Mike Wolff 3.0 out of 5 stars I figured it would be something different than I normally read. And it was. Unfortunately, it wasn’t as interesting as I hoped. Sure, I don’t begrudge someone building up their world in a side-book like this. The author actually put a lot of effort into that. The concept is well thought out, but the delivery was lacking. There are actually two companion books; one about Orcs and one about Dwarves, but I could not find anything else about this world he’s built. There wasn’t anything different for me in this book. Elves are aloof. Dwarves like to drink and love money. Orcs are savages and humans are looked down upon. I’ve read that before. It read a lot like a text book. At the end of the book, not including the glossary, was actually very interesting. Patrick tells the tale of a glorious battle, which nearly ended the aelfir (Elves). That was good reading. If he would have had more of that in this book, I’d have liked it more. Unfortunatley, I can only give this book a 2.75 of 5 Stars (rounds to 3). Not that it’s badly written, just that it wasn’t very interesting. Please try again. Please try again. Please try again. Please try your request again later.

I love lore in books, in my own books I like to include things about history or mythology that doesn't directly effect or influence the story. But in E.W.F.M the history and myths are so closely to the tactics and equipment that unless you're able to remember all of the words and languages it cane become confusing what is been spoken about after it's initial introduction. As for characters there isn't really anything to write about.

The main voice of the manual is someone whom I can't tell you anything about, despite how many times I went back and re-read it. It might have been a deliberate choice of the author but her words way of speaking (or in this case writing) is a chore to try and connect with, at least for me. I understand that while it is a fantasy book it's meant to read like a textbook, but even then it becomes a textbook we were required to read for University rather than book we wanted to read for fun whilst learning. As for good points, if you do love Elves or heavy lore based work then this is most certainly something you could pick up and enjoy. I enjoyed how it had such similarities to Asian culture and history, I really got a big Samurai vibe when reading about how the Elves manage their society, their weapons, even how they manage their chain of command on the battlefield. I do enjoy how Den Patrick is able to use real-world cultures and societies for the basis of these high-fantasy races and their ways of life. I was tired of cookie cutter romance novels and paranormal hasn't caught my fancy in a while now. So when I saw this little beauty sitting in the YA section, I figured what the hell lets give it a go. So why 3 stars? It was ok, not great but ok. This is one of those books used to pass time for when another one comes along. As it turns out it was interesting. I found myself wanting to be an el I was tired of cookie cutter romance novels and paranormal hasn't caught my fancy in a while now. I found myself wanting to be an elf and march off to battle. It felt like I was actually studying up on the enemy to overthrow them. Easy read, interesting, and short. Give it a go, who knows, there might come a day when a magic portal will open up and pull you into the Shire. And you know what?

That is awesome Pros: worldbuilding is solid, with a rich explanation of the aelfir customs and practices - footnotes provide entertaining trivia and develop the writer's personality - the blatant contempt of elves is pretty funny Cons: for a text on war, it is quite short - the text is only worldbuilding; there is little in the way of an actual story Alright, I want to start this review by noting that The The premise intrigued me, and I always find myself overcome with curiosity when it comes to the worldbuilding process. Not only did I enjoy it, but it motivated me to seek out the other two books in the series. The Aelfir Art of War is a comprehensive guide to the Elven military, from different units, to guides on terrain, to weapons and armour, and even a historical account from a significant battle. Whilst the Elven military is the main focus here, the text actually serves to document other forms of Elvenculture as well, including proper etiquette, magic, and common sport. War is simply a framework that Den Patrick used to describe the Elven race, and he does an effective job of describing these long-lived and contemptuous beings. And then there are the footnotes. The Aelfir Art of War is actually translated from Elvish script by a human who spends a year in their midst. It just so happens, as per the age-old fantasy trope, that humans are at the bottom of the food chain, when compared with the other fantasy races that inhabit the land. The Elves happen to hold humans in contempt, looking down on them with scorn. The translator is constantly the butt of all jokes, which is expressed in the footnotes as he tries to clarify expressions or aspects of culture. There are moments when the translator explains that Elves would feign shock when he awoke each morning, remarking with mock surprise that he hadn't expired yet. Or take bets on whether or not he could translate what they were saying before he keeled over.

The footnotes are what make this book great; they expand on the Elven culture considerably, provide fun trivia and give the text plenty of flavour. This is far from non-fiction reference material; the Aelfir Art of War was designed with an entertaining rather than informative purpose, which was what made it such a fun read. Great as this text was, there were a few drawbacks. For starters, I couldn't help but notice that for a complete text on the art of war, it was actually quite short. Granted, this is not exactly for training the average reader in the Elven military, but the books in this series are noticeably short. This is only a minor flaw, however; the text says all that it needs to, and goes into plenty of detail without bringing itself down with tedious descriptions. This brings me to its second shortcoming; the books in this series are just worldbuilding, lacking an original story to go with it. There is a historical account of a major Aelfir battle at the end, but I consider this Worldbuilding rather than an actual story, since it seems to serve the purpose of giving the reader an example of Aelfir war in action. All in all, everything I have described in the above paragraph is just minor nitpicking. I loved the world and the people that were created within this piece, and I'm looking forward to the other war manuals. I know I mentioned that the books lack story, but they seem to have hints of a narrative going on through the footnotes as Venghaus complains about the blatant racism of the Elves. Den Patrick, if you're reading this, I highly advise you put this world to good use; you have created some vivid and memorable characters, and any such work set in Naer Evain would already have the world set out for the reader. Now, enough dithering. I must finish reading the other war manuals and review them here as well. The lack of reviews on Goodreads surprised and even shocked me a little, so it's time to add to the statistics.

As usual, the author Den Patrick has spent a lot of time building this world, with its customs, insights, characters, beliefs, stories and battles. Thankfully because of Patrick’s writing style and humour this is an easy read. It could have been a slog, but Patrick manages to make this manual lively and interesting. As the synopsis states, it will suit war-gamers and role-players, but also (I believe) fans of the fantasy genre as well. Thanks to Peter Jackson and the release of a few certain hobbit-based films, this should attract quite a following. Even the casual fan will find these books accessible and user-friendly. I appreciated what the book was trying to achieve, thoroughly enjoying its stories and humour. Elves War Fighting Manual by Den Patrick Published 2013 by Gollancz Why not be the first.
