I don't know whether it's Epson's fault or Microsoft's. Anyways, I decided to buy a new scanner. One function that the GT-1500 lacks is the automatic 1-pass 2-sided scanning. I scan and digitize as many paperwork as I could, so this is a critical and convenient function to have. That's one of the reasons I chose this Brother all-in-one machine. The quality is nowhere near the the scan quality with the GT-1500. I actually requested a return. Then I decided to play more with the settings. It turns out that to get satisfactory results, one has to tweak the settings a lot. In Saving setting, set the PDF quality to the highest, and turn on Compression if you want to save file size.
Another disappointment is that two more important features are missing: one is to quickly scan and preview the document then crop the area to scan; the other one is to enhance colors of different channels of red, blue, and green. I thought functions like these are pretty basic but they are missing on this machine. Anyways, using the above settings, I am able to get similar scan qualities as with my GT-1500. On the positive side, I like it that I can set up scan workflow and add it as a button on the home screen. Scan resolution could be up to 1200x1200, so it's useful in case I need to super fine details. Printing and copying work as expected, nothing too exciting here. Didn't test the fax function. Who still uses fax these days anyways. No scan preview means I will have to crop the document in Acrobat, and no color enhance mode only adds small inconvenience at times since I only need that occasionally. I've only had it for a few days so I can't really talk about how reliable it will be in the years to come and how good the customer support of Brother is. After thinking carefully about it, I decided to cancel the return and keep it instead. I still have a month to change my mind though, in case it went south!Scans are all crooked. I knew this from reading others' reviews, and don't really need the scans for anything other than reference (so I don't have all of the paper taking up space), but still--there's no excuse for this when it's a known issue. Others have said noted this, but there is a standard fix. Up comes the popup Brother print utility. Click the Advanced tab and then Other Print Options, which results in another popup window. Click OK (remember to click OK, or your new setting won't hold), and the popup window closes. Click OK on the Brother print utility window. Print your job and assess the print density. You can continue adjusting the density until it's where you like it.

It comes with a software in which you have a lot of functions to use. The overall design is boring as Brother has not changed the design for more than a decade. But it works as it is supposed to do. Setup was probably the easiest I've ever had with a printer.
Just plunk it down, connect it to my home network, install the software, and it automatically find the printer and sets it up for you. It supports both print and scanning via network, has email functions, print from mobile devices, etc. Pretty much anything you would ever need. Some of the more complex functions are a little more difficult to setup if you aren't tech savvy, but the basic scanning and printing setup is a breeze. It has full duplex printing and scanning, with an auto feeder for scanning. Having an autofeeder that can scan both sides at a time (and software to skip blank pages!) makes copying and scanning far quicker. I had an alignment issue with the scan at first, but found if I adjusted the side guides, it corrected itself. The software also has an auto-descew function to straighten scans if they went in crooked. Overall super happy with this purchase. Please try again I've had 3 different versions over the past 10 years I just bought this particular one in May and already in August, the automatic paper feed is completely shredding paper, the wi-fi system drops the internet connection all the time, and it will show on the various computer in the house as being off line. Yes they are, although the deskew seems to fix it. The scans are also quite light compared to my Canon MFP and my office scanner.
Even increasing the contrast did not bring the scans up to par. Lastly, this scanner will not scan a number of pictures at once, separate and deskew them. My Canon does and other (more expensive?) Brother MFPs do. But this one does not support it. That is a big ommission and one you have to dig deep to find that out. I found out becasue it wasn't working and searched through Brother's site until I concluded it (Brother does not actually say it but you can guess from what they say). Lastly, this printer is quite a bit noiser than other Brother printers I have had. The quality of text is never great, they always seem to be out of ink (or if you don't print often enough the ink dries up) and the pages often come out wet. Having a laser printer solves all these problems. Also, being able to print from my laptop, phone or tablet is really great. I can even use google print to print from work and have docs waiting when I get home. I would buy this again without hesitation. This printer was super easy to connect to my wireless network and all my devices see it (including on windows and through airprint). Setup was easy, the printer is fast and reliably, and it has worked quickly and properly every time I have tried to use it so far (which for most consumer products isn’t a big deal but for a printer it is extremely unusual). I also use all of its scanning, photocopy, and double-sided printing features all the time without any problem. And paper jams are very rare. I found Brother's tech support page to go through all the troubleshooting and it said that printers over version F would fix this issue. Well I was on version H and it still wasn't working. I contacted tech support from their contacts page and there was no response at all. Finally I plugged it into my kitchen outlet which was only GFCI and after installing all of the printer software did it ask me to upgrade the firmware to version K. If you control the copy job directly from the printer, it works like a vacuum and sucks the papers through. Because of that, it rips the original documents And drags the papers out of line. If you control the photocopy job from Control Centre 4 via the computer, you have a 70 chance to get the job done without ripping the original documents but can still be off line. The Control Centre 4 is user friendly but NOT the control panel from the computer. I am still trying to figure it out.
