To receive an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) in Law Enforcement students must complete 38 semester credit hours of approved academic courses and complete the Peace Officer Training Program for a total of 60 semester credits. Due to a limited amount of seating, students should begin the application process for the POTP early in the semester prior to when the POTP is offered. Students that graduate from the Peace Officer Training Program first can complete the AAS in Law Enforcement either on campus or online. The Certificate in Peace Officer Training is a rigorous one semester program that satisfies the training requirements for employment as a peace officer in North Dakota. The Peace Officer Training Program is scheduled as an academy style setting. Students will have physical fitness training every morning and classroom hours will be 9-5 Monday through Friday. There is no physical training involved, however the participant must be able to withstand live fire shooting, external and internal team operations, and movement associated with the environment a law enforcement officer may be involved in. This Breath Analysis Operator Course certifies law enforcement personnel in the operation of the Datamaster and new Datamaster, DMT Infrared Breath Test instrument only. The program presents information on the effects of alcohol on the human body, operational procedures, Vehicle and Traffic Law pertaining to DWI enforcement, and pertinent case law. Students must pass both a written test and an instrument proficiency examination in order to be certified.To be eligible for recertification, currently certified operators must successfully complete a written examination at an authorized testing center prior to the expiration of their current permit. Successful students will receive a Breath Analysis Operator Permit which will expire two years from the date of issuance.The course is designed for experienced in-service officers. The course is the standard officers should possess for mentoring new recruits during their field training component of the Basic Course for Police Officers. Students will receive instruction on the psychology of learning, liability issues, oral communication, lesson planning, range rules, basic fundamentals of shooting, line operations and range commands, scoring techniques, judgmental shooting, and conducting field demonstrations. Each participant is required to demonstrate their understanding of the class material by developing a lesson plan and delivering a 10-minute presentation and a 50-minute presentation. Final student evaluation will be based on the lesson plan, the 50-minute presentation, class participation, and a written exam. Students that successfully complete this program will be certified as firearms instructors by the New York State Bureau for Municipal Police.
