:-)When I use the electronic timer it is 1) difficult to set up with the current time and the operating intervals; 2) even though it has a battery backup, it loses the current time setting when a power outage occurs; 3) the button controls are unresponsive at times when trying to set up the timer; 4) various other problems with the operation of the device. Although I have not installed the intermatic non-electronic timer yet, I can see that the interval setting are very simple as well as the current time setting. This timer should simplify and greatly improve my ability to control the swimming pool filter that I will use it for. With the breakers turned off, it is usually safe to handle and remove the mechanism from the box, but use a power meter set on AC volts to be sure power is off before handling the timer mechanism, or touching wires with a screwdriver. Grasp the dial, pull out and turn it to the correct time. Releasing the dial, you should feel the gears engage slightly, so that the dial is fully seated. With the power off at the breaker box, and checked with n electric meter, the wires can be removed, 2-in, 2-out, and the ground wire. The mechanism can then be removed by depressing a clip at the top inside of the timer box, just above the mechanism. Pop-in a new timer mechanism, and replace the wires to the previous configuration. It can actually take less than 5 minutes. But then again, Intermatic timer motors can be half the cost of a new mechanism, depending on the model. Here’s a real nice pictorial on how to replace an Intermatic timer motor, or mechanism. I think you’ve got a screw loose, and you probably pull the tags off of all your furniture too. We expected both variables to enhance the above proposed process through which victims determine the sincerity of the apology. Fifty-eight students took the victim’s role in a fictitious crime scenario and watched a video in which the offender offered a remorseful apology. We obtained eye tracking data to determine the participants’ fixation and attention distribution. As expected, the participants’ gaze fixated significantly longer on the upper face. The results also showed that their prior expectations, positive ARPs, and inferences of suffering and responsibility taking after the apology all positively predicted the perceived sincerity. However, unexpectedly, gaze duration was not directly associated with these inferences. The fixation duration on the upper face instead appeared to moderate how ARPs predicted inferences of responsibility taking. More concretely, the exploratory path model analyses revealed that when the participants had more positive a priori ARPs, the longer they focused on the offender’s eyes and eyebrows and the more they concluded that he took responsibility for his actions (which in turn predicted more sincerity). However, for those with relatively negative ARPs, it was the other way around: the more they focused on the eyes and the eyebrows, the stronger they inferred that the offender did not take responsibility (which predicted less sincerity). Our findings demonstrate the vital role of the victims’ a priori attitudes, expectations, and eye gaze behavior in understanding the reception and the evaluation of offenders’ apologies. With its well-developed theoretical grounding and its growing evidence base, the restorative justice movement provides an obvious place to start when thinking about reintegration. Yet there has been relatively little application of restorative models in the reentry context.
We argue that restorative justice interventions are too often focused on the “soft end” of the justice process, when a growing body of evidence suggests that restorative practices might be more effectively focused on the reintegration process for more serious offenses. Finally, engaging in cooperative efforts and resolving conflicts constructively inculcates civic values. It is the combination of cooperative experiences, constructive conflict resolution, and civic values that most effectively ensures that all relevant parties can redress past wrongs and reconcile with each other.
View Show abstract Responding to Hate Crimes through Restorative Justice Dialogue Article Mar 2006 Contemp Justice Rev Robert B. Coates Mark S. Umbreit Betty Vos Hate promotes violence. Dialogue among conflicting parties and groups is one way to decrease hate and help prevent bias-motivated crimes. Restorative justice has emerged in the last three decades as a means of giving all who are stake-holders in a crime—victims, offenders, and the community to which they belong—a voice in how harm can be repaired and future harm prevented. The present article reports on a two-year study of seven communities that utilized elements of a restorative justice dialogue approach as one component of responding to bias-motivated crimes and hate-charged situations. Following presentation of three case studies, the article highlights the invitational nature of such dialogue, the preparation of participants, and the dialogue process. It also examines factors that influence the dialogue, including the intense impact of hate crimes, the role of the media, and the involvement of outside interest groups. Finally, it explores ways to sustain the dialogue after the crisis recedes. Normative regulation coupled with punishment in this bargain. As a result, even during the heyday of the welfare sanction and at rehabilitation's height, punitive and deterrent penalties remained important. Similarly, there is substantial evidence that increasingly widespread approaches such as restorative justice, therapeutic justice and risk-need models carry a newly revised correctionalism into the present. Rather than conceive recent changes as indicative of a watershed in penal rationality and practice, this article suggests that it is more important to think about the ways in which neo-liberal assaults on the modernist side of this equation have transformed its character.
