Not read the manual to this meter, but I would hope a power cycle would clear this. On my 8845A it will briefly display the menu at the bottom before displaying measurements during power up. You might lookup 8845 or 8846 on youtube to see what the normal startup looks like to compare yours to. So my gues about remote state is definitely wrong. But all voltages check out fine, reference is fine, no error messages are displayed, clocks are running. But without documentation, this is going to be very hard to trace. Next thing is to check all the opamps (going to take a while).

The reason I'm writing this is: Maybe we can exchange our findings and help each other with the repair? I saw some of their rebranded models landing on ebay this year, lots of them had internals problems, hang ups, lan problems, stuck on boot etc.These units have the peculiar problem you describe. Set up the Meter for the desired measurement by selecting the function, and connecting the signal to the Meter’s input. These triggers are continuous and occur as fast as the configuration will allow. Optional Memory in various storage capacities is available from Fluke. In addition to storing and recalling readings and configurations, a memory management function is available to delete files. After removing the power-up configuration, power the Meter down and back up using the rear-panel power switch to restore factory default settings. The copy process will take several seconds. A USB memory device should never be removed while a write is occurring. The data is initially stored in internal memory and then transferred to the USB memory device. Then it started giving me incorrect readings and in some cases no readings. Some instances I have tested are: resistance, shows correctly but only certain values in the Mohm range so precision is lost. I tried taking readings of a standard household outlet and in freq mode it switches back and forth from “overload” to correctly showing about 60hz, in VAC mode it shows.018 which is clearly wrong and something like.032 when the leads aren’t even attached. The temp mode doesn’t show anything when hooked to the appropriate TC. I opened it up and didn't see any obvious problems and both the replacable fuses are intact, it looks pretty sophisticated, ie: not too many parts I will be capable of replacing. I do not have experience with the oscilloscopes but when you mention a loud pop I assume that would be a power transistor or electrolytic capacitor, but all of those look ok to me. Tektronix among Fluke and Keithley they have now the same Boss, none of them over the years invested in European soil about having spare parts availability specifically for European consumers and market. While I do consider Fluke 8846A next big thing after Fluke 8842A, I am puzzled to deliver a positive vote, because no one ever reviewed this meter according my high standards and neither there is a safety net or promise for spare parts availability over time. Neither in the market of used meters any wise consumer will accepts the fact that his purchase will be sort lived due poor or zero spare parts availability. We people working with electronics repairs and using multimeter, it is our job and nature about repairing things, therefore we always should make decisions by taking in mind the larger picture this including product performance and Repairability. For example a Fluke 8842A within 2018 this measured my 10V voltage reference at 10.0001V, few weeks later a fresh calibrated Fluke 8846A this measured my voltage reference and it confirmed 180uV lower than 8842A, I did use Trimming Output Voltage circuit of LT1021-10 so to get nearer to 8846A cal at 10.00001 V. While I do not hold all answers, I do consider year of 2019 as game changer, and I will advice people whom are also puzzled as I do, them to demonstrate patience.
