However, for small setups such as that of a DJ, they remain the board of choice for their simple to use interface and relative flexibility. Preset boards generally control only conventional lights; though some advanced hybrid consoles can be patched to operate intelligent lights in a round-about way by setting the control channels of the light to channels the preset board can control. However, this is not recommended since it is a cumbersome process.This type of controller has almost completely replaced preset consoles as controllers of choice. Memory consoles are preferable in productions where scenes do not change from show to show, such as a theatre production, because scenes are designed and digitally recorded, so there is less room for human error, and less time between lighting cues is required to produce the same result. They also allow for lighting cues to contain larger channel counts due to the same time savings gained from not physically moving individual channel faders.The console may also have provision to operate in analog to a manual desk for programming scenes or live control. On more advanced consoles, faders can be used to control effects, chases (sequences of cues), and moving light effects (if the console can control moving lights).As well as being capable of controlling ordinary luminares via dimmers, they provide additional controls for intelligent fixtures. The fixture working “mostly right”, or has some control but not all functions of the light work correctly. To make things worse, the “DMX” indicator light on the back of many lights isn’t really helpful either. While it’s a sign that there is some sort of DMX-like signal present, it can be on when there is not good data or can be off when there is good data! If your console has an “output” screen that you can view, pop that up and check it as well. Some modes can be very similar and cause you to believe that the fixture was working and then started “acting up”, but the truth is, it was never fully right! This will show me immediately which lights are responding and which ones aren’t. It also gives me a quick chance to check that the lights are in the correct addresses and placed in the proper places. If it doesn’t, re-verify the mode and address settings, then skip to the next section of this article! The next thing to do is to re-connect all the cables and see if the problem stays away. As we talked about in “How to Wire DMX”, it’s a good habit to limit each run of DMX to around 16 fixtures so that your signal is nice and strong! So, why don’t I mention them often here? What we have found is that while they do sometimes solve the problem, they also can cause other problems.Here’s my take: you can try using a terminator when you have a DMX problem. I switched cables and the problem persists. Otherwise Im pleased with my investment. This sounds like a DMX signal strength issue, which can happen when you use mic cable instead of proper DMX cable. Should it have still worked with those cables The 4 SGM dimmers have 30 fixtures mainly PCs and PARs plus some old Profiles. I run a chain of dmx cables from the 1st Led through the last cheap dimmer and terminate this with a classic XLR terminator. Usually i use an ENNTEC dmx-usb adapter from a laptop running QLCplus to play my scenes. Now the pblm: Without any obvious reason and not in regular time, a flicker to all lights begins that only stops if i unplug the dmx from the ENNTEC and leave it for some minutes. After that if I plug it again there is a chance to start flicker again after some minutes or be lucky and finish the show. This is happening for about 3 months now and I’ve tried many things.I’d suggest starting with inserting a DMX splitter right after the console (before any lights): Reference the manual of your specific console to see what it is! I have encountered a fairly strange and (i think) rare problem with an old DMX console (Coef MasterShow512) that i bought second hand from someone.
I want to mention that i know how to use DMX, i know the functions of the lighting console and how to patch faders to certain channels an how to address the lights,i have DMX cables an the lights are functioning properly, so from what i see it seems a software or hardware problem with the console. I opened the console and i saw that when all the top plate screws were off and the console top plate was loosy the faders started behaving worse (changing values all over the place) and as i pushed on to the top plate (as if it was fastened with screws) it seemed it went back to the (more chill) state of ”some certain faders changing the value of themselves and the next to them (but not all of them)”. Random flickering across run of daisy chain PARs. Hears the scope. Equipment: 11 ea Pro Par Hex 12 LED, 3 ADJ Par Z100 5k spots and ADJ Operator controller. We replace the old lighting (PARs and Ellipsoidal) all white halogens with the equipment above.But lately it has started and we had none of the fixtures on. We unplug the DMX from back of controller and unplug the power to the controller and it clears up. Again after about a couple of weeks it starts up flickering. This time we tripped off the breaker assign to the run of lights thinking that this would reset the circuitries’ within the fixtures. Well for about a month we had no problems. Oh prior to that we swapped out controllers with another one. That worked fine for about a week. So now this latest flickering issue, we unplug the DMX from controller, removed power from controller, trip the breakers a couple of times and after about a half hour of doing this, it cleared up.
