Where did you get those modular 8pin cables, if your PSU doesn't have ports for them? Low power models only needed a 1x 6pin. Some middling models will use 1x 8pin or 2x 6pin as it's the same thing. Psus are totally separate. Has nothing to do with what component is on the other end. Only thing that matters is matching up the modular connectors. Almost all modular units will have some sort of label on the psu itself, can be pcie, vga, Sata, whatever. If you bought a brand new psu, it should have at least 1x wire for every modular connection. Pin count on one end is irrelevant to the pin count on the other. What you won't get, barring any cosmic accident, is a brand new unit with 2x 8pin psu Vga wires with a psu that has 2x 6pin connections on the psu side. So either the wires are wrong, because it's a used unit, a cosmic accident put the wrong wires in a brand new box, or you are looking at either the connections wrong or have the cables backwards or something else to that affect. SkyNetRising: The Enermax is an ELT400AWT-ECO II. It's a discontinued line on their website. Re the missing cables for that PS, I've no idea where I got it. It might have been redundant following a customer's upgrade. As I said, I've been out of mainstream PC building for 5-6 years. Re the two 8pin to 6pin cables, they probably came with the EVGA Supernova PS that's in my main PC. Anyway, it's just occurred to me that if I can't 'doctor' the 8pin end of the EVGA cables, I could maybe cut the 8pin plug off, cut the old cables off the failed PS, and join them up. OK, it's not a great solution, and the Enermax is underpowered compared to the broken AcBel, but I have no way of getting decent replacement parts until next week. It you connect them wrong, you'll kill your hardware - motherboard and graphics card. All it takes is 1 pin in the wrong slot and you just sent 12v into ground on the gpu, fried gpu or you sent ground into 12v on the gpu which then in order to work pulls maximum power through the motherboard, fries the motherboard and thats if the backlash OC 2x 12v at the gpu doesn't travel back to the ground at the psu and smoke it too. Modular connections are proprietary for a reason, that includes why the actual connector has different shaped pins, some are square, some are 'D' shaped. Just answered another post, kid took some Corsair 8pin pcie, didn't fit, so he shaved the square pins down to D just to make it fit, and now can't understand why smoke is pouring out the back of the psu. It seems to work OK - i.e., on the bench without a GFX card (mobo has VGA). The CPU fan runs and the SSD drive seems to power on. So maybe I'll just run the monitor from a VGA cable and make do until I can get a new PSU delivered.
