Illinois requires battery and 120v power plus interconnects. However, these things will not stop chirping. Even after removing the batteries and unplugging them, they chirp for several minutes (must be an internal capacitor). The battery replacement compartment does not hold the batteries. These should REALLY be recalled. I can't believe something this bad could have made it to market. I will never by another First Alert product after experiencing this piece of trash. The silence feature is really dumb. When you press the silence button, it chirps for fifteen minutes to tell you that it is in silence mode. (How is this silent?) The only way to stop it from chirping is to remove the batteries, pull it off the wall to remove 120v power. Then you need to smash it to pieces to break the circuit board.The real issue is once you unplug one for a short time. If you have a multiple circuit of them they will chirp. My guess is it is their way of saying something isn't right. They will also chirp when the batteries are low. They will even chirp for a time once completely restored with a new battery and wire connection. I'm not sure if it's some sort of sync cycle or what but within 15 to 20mins at the most the sound will go away. If you are just quickly replacing the batteries and not unplugging them they are fine. What I don't get though is that I can turn off the breaker switch when I close up the house for the summer and they are fine. It's only when you unplug them for a while. Strange I know! But really I have no serious issues with this smoke detector. They do what they are suppose to just fine. Detect smoke! Plus you reset one it resets them all. Quite simple!I have a whole house full of them due to a city requirement. When one goes bad you can't tell which one it is. They are supposed to have a rapidly flashing red led on the triggering unit. I've replaced four over five over the last five or six years and none has ever flashed red as the triggering unit.

Low battery chirping.I have six on the main floor and three in the basement. Almost always they start chirping at night.They chirp both on low battery level and when they get dusty. Cleaning doesn't help and battery levels under load are fine.The chirp is supposed to tell you that your battery backup is running low, but I've replaced the battery twice in less than a year and the stupid thing keeps chirping.
