I hope Microsoft does not get rid of Excel, or change it too much in it’s upgrades, cuz I feel pretty computer savvy with all the Excel knowledge I learned from this book and the accompanying books and pamphlets I purchased.However, like most users, I really hadn't scratched the surface of its capabilities. A lot of what I learned was by trial and error or simply by accident. Oddly, our company uses Office 2003 but has made Office 2007 available for home use through Microsoft at a ridiculous discount. So ridiculous that I simply couldn't pass it up. I needed some help with Excel 2007 so decided to try the Missing Manual series again. They won't keep you up nights waiting for a surprise ending, but they won't put you to sleep either. The writing is quite conversational with a bit of humor thrown in. While that's all well and good, it's the content that's important and there's plenty of that. If you need a kick start as an Excel beginner or are stuck trying to work out complicated formulas, this is the book to get.I didn't really want to take the time (or spend the money) to take a course on this program, so when I found this book on Amazon, I thought I would give it a try. So far I REALLY LIKE IT. It's set up so you can go directly to the section that shows you how to do a specific task and let me tell you it takes you step by step through the task with ease. Well written, easy to follow and great diagrams of what you see on the computer screen. If you want to unlock the features of Excel 2007, you NEED this book. And they offer a book for most all of the Microsoft Office programs (I ordered one for Word and PowerPoint as well, and love them all). Well worth the money and a great tool to have near your computer!The descriptions are written in a clear conversational tone, and the examples are easy to follow.

I use Excel for basic list and schedule making, to type notes for college, to calculate statistics for my tennis team, and for different finance calculations and reports at work. I have the manuals for both Excel 2003 and 2007, and the manuals are not interchangeable for the two versions. Whichever version of Excel you use, whether you want to look up basic how-to's, do complicated computations, or get into the bells and whistles, I would recommend the Missing Manual.It seemed to be just what I wanted. The book covers an abundent amount of information relevant to using Excel 2007. I decided to buy it to reinforce my existing knowledge, gained from other Excel 2007 books. One of the first books I used was Mike Smart's Expert book and the later chapters are quite difficult to understand. This book is well written and relevant to my studies. I wanted the book quickly as I am taking a Microsoft Specialist Exam in Excel 2007 in a few weeks time. I received the text in a few minutes on my kindle. I think this is a tremendous benefit, not having to receive the post. I have missed postal deliveries so many times, also by receiving the text on the kindle there are no problems with packaging. Overall a highly recommended book.I can definitely recommend this book. Regards LENOn top of that this was rated Used-Good Condition which I find far understated, this book is in excellent condition the only thing I can see is up against a new manual the cover is slightly faded, inside it is like new. For me - brilliant.As usual, corporate environments are slower to transition to the latest versions of Microsoft Office, and this holds true for Excel as well. Furthermore, the Ribbon feature introduced in Excel 2007 carries forward into Office 2010, so if you learn this version you'll be better prepared to use other Ribbon-based versions of Office.
The author of this book (Matthew MacDonald) has also written a Missing Manual book for Excel 2010 which you might want to check out if that version of Excel is more relevant to you. So, how well is this book written. In my view it's excellent, for 3 main reasons: 1) It's easy to read. As the author points out on the back jacket, many computer manuals read like dry catalogs of information. Not so with this one. The entire book (or at least the 15 or so sections I've read) are written in a conversational style that never sounds forced or professorial. 2) It's relevant. Just about every Excel function and operation - from beginner all the way through to advanced level - is covered here. Regardless of your experience level, this will be your go-to resource. 3) Online integration. When I first received the book, I was alarmed: There's no CD. Flipping to the back of the book, I soon discovered that all of the examples created in the book (there are over 150) can be downloaded - for FREE - from the Missing Manuals website. The total download size is just over 3 MB and includes all of the examples the author uses in the book. I have found this to be extremely useful as I have neither the time nor the inclination to re-create dozens of 50 to 100-row Excel Spreadsheets simply for the benefit of my own learning. Fortunately for all of us, Mr. MacDonald has done so, and in so doing, as added tremendous value to this book. So is this worth buying. Well, it depends. If you use Excel regularly (for example, as part of your job) then absolutely, yes. The sheer variety of topics covered in the book alone makes it worth buying. If, on the other hand, you use Excel only rarely, then perhaps not. This is a manual of sorts, after all, and if you only use Excel occaisionally then you may be better off using free online resources and Excel's built-in online Help.
For the rest of us though - for students, teachers, and those like myself who work as Excel specialists - Excel 2007: The Missing Manual is a reference like no other. The author's ease in presenting complex topics, the range of topics covered, and the availability of all the sample Excel spreadsheets used in the book, make this book a must buy. Please try again later.It is one of the few EXCEL texts on my shelf.I have not been disappointed by this text yet.Pivot tables are an amazingly powerful tool that allows you to turn the data around (pivot even) and look at it from another point of view. It's also amazing that a high percentage of books on Excel simply ignore pivot tables altogether, or perhaps give them half a page. This book has an entire chapter on pivot tables. Furthermore, if you read the Microsoft help screens on pivot tables you get 113 topics to read. In this book the description of pivot tables explains what they are, shows you some examples to illustrate what can be done, and then leads you through using them. This is truly what the manual should have shown, if of course there was a manual that came with Excel. The next thing I look for is XML. This is really the big thing that makes Excel 2003 a new edition of Excel.
Sure enough, a chapter on XML as well. (Except for this section and a few very minor points, you can use the manual for earlier versions of Excel.) But suppose you are not up to guru level and wanting to know about pivot tables and XML. Well, the book starts off with Creating a Basic Worksheet and goes on from there. In summary, here is everything you need to know about Excel from the very basic steps to just as far as you want to go.After flipping through many a Excel book, I finally through the dart and picked The Missing Manual. The Missing Manual by Matthew MacDonald is a wonderful instructional piece. Written in a manner that does not put a person to sleep nor so techy that tears just fill your eyes trying to hold back the pain whilst reading it, because you tell yourself this is good for you. I find myself going to the Missing Manual all the time, for things that I never knew how to do, and to remind me of things I did once a long time ago and cannot recall. This book is a great resource for the newbie to intermediate.But for Excel, Microsoft does offer comprehensive hardcopy documentation. This book is really one of a numerous set of third party offerings that try to improve on Microsoft. The strongest argument for this book is that it appears to combine a comprehensive description of Excel with a conciseness of that explanation. In other words, it really doesn't belong in the Missing Manual series, but rather in O'Reilly's regular and long running series of texts, that share these properties. You know, the books with the purple covers. Granted, the book is bulky. But that reflects over a decade of Excel being continually refined and added to. The conciseness of the explanations means typically some prior exposure to spreadsheets in general, and Excel in particular, would greatly aid your understanding.
It's a balanced blend of basic and advanced information that has a gentle learning curve that will take you all the way from creating your first spreadsheet through the basics of macro development. The book is organized into eight parts, though the first four make up the majority of the book. Part one covers the basics of editing, files, printing, saving. Part two is all about formula creation. Part three is about templates and lists. Part four is about charting and graphics. After that it's into networking, macros, and more advanced topics. The writing is excellent and the use of screenshots is effective and not overwhelming as with other books. A superb walkthrough of the fundamentals of Excel.Seems to me to cover just about all aspects of Excel that one could desire.
