More than half of the components of this kit are loose and require a working knowledge of electronics notation (for instance decoding resistor values and transistors designations) There are several addendum to the owners manual that make note of substitutions for ICs and Transistors so do be sure to keep them from falling out of the manual when opening the box. The included breadboard is well constructed and the 300 projects will give an advanced understanding of electronics. Projects are fun and interesting and build on one another. I have 5 children and found that my 10 year old was more interested in simpler kits. This is better suited for teens.

The manual starts out with step-by-step instructions for the first 6 projects and then moves to simple and clear schematics and wiring diagrams. These can be tedious if you are not able to read schematics yet because the wiring diagrams are literally hand drawn. (whereas the schematics are plotter drawn) There is months of fun in this kit and there is enough learning to branch off and build your own things. The breadboard and the components alone are worth more than the price of this kit.Were you to just go out and get a breadboard and a parts kit, you might save some money, but probably not a lot. All told, though, I am learning, although I do recommend getting a basic electronics book as well to fill in some gaps. If you want to buy a kit like this, though, the fact that this one includes a small breadboard makes it a good choice for graduating to larger projects eventually. Lots of very small parts, dodgy labelling of those parts, and the need for a very deft touch to install them make this not really suitable for young people, unless it is with some degree of supervision. Teens or adept tweens should be ok with it, though.Once it arrived, we found that inside the box was the large white main breadboard and integrated components (like antenna, variable resistor, DPDT, LEDs, etc.), a smaller box with many different items (lengths of wire, the resistors, capacitors, integrated circuits, diodes, etc.), a fairly thick manual and two pages which offered corrections that did not make it into the manual. Over the last nine months we have been building both custom circuits of our own design and also following along from the manual. The manual begins with extremely simple circuits like getting a light bulb to light (in this case, a LED) and then moves on to resistors in series and parallel, simple charging circuits with capacitors, etc.

There are also many fun circuits that are great learning experiences for kids, like assembling an AM radio, making weird sound machines and motion detectors. This kit is also appropriate for introducing electrical circuits to highly gifted children as early as age 6 or 7, gifted children around age 8 or 9 and children of normal intelligence around perhaps, age 11 or 12. For example, in the manual, you do get to build a simple charging circuit with a capacitor but the manual only gives a few sentences as to how the capacitor stores and releases charge. They do not explain anything in detail about how a time constant is derived or the importance of differential equations and complex variables to circuit behavior. So the reader is not exposed to the basic fundamental physical and mathematical relations that are important to circuit construction. But for the audience this product is aimed at, and for the purpose of interesting intelligent children in learning something about electronics, it is only a minor omission. Overall, I like this kit and it would cost a great deal more to assemble piecemeal all the components that Elenco includes in this kit. Several of the components are a little bit on the cheap end but not to the detriment of reliability. Many of the circuits elicit a learning response from him and he seems to enjoy trying to figure out why certain circuits behave as they do. The only real items that would enrich this kit, would be an aforementioned detailed explanation text and a multi-meter (which allows you to view in real time voltages, resistance and current). So far, pretty happy and I would rate this kit as 4.5 out of 5 stars.It takes a lot of concentration to understand how the projects work. It's easy enough to follow the simpler schematics and work your way up. BEWARE!!!! THE WHITE WIRES CONSISTENTLY BREAK IN MY BREADBOARD - I don't use any of the white wires anymore. It's a shame, but totally able to work around it.

The receiving holes in the board are not fully formed. When you try to push the wire into the board, the wires bend hopelessly against the resistance of the poorly formed holes in the board making it impossible to complete even the easiest of projects. And that's me trying - not my kid. This could have been a great item and an awesome learning experience for my daughter if only they made the wires thick enough or the holes easy enough to penetrate. Now my daughter and I have wasted an afternoon and are both frustrated. That night after school, we built an AM radio and the wireless microphone. Too bad one must disassemble one project to build another. The organization, color coding and numbering is wonderful, and encourages putting all pieces back into their plastic wells before beginning the next project. This 76 year old ham radio operator remembers from the 1950s when we stripped down old radios for their components and took days - weeks - to build a radio from the ARRL handbook or Popular Electronics. She is the only one in her school to have one. Any child that has an edge on electronics at this young age can go far in life. Great for training my son. However he knows absolutely nothing about how everything works so we have to teach him the parts basics. What a resistor is and what it does etc. Soon I sent him several parts and kits and i have an exact copy of what he has so we can work together. First a light emitting diode a resistors and some power. We Wil get into mathematics later. Good to have fun making things fun while learning. Great for teen or even adult who wants to learn and be able to do, not just read a book. Excellent class room style unit to create lab circuits that work, entertain, and more importantly, TEACH. These have cheap breadboard and tiny micro parts. I'd return for refund it was such disappointment.
