how to remove manual window crank handle

The window is opened and closed (and held in the open or closed position) with a manual window crank. Over time, the gears of the crank can become stripped, making opening and closing the window difficult. In this event, you can remove a manual window crank in just a few minutes with some basic hand tools. 1 Unlock the window lock on the side of the sash, then rotate the handle on the crank mechanism to open the window. If the crank handle spins on the stem, slide the handle off of the stem and inspect the grooves of the stem. If the grooves appear to be in good condition, inspect the matching grooves in the handle to see if the problem with the window's operation is merely a stripped crank handle. 2 Connect a pair of locking vise grip pliers to the stem and rotate the stem to open the window if the stem is stripped. Continue rotating the stem until the end of the crank arm aligns with the notch in the guide track attached to the casement window. Then push down on the crank arm to dislodge the arm from the guide track. 3 Loosen the screws in the trim cover that hides the body of the crank mechanism using a screwdriver. If no screws are visible, gently slide the end of a flat pry bar between the window sill and the trim cover to loosen the finish nails or staples holding the trim cover in place. Lift and remove the trim cover. 4 Remove the mounting screws holding the crank mechanism in place with a screwdriver, then lift the entire mechanism off of the window sill. 5 Loosen the screws that hold the guide track to the bottom of the casement window, and pull the track off of the window. Pull the casement window closed with your hand, and lock the window using the locking mechanism on the side of the window frame. Things Needed Locking vise grip pliers Screwdriver Flat pry bar Warnings Exercise caution when removing a manual window crank in windy conditions, as the wind could catch the window and fling it open, damaging the hinge mechanism or the casement window.

Tips If you intend to replace the window crank, take the old mechanism to the home center to buy or order a matching replacement unit. This is usually only done if you want to install aftermarket power windows or if you are taking your door apart for servicing or replacing speakers, yet it's still the hardest part of taking apart the door! Tools Needed: Window Crank Tool or Cotton Rag Procedure: Diagram: Window Crank Tool:Eventually you'll hit the right spot, and the clip will pop off. Older Dakota models may also come equipped with manual windows. Manual windows are operated by a simple turn-crank, often called a window crank. The crank attaches to the knob, which raises and lowers the window based on the direction it is turned. Removing the Dakota's window crank is simple and only takes a few minutes. Step 1 Roll your Dakota's window all the way down. Note the exact position of the handle (for re-installation). Step 2 Insert the window crank tool between the door panel and the window crank's base. Push the tool firmly to release the spring clip. The spring clip will pop out; do not lose it, you'll need it to reinstall the window crank. Grasp the window crank by its base. Pull the crank away from the Dakota's door panel. Tips You can purchase a window crank tool from any auto parts store. The tool is generic; it does not need to be specifically made for the Dodge Dakota. To reinstall the window crank, position the crank back in place (in the same position as when you removed it). Push the sprint clip around the knob, behind the crank's base, until it snaps on. How to Reset a Cadillac's Computer How to Program a Toyota Rav4 Smart Key How do I Replace a 2007 Buick. If your car does not have electric windows, then you have car window crank handles on your doors. If one of these handles becomes damaged, you can easily fix it without taking your car to the auto mechanic. This is easy to do even if you have no mechanical skill at all. You likely won't need much in the way of tools either. To replace a car window crank you'll likely just need needle nose pliers. !. Find a New Window Crank You'll be surprised at how many window cranks are available at auto supply stores. I bought mine on eBay, but you might be able to get what you need at a store with a little luck. It helps to know that make, model, and year of your car. Search online or try the store first and get yourself a crank. Make sure the car window crank comes with a clip (shown in my pictures both next to and installed on the crank). You'll need the clip for sure. 2. Prepare to Remove the Old Crank See if you are able to roll your window all the way up using the old crank. If the crank is in really bad shape or is already off the door, you might be able to put an adjustable wrench onto the shaft sticking out of the door (where the crank used to be) and roll the window up. You might even be able to do it by hand. Actually, if you are really savvy, you might be able to put the new crank on the door shaft (but don't install the clip yet) and roll it all the way up. Then continue reading below. Whatever you do, make sure the window is up. Basically, there is a clip that holds the window crank handle to a shaft in the door. The clip is located on the opposite end of the side of the crank you grasp with your hand. Pictures below show the crank with this clip inserted. While being careful to not to scuff your car door, take a pair of needed nosed pliers and get between the door and the inside of the crank.

If you are unable to remove the clip, you might need to get a special tool that you can buy at most auto parts stores. A local Pep Boys had one for mine, but I did not need to buy it. If the clip is not installed the handle (as shown in the photo below the clip), you'll need to install it. The actual position of the clip might differ depending on the car your own and type of crank you by, but they are likely very similar. For mine, the clip fit into the window crank very easily as shown in the third picture. You can just install it by hand. No tools needed. Just squeeze the clip and slip it into the handle. Let go and it will lock itself in. See the shaft in the door. You'll see there is a groove or spline that goes around the shaft as shown. When you put the new crank on, you'll want to install it so that the part you grab with your hand (the handle part) is in the position you are familiar with. If you aren't sure, I'd suggest installing the part you grab ( handle ) at the two o'clock position or thereabout. Keep pressing. It might take a little elbow grease and some slight jiggling (be careful not to break the handle). Keep pressing until you feel the clip lock into the groove (spline) in the shaft. Once that is locked in, your car door window crank has been successfully replaced. Watch Installation of Roll Up Window Crank Let's put it all together now. Can someone teach me please. There are several ways to remove it: use a special tool for doing this. Most autoparts stores will know what you are talking about (and if they don't they should be fired) Use a little screwdriver (or a pair of screwdrivers) to pop the clip off from the open end. Just push on the two little ends with a screwdriver until it pops off My favorite, use a rag. I read this somewhere on Miata.net. Turn the doorhandle until the open end of the clip faces up, then work the folded edge of a thick rag into the gap between the door panel and the window crank. Hi, I'm Mike from 1A Auto. I hope this how-to video helps you out, and next time you need parts for your vehicle, think of 1AAuto.com. Thanks. The easiest way is the proper tool to get this handle off. You put it in here. There's actually a washer in behind the handle so you want to make sure that the tool goes between the handle and the washer. You can push it on the door handle a little bit. Move that over there. Then you push and that pushes the clip off and then the handle and washer come off and then you'll want to reset the clip. Push it right in. If you don't have one of those tools, what you can do is take a regular paper clip, bend it like that, and grab a very small part of the end. Make a little hook in it. Put our handle back on here with the clip. The clip should be.What you do is take the hook of the paper clip, put it in there. Try to put it in as straight as you can and kind of push into the handle like that a little bit. Push it in there. Pull that hook out and your handle comes off. You've got to kind of force it in there, twist it to engage that hook, and then pull it out. Here's a close up. So here's how your handle is on the door. When you press your handle, press it towards the door like this. That will actually open up your washer a little bit. Then you put this down in here and I'll kind of show you.

What you're looking to do is put this down in and then hook it like that and then pull straight out. You can see it pulls the clip right up. If you pull hard enough, it will pull the thing right out. Just watch where the clip goes when it comes out. We hope this video helps you out. Brought to you by www.1AAuto.com, your source for quality replacement parts and the best service on the Internet. To remove it, a blunted screwdriver has been known to work (be careful not to damage the doorcard) - to put it back on the easiest way is to put it into the groove on the crank and THEN shove the whole shebang over the splined shaft.Push the door panel in right by the handle. You should be able to see some tabs at the end of the handle. Take a screw driver and pry up on one of the tabs while pulling on the handle. It should pop right off.The clip will come off, just watch were it goesPlease enter your desired user name, your email address and other required details in the form below. THUMPER 4.0 out of 5 stars Just position this tool so the prongs are directly facing the open prongs of the retaining clips and push, clips will pop right off. Reason for 4 stars and not 5 is because the 90 degree bend they put on the end of the handle, it gets in the way ALL the time and if youre not paying close attention you will very easily put a deep gouge in your vintage impossible to replace original 1970 door panel, or whatever gets scratched. I realize its there to give you added leverage but it sticks out way to far and is to sharp, just a bad design as far as that bend goes. However, as handy as this tool is its definitely worth the money and as long as you are careful you can avoid causing any damage 95 of the timeI have used screwdrivers to remove the clips in the past which was slightly frustrating, but more importantly, usually scuffed up the door panel. This tool did not cause any scuff marks on the door panel, and after a minute or two of aligning it properly, popped the clip right off. That popped off the ring faster than the tool.Use a rag or something to catch the clip. Got lucky and find it. Tool is great, clip retains shape. This is exactly the same. Popped the window crank and door handle off the door quick and easy. Highly recommended. Cheap and reliable. It did fit my 1995 Chevy S10 perfectly, you just have to play around with it a little to work.Used it to replace the vent and door cranks in minutes. Worth every cent!It makes the job quick and easy. It's a struggle without it.
