I also recommend It begins with a basic overview of fundraising and preparation for fundraising, then delves into the different strategies you can, ranging from auctions to scrip to special events. That is very helpful. If you need a fundraising idea, this is your book. The only downside is that the book doesn't provide an overall fundraising plan. A fundraising plan is started in the beginning of the book, but it is not fully complete. This is understandable since there are so many options and so situations that a fundraising group can face. Still, it would have been nice for the author to attempt. Still, a great book for any nonprofit's bookshelf. You could spend a whole lifetime using the examples and strategies for your nonprofit or group.The book is divided into chapters that cover every type of fundraising and how-tos including sponsorships, selling goods, event planning, dinners and food events, auctions, fairs, benefit events, tours, and walkathons and sporting events plus a few other areas. First and foremost is learning about your organization and its status, liabilities, volunteer base, and needs. The book then delves into the specific types of events and gives tips and examples on how to run a successful, profitable event. As with most of Nolo's library of books, this one includes a cd rom featuring an additional (and very substantial) bonus chapter on grants and applying for them. I spent the most time in this chapter with all of its links to different resources and instruction on grant preparation. In fact, this chapter was so substantial, it comes with a Table of Contents of its own. I've applied for several grants already for my organization using a lot of the advice provided in this chapter. There is a little bit of everything in this book, but if you are a full-time worker, it may not be realistic for your lifestyle. For me, it was a little overwhelming. I like to learn how to apply new techniques, but I found it hard trying to read through hundreds of pages. If it was broken up into a series of books, maybe 50 pages each, dealing with different aspects of volunteering, I would have enjoyed it more. But overall, I think it will come in handy for beginners more than it would for experienced volunteers'. If you are experienced, you probably know most of the information in this book. But beginners should definitely give it a try.This is primarily meant to be used as a reference guide, with the organizer turning to the chapter(s) relevant to their project. However I do recommend reading at least most of the book through, as it may help give you some ideas that you had not considered yet. Each section is fully detailed with anecdotes and examples. Steps for being successful with your efforts are clearly outlined. The companion CD that comes with the book is worth the cost of the book alone, as it holds blank forms for what was discussed in the text itself, as well as a bonus chapter on obtaining grants. Three mp3 files are also located on the disc, featuring talks with the author Ilona Bray and her interviews with some of the advisors presented throughout the book. Definitely an invaluable resource for anyone involved in the administration and organizing of fundraising efforts - 5 stars was an easy decision for me on this one!

I wish I had it back when my kids were younger and it seemed every other day I had to help raise funds for a sporting event, school activity or club.Then each chapter goes into detail on how to raise money using the different types of fundraising - car washes, bake sales, auctions, sponsorhips, dinners, shows, etc. All the while there is helpful advice and tips from experts interjected in each section, including tips on legal issues that should always be taken seriously. There's also sample forms to use and a bonus chapter on applying for grants on the CD-ROM that accompanies the book. I think every small (and probably even the not-so-small) non-profit organization can benefit from the guidance in this bookI really liked that near the beginning of the book is where you can find the 4 classes of non-profit determination that one needs for IRS qualifications. I probably would have given this five stars if I were actively involved in a fundraising program at the present time. Since I'm currently not, I was rather overwhelmed with all the information. So I recommend it most heartily for those who are currently doing fundraising or are about to wade in. The book certainly helps to take away many of the fears involved with fundraising by answering most of the common dilemmas and also by getting the reader used to the necessary downsides of the work that one must just get over and get accomplished. Fundraising is a fact of economic life for any volunteer group. It requires a book such as this to lend volunteers the expertise and confidence necessary to do such a consistent and thorough job that they see the spectacular results that can happen with patience and passion.
I have loaned this book out to other members of our Board to receive their inputs and make this a better review (in keeping with the Vine program guidelines I informed them this book must be returned to me, it is not their possession, and it will not be kept in the organization's library, unless we want to purchase a copy). The enclosed CD is also an excellent idea. We found this a much more useful guide for a small nonprofit than the previous NOLO guide, Effective Fundraising for Nonprofits. The book's tips on legal requirements was most useful and should be worth the price of the book, and even if you have access to a lawyer, will help everyone become smarter on these issues so they can ask better questions. About all you may need after this one is some way to get everyone to roll up their sleeves and begin work!The various governmental entities - particularly the states - have promulgated a vast array of laws regarding fundraising - generally so that people don't get ripped off by sham charities etc. But there are things that you, being on the up-and-up, may not have even realized that you need to comply with. This book covers almost any situation that you are likely to have. A caveat however: the laws vary considerably from state to state and the best way to know if you are in compliance with your local laws is to contact your Secretary of State and have them send you the set of laws that govern you in your locale. You also might want to check with your city, county, and property owner's association before you firm things up for your effort. Bon chance!Beginning with the basics on what your group can and can't do when raising money and ending with a CD-ROM of premade forms for you to get started using or adapt your own from. Truly a treasure trove of practical, ready to implement fundraisers. The second chapter of this book is a healthy talk on volunteer recruitment and readiness.

As one should know there's nothing more factual about how to get a volunteer to never return when they show up to a unorganized disaster. Getting volunteers involved in the area's of their strengths, communication, and training are all hit upon in this chapter. The absolute favored of all chapters for me was the creative idea of a bed race or other events that promote teams and their ingenuitiy in decorating or constructing something hilarious. I think this is a genius idea for getting businesses involved or groups for a cause. If you are a novice who is wanting to organize a fundraising event then this is the book!It gives you excellent advice on not only how to raise money for your pet volunteer organization, but legal pitfalls to avoid (including the biggies on tax exemptions and accountability for funds.) You must protect yourself and your organization when money is involved. People have gone to jail for misappropriating funds from non-profit groups. It is really easy to make costly mistakes. This manual is well-organized and easy to use. Like most Nolo legal guides for the layperson, it comes with a CD-ROM of sample forms that you may need. If you are embarking on fundraising, you should have the information which this book provides.
