The touch pad took a little while to get used to using, however I just lowered the sensitivity and it works great. The sound quality is very good albeit the headphones that come with the unit are pretty much useless. I initially was leaning more towards the 4th generation iPod, but after some research I ended up choosing the Nomad based primarily upon battery life and not being locked into Apple's software. It has twice (24hrs) the battery life of the iPod(12hrs), has the ability to play WMA files, transfers via USB 2.0, and is less expensive. It doesn't come with a remote, but you can pick one up on Creative's website. You don't have to look very far to find a better unit at a less expensive price.There are a few things to consider before buying one that I think are important to consider. I've never had to reset a portable MP3 player, including my previous Zen Extra. I was about to find out why the reset hole was there as I began to convert and load my CD collection onto my Touch. As I transferred the first 50 CDs I must have used the reset function four or five times. Every CD you rip and convert is added to that database in order to assist in organizing and synchronizing files on your computer and the Zen Touch. Unfortunately it doesn't take much to corrupt the database thus necessitating reset. Rebuilding it is a major headache. When the database does become corrupted the Media Player will not start and you will have to restart your computer, reset the database, and rebuild your albums. The software seems very brittle and clunky. If you plan on jogging or taking brisk walks with your player, you might consider another more robust unit. The manual recommends against any sudden jarring moves that may occur while jogging or running. Also, the headphone jack strikes me as being rather flimsy and protrudes at an odd angle from the top of the player.
I could see it getting damaged rather easily if the Zen Touch is allowed to bounce around in a briefcase or purse with the headphones plugged in. Another feature the Zen Touch has that my previous Zen Extra does not is the button lock switch that keeps the unit from accidentally being switched on or having your settings inadvertently changed. It's really mandatory to use while listening to music, since merely sliding the unit back into its case can screw up your listening experience if the controls are not locked. The case must be removed to make any adjustments. I think I could have designed a better case. Extended battery life is a plus, but in the real world I'm quite sure nobody is going to get 24 hours as advertised. Just turning the unit off and on a few times a day or accessing the controls frequently really cuts back on battery life. Still, it is a big improvement over the Zen Extra. The Zen Touch is a good buy if you are looking to save some money over an iPod of similar storage size. It's a little bigger and not quite as refined as the iPod, but it is still a contender.
