The book claims that it is appropriate for an extended age range but honestly after about fourth grade, I don't think this book has the depth it needs (even with the extension activities.) I do however appreciate their attempt to create a family learning curriculum. I love the easy blending of religion and science (as I believe is should be) and the creative interactive activities (my six year old loves the hanging planet page!) definitely help retention and understanding. The listing did not mention that many pages had been removed.There is an audio cd that comes with the teacher's manual. Here is my review for this curriculum: Though the formatting of the teacher and student books are all black and white, the font is easier to read--both because of its size and style. For each lesson, the headings are bolded and it's easy to read the lesson prep quickly. Each lesson includes sections for preparation (supplies to gather, etc.), vocabulary, a song or poem, activity, notebook, Bible reading, review, and digging deeper activities. For some of the lessons, there is also an evolution stumper. You may or may not want to use this part of the lessons. I am probably going to call them something more along the lines of Creation Time Questions. Most of the supplies for the lessons aren't expensive or unusual, but there are some supplies that you'll need to gather, like rock samples. I'd suggest that you either skim through all of the lessons before you use the curriculum and make a supply list for the year or that you read ahead a few weeks as you go through the year and make sure you have the supplies you'll need. This is a notebooking curriculum, but you'll need a student book for each student. They're very affordable, which is a blessing.
This is not a reproducible curriculum, so you do need to purchase a student book for each student, rather than copying the pages you want for each student from the student book that comes with the teacher's guide. As I read through the lessons, I was pleased with this curriculum. There 36 lessons, so I would suggest a minimum of a year for this curriculum. Some of the lessons have multiple parts, so they will probably take longer. You could spread this curriculum over a year and a half (and then use The Nature Connection for the other 6 months). You could also break it up and use a portion each year along with another science curriculum. This is a curriculum that is best for grades 2nd-7th. That is what the publisher recommends and I agree with that estimate. This curriculum would be a great break from a secular science curriculum if that is what you're using. It would help you point your children to God through creation--which secular science curriculums don't do. What I also like about it is that the lessons touch on a wide variety of science topics. It is as if students are given a taste to whet their appetites to learn more. This is a curriculum I look forward to using with my children. I have chosen to use a secular curriculum because of how great the textbooks are--age appropriate reading text, good comprehension questions, instant activities, and they've been easy to use. So far, the curriculum I use also hasn't delved into evolution or the origin of the world so I haven't had any major issues with it. But, I do want to make sure my children have a deep appreciation for what God has created and for who He is. I look forward to using this curriculum for these reasons. There are little craft projects to go with each lesson, and I especially like the bible verses tied in.
It follows the days of creation, starting with the earth and planets, then some weather, insects, animals, and ends up with the human body.The teacher's guide is quite easy to use. However, the music CD is very disappointing. The lyrics would be great for memorization. Too bad the vocals and music are not at all pleasing to listen to, much less sing, especially for children. My children like to sing and this was something I thought would be very helpful. It may be used alone as a complete one to three-year study or with any other science program by selecting the areas that apply to what is being studied. A relatively small amount of reading is required to help keep complicated concepts at an introductory level while still pursuing scientific observation and analysis. Consequently it can be used in a single grade classroom or with a multi-level homeschool family. Most of the work is done for you. We have done the research and created effective games, experiments, poems, songs, arts and crafts projects, and lap-book-type pages. The notebook pages are designed to help your students become true scientists, carefully observing and investigating God’s creation. In addition, we have placed a strong emphasis on relating science to the Bible and evaluating scientists’ worldviews. You, as the teacher, will have control over the information being taught and the order in which it is presented. For example, the song “Footprints”talks about how we are able to identify the previous presence of various animals by the tell-tale signs they leave behind. Creation serves as the backdrop for science studies that can be easily adapted for multi-level teaching in the home school setting. This one-year program is contained in a teacher’s manual and a student book. The publisher says it can also be used as a supplement to other curriculum if desired, but I doubt many use it that way. The teacher’s manual contains the lessons, written in an easy-to-use format. Each lesson first describes advance preparation required. Next are vocabulary words listed with definitions and origins. Following is the “introduction”—actually the main idea of the lesson—which can be read to students directly from the book. The actual song is on the accompanying professionally-recorded audio CD that comes in an attached envelope in the back of teacher’s manual. (Cassettes are also available.) Because the authors believe in hands-on activities for effective learning, at least one such activity is described in each lesson. Many of the activities utilize student activity pages from the 270-page student book. While a Christian view of science is presented throughout each lesson, a special section called Bible Reading directs students to Scripture for verses related to the subject under study. The creationist viewpoint, including belief in a young earth, is a dominant theme. A fun extra, called “Evolution Stumpers,” provides tidbits of scientific information with which to challenge the theory of evolution. A review section includes questions to pose to your children about each lesson. Since the curriculum is designed for a wide age span, the final section, “Digging Deeper,” offers suggestions for additional study, activities, investigations, reading, reports, etc., which can be used as is appropriate with each student. You are free to make copies for immediate family and classroom use only, although you might prefer to order a separate workbook for each student.
These sheets are often the foundation for investigations or experiments, or they are used for cut-and-paste activities, all of which are essential parts of the curriculum. Students compile their own notebooks as they work through these activities and lessons. Topics covered include creation, the universe, the earth, rocks and minerals, weather, plant kingdom, ecology, insects, spiders, fish, reptiles, birds, mammals, amphibians, animal structures, food chains, animal reproduction, instinct, man, and scientists. None of these topics is covered thoroughly, since that would be impossible within a one-year curriculum. If you examine the list of topics, you can see that life science receives the most attention with earth science filling the remainder. We definitely need to make decisions about what to require from each child, since some material will be too challenging for young students and some not challenging enough for older students. It also requires significant preparation and presentation time. However, this curriculum is one of the best for homeschool families that want a Christian science curriculum for teaching a broad span of grade levels together. Individual lessons can each be covered in a week, though in general there’s plenty of room for doing further exploration on topics.
You could easily spend a whole semester each on The Animal Kingdom, Animal Anatomy, or Man, depending on subtopics you wish to pursue in depth. You may cover the entire book from beginning to end in order, or pick and choose your topics. There’s a list of additional resources in the back of the Teacher Manual, including computer games, books, and videos. The Student workbook consists of “notebook page” designed to be copied (for your own family’s use), completed by the kiddos, and added to their science notebook. Pages are mini-books, charts, word searches, and other pencil activities demonstrating comprehension. Answers and full instructions are provided in the Teacher’s Manual (it’s not possible to do the notebook pages without instructions from the Teacher’s Manual). When they are done, they will have a nice notebook to use as reference and share with friends and family (and the homeschool monitor). The CD contains 23 little ditties. Some are designed to be aids to memory in remembering key points and others are more in praise of God’s creation. Lyrics are included in the Teacher’s Manual. Each lesson consists of several parts (not all lessons have all the parts), including: vocabulary- The Teacher’s Manual includes the words, their definitions and origin. You are encouraged to make flashcards.What did we think? I had the opportunity to try out Considering God’s Creation with 3 kiddos: Peter (grade K), Mary (grade 1), and David (grade 5). I’d say that the optimal grade range for the text (contained in the Teacher’s Manual) is 3-5, though older children will get something out of it if you have them do the “Digging Deeper” activities, many of which involve doing research and writing reports. The readings in the text were pretty much completely over Peter’s head and Mary had some difficulty with them as well.
With a little more preparation, including a trip to the library to pick up some pertinent picture books (the resource list doesn’t really include picture books or easy readers as far as I can tell), and maybe a quick on-line search for free coloring pages to keep his interest, it would have been easier to maintain Peter’s interest. Activities include playing molecules as they heat up and cool down, investigating the water cycle, and witnessing the Coriolis effect by spinning an egg. At the end of the lesson, you put together a weather recipe for your notebook that includes the 5 factors. Possible Digging Deeper activities include researching local climate, watching a couple of Moody Institute of Science videos, drawing a map of ocean currents, and more. The activity was The Gene Pool Game, which demonstrates how offspring inherit their genes from the genes available from the parents. Notebook pages included an animal classification chart and a couple of gene chart activities (determining offspring traits given the traits of the parents). Possible Digging Deeper activities include researching Gregor Mendel, Carolus Linnaeus (developed the system of classification for living things), writing a report on hybrid animals and plants, and more. The activities are nicely varied. The difficulty of the lessons and the amount covered seems to vary somewhat, too. The weather lesson, for instance, is much easier for younger children to understand and participate in, while genetics and classification was a bit too abstract for them to get a grip on. The different components work well together. If I decide to use this for a whole year, I’ll definitely have to pick and choose lessons that will work best with my kiddos, with the oldest adding in plenty of independent research. We did not use the songs. I listened to the songs scheduled ahead of time and simply didn’t much care for them or feel that they added to the lessons. We skipped the Bible readings.
I didn’t see anything there that would conflict with our Catholic faith, and you use your own Bible (references are given, but not the actual readings), I simply didn’t feel it necessary to specifically link these lessons with Scripture. So, you can use this without the Bible readings if you so choose, which you may want to do if you are working on another Bible study. We also skipped the Evolution Stumpers this time. Looking through the book, these are a mixed bag. A few are well done, but many of them are “huh?” moments instead of “aha!” moments, in other words the logic is not totally there. Here’s an example of one: Over the past 100 years, scientists have discovered that the sun is shrinking about 5 feet every hour. If the sun had existed 20 million year ago (the length of time evolutionists say is needed for animals to have evolved from the “primeval soup”), the sun would have had to be so large that its surface would have touched the earth. What effect would that have had on the earth. Would there be an earth at all. First, the sun’s shrinkage is stated as an accepted fact. If you do a quick search online, you’ll find that there is no consensus in the scientific community on whether the sun if in fact shrinking at all, let alone 5 feet every hour. That doesn’t mean that it’s not true, only that it’s not verified, in fact a lot of respected scientists have come to a lot of different and contrary conclusions from the same data (further proof that seeing is not always believing). Second, one of the (many) problems with Darwin’s special theory of evolution is that he takes his observations of adaptation, and attempts to project them back into the unobservable past and extrapolate what came before. This assumes that since evolution is happening now, it must needs have been happening from the beginning, in the same way, and in the same rate. There’s absolutely nothing to back that assumption up.
There’s also nothing to back up the assumption that if the sun is shrinking about 5 feet an hour now, that it was shrinking 5 feet an hour 100 years ago, 1000 years ago, or 20,000,000 years ago. This is a logical fallacy. If you want to combat someone else’s argument, don’t make the same kind of logical errors they make. But not all the Evolution Stumpers are like this, there is some food for thought here. The very first one points out that it takes faith to believe in evolution, just as it takes faith to believe in God, and that faith in the “Big Bang” is as much a religion as Christianity is. I absolutely agree. So let me tell you what I really like about Considering God’s Creation: It’s very easy to pick and choose what parts of the curriculum you want to use. You can use everything as written, or use it as a loose outline for organizing your studies, adding rabbit trails as you like and using whatever other resources you happen to have available. Considering God’s Creation does not pretend to be an exhaustive treatment of natural science, it’s more of a jumping off point. There’s seeds here for years of fruitful study. The authors encourage you to teach your child to use their brains and their faith to put everything they read to the test, rather than blindly accepting everything they read. Overall, it’s a nice compact resource to have on hand with plenty of learning activities for rainy days and food for thought. So I admit that I’ve not used Considering God’s Creation as it is designed, but I’ve loved having it on my shelf as a resource for supplementing science and nature studies. Considering God’s Creation is written for 2nd through 6th grades and is flexible enough for teaching a group of children in various grades. Perfect for a Charlotte Mason styled homeschooler who wants no formal science before 7th grade, this program is very gentle and provides a brief introduction to many areas of science: creation, the universe, weather, rocks, plants, animals, ecology, and human body. The Student Book The student book has almost 200 perforated pages that can be reproduced within a family. These make up the notebooking component of Considering God’s Creation. Some are strict pages with coloring or matching, but many are cut and paste paper activities or minibooks. One of my favorite parts of the student book are the detective pages. These are one page worksheets that can be filled in with details; there are boxes to tick and places to draw diagrams. Detective Pages offer a concrete framework for careful observation and documentation, so they are great for science notebooks or for nature journals. The student book wisely includes duplicates of the detective pages because you will want to use them many times in your scientific observations. The Teacher’s Manual Considering God’s Creation is a very “open and go” curriculum thanks to the teacher’s manual; any needed preparation is clearly outlined at the beginning of the teacher notes. Each lesson includes Bible references to connect the science to God’s word.
There are suggested experiments or activities, a fully scripted lesson (with answers to all the questions), a notebooking activity taken from the student book, evolution stumpers, and resources for further study. The Audio CD The audio CD has songs to help you learn the science facts. The lyrics are included in both the student and teacher’s books. My Own Evaluation The notebooking aspect of the program is easy to adapt to either science notebooking, nature journaling, or even lapbooking. As a downside, some of the printable papercrafts and minibooks are tiny, with lots of information crammed on very small pieces of paper. You may want to enlarge some of the reproducibles or adapt their use. For example, the minute flaps that are to be glued together could be more easily stapled. Another option that we used was to print the diagrams and illustrations and affix them onto blank minibooks we’d already created. (You can see an example of this method with the shutterfold about eyes pictured above.) The style is a bit coarse; Considering God’s Creation is not as visually polished as an Evan Moor or a Scholastic book. But the Christian emphasis in the lessons and the comprehensive nature of the book make up for it. Personally, I find the songs in the program very annoying, so the CD stayed safely in its envelope in the back of my teacher’s manual.
