and disengages the hub. Rotate the wheel forward again and it should turn freely. Then start the engine and place the transfer case in four-wheel drive and the transmission in drive. If the front wheels don’t turn, look at the front axle shafts. If both shafts are turning, but one wheel is not, the problem is a bad hub on the wheel that isn’t turning. If the front driveshafts are not turning when the transfer case is in four-wheel drive, the problem is inside the differential (broken side gears) or the transfer case (broken chain, shift linkage, etc.). If the driveshaft between the transfer case and differential is turning, the problem is in the differential. If the driveshaft is not turning, the vehicle is going to need repairs to the transfer case. The outer hub cover is usually attached to the hub with five or six Torx screws.

Disassembly and reassembly procedures will vary from one hub design to another, so refer to the OEM service information for the specifics. If you don’t have manual or online service information, disassemble one hub at a time. That way, if you can’t remember how the parts came apart, you can always refer to the other hub as a guide. This allows for computer assistance such as Adaptive Cruise Control, and Electronic Stability Control. However, a knowledge of the mechanical and electronic component operation is imperative to successfully diagnosing and fixing these systems. Unlocked the hubs and the passenger side remained locked and clunking. Went to replace the Warn lockers and the axle is not centered and will not move. My question is, is this a bent axle or a hub issue. Any help is appreciated before we pull it apart. I'm new to FWD mechanics. Thanks Glenn In any case., something is broken or amiss in there.! It's not hard at all. Take pics as you go if you're worried. It helps to get things back in the correct order. Could be a failed U-joint. You will need a spindle socket to get the nut off. Re-installation requires a torque wrench to properly seat the nuts.NOTE: The hubs are not required to seat against the wheel housing when installed, they may move in and out quite easily. Note that, to make the drawing easier, the axle tube (bright green) is shown inclined. The axis of the ball joints (the centers of the balls; not necessarily the shafts) must pass through the center of the U-joint whenever the U-joint is rotating. The 96, Vapor Management Valve (VMV) replaces the canister purge valve (CanP valve) used in EEC IV. The Speed Control Deactivation Switch (SCDS) in a 93 Bronco is located on the driver side frame rail, but in 94 through 96 it is on the master cylinder.

Still researching other differences. Refer to the Manual Locking Hub removal and installation procedures in this section. etc. Best is to print it out.. Since it has Warn manual hubs, I assume a previous owner or shop swapped the original automatic locking hubs; or swapped the Ford manual hubs that were supplies by Warn. Back off the adjusting nut approximately 45 degrees. Assemble the lock washer by turning the inner lockout to align the pin with the nearest hole in the lock washer. To lock it, install the outer lock nut and tighten it to 150 foot pounds. Grab the top of the tire with one hand and the bottom of the tire with the other. Move the tire in and out on the spindle. Some may loan it to you with refundable deposit. Also referred to as Spindle Nut Socket, Dana 44, etc. By continuing to use this site, you are consenting to our use of cookies.
