Becket 5.0 out of 5 stars I write fiction about sailing ships. I'm too old to book acruise on the Picton Castle so I research. Here's the drill. Most late 18th, 19th Century manuals on seamanship were written to prepare young men to be ship's officers.

These manuals assume a knowledge of seamanship. The antique rhetoric and vocabulary are very challenging. This manual lays the foundation for understanding how square riggers were sailed.Learn about its 23 sails, 190 lines, and speeds up to 17 knots under sail. Packed full of information and detailed drawings to begin one's learning of the wonderful world of sailing on a tall ship. An excellent reference guide to keep handy. The Coast Guard is keeping traditional sailing and training alive with this excellent ship and its seamanship book.Seanmanship by Harland is in far greater depth, but one must wade through historical data for the later rigging advances that have become our last, most recent view of Square Rigger seamanship. If you're trying to learn the basics of square rigged ships, you can't find a better guide. Eagle Seamanship contains a wealth of information on sail handling, traditional rigging, and the workings of the Coast Guard's training vessel. There is information in this book that every sailor should absolutely be aware of.The condition was practically new, better than expected. The information appears to be exactly what I was anticipating to study. Looking forward to Sailing in EAGLE. Very Satisfied. There seems to be very little on the practicalities of operating old boat - most books are historical or aimed at model boat builders. Most explanations though use another 4 words you've never heard of, but the glossary is excellent, and worth buying the book for. It is very specifically aimed at the Eagle, and therefore less good for general use on other old boats; however, as (I think) the Eagle is as complex as it gets, you should find much of use. It is a bit brief - the small format makes diagrams a bit sketchy, and the explanations of procedures are hardly foolproof. An expanded reference version with this as the pocket guide (as it is intended to be) would be great.

My only caveat is that the diagrams are obviously computer-generated, and as a result some of them are not quite as good as those in previous editions. The 13-digit and 10-digit formats both work. Becket 5.0 out of 5 stars Most period era manuals on the subject are made complex by antique English and an emphasis on officer preparation. Other books on the ships themselves were written for model makers. While Eagle Seamanship does not cover everything involved with a large square rigged craft built to sail world wide without auxiliary power, it is the first book I'd recommend you read on the subject. It will do an amazing job of preparing you to go further forward in this area of seamanship. For that reason, I recommend it as your first square rigged seamanship manual. This is beyond a doubt the best resource book on how to sail a Tall Ship.Using it for the Picton Castle World Voyage 7.That's what I needed.Buy two copies.

If you simply want to expand your knowledge of seamanship-this book will give you some good ideas and is worth the price. I was particularly impressed with the emphasis on commands, the descriptions of the chain of command-all principals that should be applied to any vessel with a crew. Back Cover: Written for cadets serving on the U.S. Coast Guard's famous training barque, Eagle, and use by Tall Ship sailors around the world, this handy, pocket-sized manual tells seamen all they need to know to sail a square rigger. This new edition, the first to appear in ten years, is easier than ever to follow, and its simple step-by-step explanations of commands and procedures help the reader through every important sailing maneuver. The wealth of knowledge and experience this guide draws upon is without parallel. Index: 1. Eagle History 2. Compartmentation and Standing Rigging 3. Sails and Running Rigging 4. Setting, Dousing, and Furling Sail 5. Trimming Sail 6. Working the Ship 7. Shipboard Emergencies 8. Deck Seamanship Glossary Reviewer's Comments: I picked up this book before there were any reviews and had no clue it was a US Coast Guard Manual for sailing this specific boat. So I was a little disappointed at first. I was only slightly interested in the interior arrangements of the cabins. BUT. After digging into it, I found lots of cool stuff that could apply to handling any sailing vessel. Like a good way to scandalize (depower) a staysail when you don't have a furler. The single piece of information I was most interested in was the layout of the running rigging at the pin rails. For a sailor to know the ropes-this information must be committed to memory. I enjoyed the book, and reread in periodically to help keep the terminology fresh. Now, I'm trying to figure out how to wrangle a passage on the Eagle-or at least a tour. This books is a wonderful intorduction to get you started while onboard this beautiful Square-Rigger.

It takes you through the lines and pinrail, that you need to know to work the sails. It doesn't give you sufficient navigation information, so you'd learn that as you go. After reading the book and putting what I learned into action, I am forever hooked on sailing ships and the sea. If your interested in sailing ships or one of America's naval treasures, I encourage you to read this book. This is essential if you are truly to come to understand square rig sailing and attain a good level of competence.Buying and reading it again brings back the memory of sailing on this wonderful vessel and trying to learn and remember all the lore and details that she represents. There are other books on square rigged seamanship and I have many of them, but I prefer this one because it deals with one single ship, and deals with every manoeuvre and every detail, precisely and well. By seeing exactly how things are done on Eagle it is easy to extrapolate to other ships. The other books try to describe so many different varieties of equipment and variations in handling that in the end you are left in confusion. The illustrations are not artistic but they show in an elegant and precise way exactly what the author is trying to explain: how a large square rigged ship is run. If you have sailed on Eagle you will be already familiar with this book. If not, buy it, read it and marvel at how such a complex thing can be understood, controlled and handled by mere humans. On the way you will learn more about square rig and ship handling than you would from any flashier or heavier tome. The principles are very transferable to my own experience on a two masted English Brig. It is well written and simply illustrated. Good value. A more generic version would have been ideal, hence only 4 stars.Umfangreich bebildert (Skizzen) und gut beschrieben. That's how long it lasts from USA to Europe with all the customs procedures.
The book is an operation manual for square riggers, and since the principle is always the same, it's also good for better understanding of the handling of other square rigged ships. Seems to be the only available book of this kind, and I don't know why the re-print of this sold-out book, which already has an ISBN number and is scheduled to arrive in 2011, still has not been printed. I bought it for the Clipper Stad Amsterdam. Each year, over 100,000 guests tour Eagle 's decks; countless others follow her journeys throughout the world on her website and facebook page.
