Andy M. 4.0 out of 5 stars This printer (actually this print engine, as it is used in several other Brother models) has a lower cost than some other Brother units, but you will make it up over the life of the printer as you buy higher-priced toner and drum units. The toner and drum units for this printer cost more than those for other Brother models, and don't last as long. Consider your printing needs and spend more upfront if you will be printing a lot. As long as you expect this going into the purchase of this printer, it is a great unit. It works as advertised, and Brother has very good drivers under Mac OS X. For the money upfront, you can't beat it. For the future cost of consumables, you may be able to find a better model for your needs.Turns out Amazon must have a depot in Phoenix where I live. My four-year old, monstrously big Canon MFP died, so started looking for a much smaller one, and one that had PC-fax too, not easy to find. After spending hours looking at these, finally came across this Brother. It as all five functions, and all work very well. I do miss the platen to copy or fax, but hey, can't have everything, and that would make it much bigger.

The manuals for setup leave a lot to be desired, but not that hard to figure out. The plastic guides to input paper and the output guides are pretty cheesy, but the rest of the machine seems very solid. The User Guide, for some weird reason, has info on all the functions except the Scan. Nary a word on that, but the manual on the CD does have the info. Strange. There are a load of ways to tweak the printer, and the info in the guide is simple, giving the numbers to key in to make changes. Also, can do a lot on the computer too, which is easier, as the LCD is rather dark and hard to read. My only complaint is that printing or copying, the paper comes out very badly curled up. I am using laser paper, so don't understand that. Leaving the sheets on a flat desk for a long time does not help either. I emailed them, but no reply yet. Have not had it long, but wanted to point out that it is a vast improvement over the old one I had, especially the scanning. That gives a lot of choices on what program to use and what format to save it it. All in all, a good machine for a reasonable price. It is the third MFP I've had, the other two being ink jets. I solved the paper curling by getting a different brand. It is exceptionally fast printing compared to ink jets. In sleep mode it is totally silent. Everything works perfectly in printing, scanning, copying and faxing.Highly recommend it, I think now it is five star.You can't beat it for the price. Using OEM toner cartridges, each copy is less than 1 cent each. It's been a reliable companion for years and have put thousands of pages through it without a problem. This one was purchased by a friend at my recommendation. Unless you need color all the time, this is an economic means of making copies. Always works flawlessly.I bought it after using another Brother product for years. It was easy to connect to my Windows 7 computer and everything worked well on the first try.
I've already used it for sending faxes, scanning documents, printing and copying. Although we use it mostly as a printer. Despite this I find loading it much easier than my years older version that had to be fed paper from a paper tray sticking up out of the back. So far I've had it about a month.Never had a service call or had to fix it in some way. The only function I did not use was to scan. Other than that I used everything else. Would I recommend it. Yes I would in an heartbeat. I still use it but not as often now. I believe I've only changed the ink about three times and I used to use it a lot. (MFC-7220 and MFC-7225N only) Print data is left in the machine’s memory. The USB or Parallel cable was unplugged while the computer was sending the data to the machine. Press Job Cancel. The machine will cancel the job and clear it from the memory. Try to print again. Disconnected The other person or other person’s fax machine stopped the call. Try to send or receive again. Document Jam The document was not inserted or fed properly, or the document scanned from the ADF was too long. See Document jams on page 11-7. You can use the handset to make calls. When you dial a quick-dial number, the LCD shows the name you’ve stored, or if you haven’t stored a name, the fax number you’ve stored. If you pressed Hook to dial the call, pick up the handset when the other party answers. (The speaker works only one way; the other party won’t be able to hear you unless you pick up the handset.) We have it set up with a “distinctive ring” feature so we can have both a voice number and a fax number on the same physical phone line. It has had no problem handling this and it has always been able to tell a fax call from a voice one. We also have an answering machine, PC Modem, cordless phone, and credit card terminal all hooked up to the same physical line as this fax machine and have no conflicts or problems. The footprint is very small which is nice if you’re running out of deskspace. The print quality is OK. We use to have an inkjet based fax machine and it was better. When your comparing prices on these machines, be sure to add the cost of a replacement cartridge to the purchase price of this one (.
)The cartridge that comes with it is only good for about 20-30 pages. I get that much junk fax in a couple of weeks. If you decide to buy this one, get a spare cartridge also. We use this in a home office set up and only get a few of faxes a day. If you have high volume fax needs, this may not be the machine for you. It’s slow and I’m not convinced that it would hold up very long under high-volume situations.The paper holder for the ADF is scrawney. It takes rolls of carbon paper for printing (which I've not had to do - I have another printer) as opposed to an ink cartridge. Next time, I will buy what I want rather then being forced to accept what's out there due to need. I guess it sends ok - No one's called to say anything's wrong but, if it sends too poorly they wouldn't know where to call. Not what I will choose in the future tho. Sorry.It is easy to set up, and it is very reliable. I have had mine for 8 years now, and it still works fine. There are two downsides: 1) the fax cartridges don't last very long if you need to make a few copies and 2) the copy quality is mediocre at best. Then again, that's not really the primary purpose of this machine anyway.
