The text, color scheme, design, paper material (matte, easy reading) are all easy to read and comfortable. There is ample space for problem-solving. However, the only issue I had with this book is that I wouldn't recommend this for IB Standard Maths. I say this as I am a Maths Studies student and I found that it did not always cover everything I had to know for our unit tests. Also- the link for the answers are on the BACK COVER of the book.It doesn't matter that it's old or a reclaimed item, it is still completely relevant and useful in my IB Maths Studies classes. Plus it was dirt cheap and still in fantastic condition. Each student completes a project based on their own research; this is guided and supervised by the teacher. The project provides an opportunity for students to carry out a mathematical study of their choice using their own experience, knowledge and skills acquired during the course. This process allows them to take sole responsibility for a part of their studies in mathematics. This course prepares the student for the required Standard Level IB examination in Mathematical Studies. This IB course is weighted by applying an additional 1.0 quality point value assigned to the final grade upon completion of the course Topics covered in this course include: Arlington Public Schools (APS) pays for the examination fees for all IB classes. All fees are established by the International Baccalaureate Organization. Additionally, as outlined in the APS Program of Studies, students who do not complete the required assessments will not earn the additional quality point. Please see below for details, under assignments and make-ups Late projects will negatively affect the project portion of the grade. Assignments: It is imperative to be present during the warm-up as this grade will be part of your homework grade and being tardy or absent will certainly affect this grade negatively. Homework will be given most class periods and is due at the start of the next class period. Generally, all the answers are in the back of the textbook. All homework should be done in the notebook. Students are to check their work before class. A complete assignment must include the original problem with all work shown. A zero will be given to homework with no or little work shown. Students must complete the assignments with sufficient accuracy to demonstrate comprehension. Students are to ask questions on homework not understood in class the next day. Homework turned in within two days week of the due date (with comprehension demonstrated) will receive 2.5 points.
No homework will be accepted for credit after the test on the material has been given. On most days I will not collect homework; instead I will look at it and assign points at the beginning of the class period. To earn all 5 points you will need to try every problem in the assignment, show all your work, follow the directions for each problem, and have the assignment ready to show me when I ask for it. Answers only will receive no credit. Each of these possible deviations will cost you a point: doing more than half, but less than all, of the assignment; not showing your work; partially completed assignments; not following directions; showing me an assignment late (including on the due date but after class is over). Show all your work! Reviews and homework must be taken seriously. Students should actively participate in reviews and ask questions when they need additional support or clarification. My goal is for you to be prepared to take a test or quiz and to do well on it. Tests and quizzes cannot be made up if the absence is unexcused. Attendance and Make-up work policy: See me or email me if you want to meet with me outside of class time to help answer any questions. These assignments must be completed outside of class time in the presence of a mathematics teacher. Otherwise these assignments will be graded as 0. Work missed as a result of unexcused late arrival will not be accepted for credit. If tardies continue the student will be referred to administrative action. After the test or quiz on a topic, the work may not receive any credit as that is a firm deadline. Work turned in on time (with comprehension demonstrated) will receive 5 points. Work turned in within one week of the due date (with comprehension demonstrated) will receive 2.5 points. No work will be accepted for credit after the test on the material has been given.

Attendance: According to the APS School Board Policy Implementation Procedures 25-1.1, Attendance, “Students forfeit daily grades for all unexcused absences.” Students entering the class after the bell has rung will be marked tardy and will lose credit for warm-up already in progress. In my class, being on time means you are in your seat and ready to begin class when the bell rings. 3 unexcused tardies will result in after school detention and parent notification. The teacher expects behavior that contributes to optimal student growth. Respect your teacher and your fellow students. When you enter the classroom, you are to be seated and prepared for work. Be proud of your work and turn in neat papers without messy fringes torn out of a tablet. Lessons are intended to be engaging and challenging. If you are caught cheating on any assignment including homework, quizzes, tests or for any class, I will write up a referral. Sharing a calculator with a classmate during a test or a quiz IS considered cheating. There is absolutely no sharing of calculators during assessments. Students will be asked to sign an honor pledge for each major assignment turned in. By signing the pledge, students will acknowledge their understanding of the honor policy and that they have not violated that policy in any way. Honor Pledge: “On my honor, I pledge that I have neither given nor received information on this assignment.” INTERNAL ASSESSMENT (IA) This is a piece of written work based on your personal research from a wide variety of topics including, but not limited to investigations, applications, statistical studies and surveys. This project is an independent research and data gathering project for which you must collect, prepare, organize, analyze, and evaluate data. The written paper is a critical component of your IB grade; it will be accompanied by charts, tables, graphs, and other representations of your data through use of technology. This project is an integral part of the course and counts as 20 of your final IB grade and will form 7 of your class grade, as stated above. You are expected to meet all IA deadlines in a timely manner. Not meeting the IA deadlines will affect the project portion of your grade. Electronic Devices School Policy In order to help maintain a classroom environment centered on learning, the math department has adopted a cell phone policy in all math classrooms. Students will not have cell phones (or other electronic devices) on their person, their desk, or visible in any way.
