Close Cats Dogs Small Pets Other Animals Skip to main content. The Fluval 303 canister filter is typically positioned below the aquarium (Reference 1). Features The Fluval 303 can easily be placed in an aquarium cabinet and has been designed to both operate and to be taken apart in the confines of the aquarium cabinet. The hermetically sealed motor of this power filter has been encased in epoxy and does not need to be serviced at all. The Fluval 303 incorporates valves that control the water flow and hose locks that ensure that both the hoses and valves remain securly attached to the body of the filter. These hose locks also prevent leakage and have been designed to be removed, when necessary, without the use of tools. The Fluval 303 incorporates a water return tube, which provides both oxygenates and agitates the water. By agitating the surface water, oxygen from the atmosphere is replaced and carbon dioxide is released into the environment (Reference 2). Flow rate The volume of water that passes through a canister filter each hour is important, as water carries oxygen to the beneficial bacteria that colonize the biological filter medium. The Fluval 303 has a flow rate of 130-gallons per hour and the water return system is made up of both rigid and flexible tubing, which allows this water to be directed anywhere in the aquarium. A rigid spray bar that allows for the all important, surface water agitation, has been included (Reference 3). Filtration types Mechanical filtration refers to the physically trapping of detritus and large pieces of decaying aquatic plant material and uneaten food. The Fluval 303 canister filter uses a foam inset to perform mechanical filtration. This canister filter incorporates activated charcoal as a chemical filter medium. The charcoal acts as a molecular sieve, in which potentially toxic compounds collect.

All of the water entering the Fluval 303, is forced through the various filter materials before leaving the canister. The extended time that the aquarium water remains in the canister increases filtration quality which improves the functioning of the Fluval 303 filter. BioMax filter media is utilized by the Fluval 303 as a biological filter medium. BioMax provides an appropriate surface upon which the beneficial bacteria, which are responsible for the biological filtration, grow and multiply (Reference 4). The filter helps make aquarium keeping as easy and worry-free as possible thanks to a remarkable range of additional features, including patented Aqua-Stop Valves for easy hose disconnections, single-motion lift-lock clamps for simple cleaning and maintenance, and multiple removable filtration baskets that are already packed with the necessary media for mechanical, chemical, and biological filtration. In addition, the filter has a unique square-shaped canister design that holds 35 to 50 more water than round canister filters of similar size, allowing better water flow through a complex cleansing path that maximizes contact with the filtration media.Sort of like a well-tuned car engine that hums along quietly under the hood. Fishkeepers should be able to focus on the pleasures of having an aquarium and not spend hours labouring over filter upkeep.Fluval's unique square-shaped canister design holds 35-50 more water than round canister filters of similar size, allowing superior flow through a complex cleansing process that allows maximum contact time with filtration media. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. The Customer service from Hagen gave generic advises concerning the inlet being out of the water while priming etc. Nothing helped. I have it in a Fluval aquarium stand, the back is done of flimsy cardboard, that creates some additional vibration too. The famous Fluval hoses with the full flow create a humming noise inside.

Now, to the pros: Solid body, a good set of filtration, convenient quick connect valve system, good priming, perfect flow The maintenance seemed to be relatively easily done Quick update after a week in service: No leakages, the noise slightly reduced, but still presents Water quality is significantly better then before, even with the standard set of filtration Had to order separately one of the hose brackets, the plastic is fragileThe box was opened and was previously used. The interior of the filter was still wet and smelled musty. Unit came with used media and was missing the carbon. Unit was also missing the polishing pad and DVD instructions. Absolutely unacceptable, I am definitely return the product and buying it elsewhere. The 404 has served well over the 20 odd years although various parts had to be replaced due to wear and tear during that time. It got to to the point where the parts were getting harder to obtain and some items (I.e. Impeller cover) was causing more frustration as it was prone to breaking more often. I was going to try I completely different brand of filter but due to price and familiarity I decided to stick with Fluval. The list of improvements on the 406 over previous versions also intrigued me. Upon opening the box I could immediately see the differences from the old 404. I like the clear intake stem and outlet nozzle so algae on the inside can be seen and cleaned out as needed. Filter operation is quiet and flow is great.had to adjust the output to reduce current in the 100 gallon tank. I think Hagen skimped on including carbon media as the trays are barely filled. Ii added more carbon as well as adding the 404's existing ceramic (BioMax) media. So far so good and I'll see how the components hold up over time. The Most: - Super silent - filter power adjustable according to the size of the aquarium - 3 floors for bags of coals, ceramic pipes, etc. - an inlet pump and an individual outlet pump. The cons: - bulky, choose the front location.

- the pipes must be soaked in hot water to be soft and thus be manipulable. I am completely satisfied!Cheap hoses, lousy motor head clamps and seal.It would be a great filter with a few improvements. I have extensively modified mine and now it works ok. It's too bad that when you pay 300 plus dollars for a filter you still have to redesign the entire filter to make it useable. I can't emphasize too much on how cheesy the hoses and connections are. I've used eheim filters in the past and they are much better quality although expensive.I then had to buy and install a new AquaStop Valve. Hopefully this will fix the problem because if not, I'm out of ideas and will have to buy a new Eheim. If I don't post anymore updates, assume that those 2 purchases fixed the issue. ------------------- There's a reason why Eheim is the best in the industry. I bought this Fluval 206 (new) in Jan 2017. It has started leaking from where the power cord exits the top (power head). The design is flawed in my opinion because the only thing stopping water from coming out of the unit is one O-Ring. Once the O-Ring is old, the filter starts leaking. The filter (incl O-Ring) is inspected every few months and lubricated with O-Ring grease. My other aquarium (55g) runs on a SECOND HAND Eheim 2217 and has had 0 problems. I was told that this filter's design has not changed in decades (very source yourself) and for good reason. Sure, the Eheim doesn't have all the bells and whistles (no auto primer, no neat little baskets for media) but IT DOESN'T LEAK. What's more important?Comes with everything you need for the filter. (Plumbing and media) Could include more biological media. Impeller started quiet, then started creating a slight hum after a few weeks. It is also important to push the lid down firmly by hand after cleaning as the two clasps are not capable of pushing the top all the way down.

Since I bought the filter I havent lost a single fish and my water is pristine clear with 2x less water changes. Setup was easy and having 4 filter media baskets is quite an effective setup: Bio foam, Ceramic Noodles, Carbon, Finishing pad and Purigen for the last layer.I love love love this filter it has transformed my tank completely, I started keeping fish in the 70s and all the way through the 80s and 90s and even most of the 00s you really had to over estimate the size of your filter relevant to your tank. My rule of thumb was at least double more often than not triple the size of my filter relevant to size of tank but those days appear to be long gone. I recently purchased a tank which had some weak trickle filter installed in the hood and I knew this would not cut the mustard just by looking at it. The tank construction itself is fantastic but the on board filtration is absolute poop. The aquarium is 4 ft and 300 litres so this is just over as it is market as up to 400 l being a 406. All the little niggly things that were slight issues with the 405 gone in the 406. Operation is super effective and super quiet. Keeps my water absolutely crystal clear and water parameters perfect and I love it so much I don't think I would buy any other brand of filter now. I used to be a Eheim fanatic but when I looked at the current prices they are absurdly expensive compared to these. Due to being less than half the price I did not think it would be as good but it easily surpasses my last Eheim in every measure, Totally converted. My parter has asperger's and as such he has super human hearing which is a concern and even he cannot believe how quite it is. This has got to be the quietest tank I have every had. In fact the T8 fluorescent tubes almost make as much noise. This has cut down my water changes drastically. I keep testing the water hoping i need to do one but no, water parameters still perfect three weeks in. Brilliant filter.

Just two small gripes but these just could be me. I hate the clear intake tube and white connectors. Hate them with a passion as they stand out like a sore thumb on my black background which otherwise hides the black pipework perfectly. Also don't like the fact that you have to purchase a separate spray bar. This is a powerful filter and if you just hook up the return with what they give you i.e. basically straight back into the tank it could churn your tank like a washing machine. I also did not really have enough pipe given to install the intake and out take on opposite sides of the tank as the filter has to fit in one or other side of the cabinet as there is a centre beam which means at 4ft long there is no way you have enough pipe. I got round this by installing the intake and out take on the same side but using a spray bar for the return which I would have done anyway and having the spray bar going almost the full length of the tank. If you don't want to do that you might want to thank about buying more pipe. Overall these are minor issues but it would have been good if you could even purchase black connectors and black intake tubes. Even if I had to buy them separately I would have gladly paid to get them but I have not seen them on sale anywhere. I do believe that the pipework for the 405 i.e. previous model fits this one and that had dark grey connectors so that might be an option. The instructions are in poor English (obviously a translation) and the diagrams are not very clear. After a lot of study, I got it all assembled, but, because the instructions for installing the lid gasket were very unclear, the lid didn't seal, and the filter pumped out half of the water from my 20 gallon aquarium before I pulled it away. I had the filter in a large plastic container, or the water would have gone all over my bedroom floor. Fortunately, I live very near the U.K. agent, so I took it there for help.

The lady who dealt with me was very helpful, and showed me how to install the gasket. The gasket that came with it was damaged by then, and she gave me a new one. The filter is now hooked up, and works fine. I urge the manufacturer to rewrite the manual, to clear up the obscurities. I'm sure we have all had problems with badly written sets of instructions. At least, this time, we can't blame the Chinese. This is a fine aquarium filter. I need to add a word of warning. The water intake has a grid to protect fishes, but one of my panda corydoras was sucked into the intake and it perished. It also sucked in two galaxy rasboras (which are very small fishes), but I found them inside the filter and was able to rescue them - and they are doing fine, months later. After you clean out the filter, you will probably find that you can't prime it. Thanks to a Youtube video, I know how to do that. You hold the two water pipes up in the air, completely above the aquarium water level. Open the white valve all the way, and pour some water into the pipe that goes OUT of the aquarium, until the pipe is full. Then, shut the white valve and re-connect the pipes to the filter: latch up the red catch and then open the white valve all the way. Then pump the primer. The pipe going INTO the aquarium will violently belch out all the air inside the filter - my fishes don't really like that, and they scatter, lol. Then plug the electric wire back in, and five will get you ten. Signor Fluval should really include this vital information in the user manual.

Well what can I say, it has performed flawlesly in that time with no issues, its still very quiet and has had no leaks and I beleive thats down to the fact that it is maintained every month where it is cleaned out and the seals have some silicon grease applied to them, and yes they are still the original seals and the large foam and medium biofoam are also still original, and as they still spring back into shape after a gentle squeeze to get rid of the large particules i see no reason to change them. With regards to the polishing pads, I dont use Fluvals own, I bought a large roll of filter floss from Finest Filters and use this instead and in the process saved a fortune. My only other recomendation is to use Biohome Ultimate filter media and not the stuff that comes with it, your fish will be happier if you do and is probably another of my top purchases and recomendations. So am I happy, Yes, Would I buy another if i got another tank, Absolutely yes. Oh, my tank is 240l (Fluval roma) and is home to 3 Orandas.I also bought the spray bar which I found essential to stop the plants being dislodged by the fast flow from a single outlet. Also purchased extra filter material to reduce cleaning. First six weeks water became crystal clear. Don't be put off by reviews about the noise - this is easily avoided if you follow the instructions exactly. Do be careful to only cut the tubes once you are happy with the location of the filter. Also be aware that if you have a lid on your tank you may have to cut larger holes to accommodate the inlet and outlet tubes (I used a hacksaw). It's easy to clean using the valve stop to disconnect the water. And do remember to only rinse the filter media and the parts of the unit in water from the tank itself, not tap water. A great piece of kit with much thought put into the design and construction. It has saved me loads of time at the weekend, and for that I'm grateful. Can't praise this enough, it's made fishkeeping an absolute doddle.

The Fluval 303 canister filter that came with the setup. It had the Bio max on bottom, the carbon in second level and the foam pads (2) on the top,I put it back together after cleaning it in the same order. I then read on line in the Fluval manual that the bio max should be in middle and carbon on bottom. Any comments as to what order the compartments should be in canister. They did stress the foam pads be on top to protect the impeller from any larger matter that may find its way in filter. Would there be any reason to run a second filter in this planted community tank. I don't know much about the Fluval 303, but canister filters are really good. Takes a bit of a juggler to get all the compartments down pat, but once you get the hang of it.

I would personally add some more bio media and a small filter pad in the bottom tray to add some more biological filtration and the fine particulate filtration but that's just me.As of now it is about half full.Does the boI media have a specific life to it. What is the life expectancy and how often do you experienced aquarists replace. And can you give me some insight as to how this bio media actually works. Fill every basket with as much as it will hold. And don't replace it unless it is absolutely deteriorated and there is insufficient surface area for your bacteria, as hanging onto it becomes counterproductive. I clean all media in tank water and reuse all of it until it's literally falling apart, and then only replace some at a time. The only thing I chuck out regularly is carbon. Also, the media works by providing a porous surface area, (and with lots of small hollow pieces there is a lot of surface!) that the bacteria can live on. Terra-cotta is used for decoration frequently because even fired it is very porous and the perfect home for your bacteria. Some filters have plastic for the the bacteria, but I'm not convinced it does a sufficient job.
