You become relaxed just looking at it. The North Coast with many little gems to visit and a gorgeous countryside, incl.A bird watcher's paradise, lush with wildlife and unusual fauna. The rugged West Coast, a surfer's paradise, with quiet, chill villages like Medewi - the way Bali used to be before tourism overran the South. Bali Indonesia will Enchant you Wherever you go, Bali will enchant and inspire you with stunning vistas, soaring heights, and a vibe just quiet and relaxed - to get away from it all. The writing is informative, simple and interesting, and the pictures complement the text. I skimmed the Lonely Planet books about Bali and was disappointed at the lack of information on things to do that weren't in the big tourist-y southern tip of the island. This was a quick, yet info-packed read with great advice on how to see a more authentic side of Bali. Can't wait for my trip in May. MC 5.0 out of 5 stars I read the book cover to cover in two nights prior to heading to Bali. I had heard the taxi drivers can quote a price and then once you are at your destination, that quoted price can change significantly. I used the guide, Gede Lausen, Gundi recommended in this book. Gede Lausen was great. He was punctual, actually arrived at hotel about 15 minutes early each day we toured with him. He is very knowledgeable about the area. Gede Lausen was polite, courteous, and showed us things we would have never seen on our own. Highly, highly recommend contacting Gede Lausen if you plan on visiting Bali. I found him through facebook and private messaged the arrangements.

Everything Gundi recommended to see is well worth it and those sites touted as somewhat lacking were verified through friends that went to those sites when we split up and went our separate ways a couple of days. Thank you Gundi. You made a great trip even better. While Bali is known for its beaches, this book take us away from the loud, tourist-filled beaches and carries us to the quieter and spiritual parts of the island where one can really experience the culture and people. It is clear that she has spent time in these areas and has done some thorough research, which she thankfully shares with us here. She presents the itinerary from the perspective of driving to each location, so if you plan to drive, this would be very helpful. I have been to the beaches in southern Bali, but after reading this book I very much want to return to the island to visit Ubud and the other areas Ms. Gabrielle discusses in her book. I am an avid traveler and use many different types of travel books and websites when I travel. I would definitely use this book as a resource for planning my next trip to Bali. This book includes helpful information for planning your trip to Bali, including maps, history, cultural and language tips, accommodation, transportation, weather, visa information and much more. The author includes descriptions of various sights and activities, as well as her opinion, suggestions and helpful tips about what to see and what to avoid. She provides brief but thoughtful reviews of various sights, restaurants and hotels, including helpful details like how to get there, travel time and even what to order. She has included lots of very nice photos as well, which is very helpful when planning your itinerary. What I really like about this book is that it is very easy to read, yet extremely informative. Her writing style is very relaxed and friendly, even humorous at times, which makes the book enjoyable to read.

I also love that she takes us off the beaten path and introduces us to some incredible places that we otherwise might not be inclined to visit. This book does not include addresses, phone numbers, websites or hours of operation, so you would have to use other resources if you need this information. All in all, this is an excellent and informative book that introduces us to new and wonderful sights in Bali and helps make it simple to visit these areas with a solid plan and itinerary.I liked more her style to approach the unusual places and discover unfamiliar places. It didn’t provide info about the dangerous side of visiting Bali, mainly health, emergencies. What vaccinations would one need. Where to get help for a health (or any other kind) of emergency. Photographs are blurry, of poor quality because the book is printed on cheap paper. Not worth the money. This book helped me understand the layout of the island, what makes each region special, and gave me the perfect starting point for making travel plans. This is a very good choice if you don't know where to start in planning a visit to Bali, have limited time to read, and do not need detailed, step-by-step, city guides. Appreciate the insight of a solo traveler. All from the point of view from an experienced traveler. You feel like you have been there:)It is simple and easy to read, as opposed to most travel guides that are overwhelming. I appreciated the author's insight and advice.Packed with her personal insights, experiences and gorgeous photos this guide is perfect for travelling slowly and embracing this beautiful island. Lots of helpful information on the many amazing sights to visit, a few touristy traps to avoid and stunning places to stay. Highly recommended!Last year we visited a very touristy island that was on my bucket list, but stayed in the wrong place, and it ruined the experience for us, so this time I was determined not to repeat the mistake.

The advice in the book is down to earth and real with the added bonus that Gundi is only an email away if you still have a question.Packed with useful tips, this book will help you enjoy this beautiful island more. Highly recommended.Everything mentioned was pretty accurate although we were a little diaspointed with the Buddhist temple near Lovina.Amazon is not legally responsible for the accuracy of the tags represented. Reviewed for Readers Favorite. A fabulous read with endless information that is both useful and interesting. This book really helped me to tailor make my Bali experience. I'm just sad that I only bought the book when already IN Bali, but that didn't matter. I just adjusted the plans and voila. A brilliant holiday. Gundi has a wonderful way of describing each location with such passion and accuracy. Her tips and advice are worth far more than the cost of the book - of that I assure you!!! Lovely book with awesome step by step maps to take you all around Bali WITHOUT an expensive guide. It's packed full of information and her insight is wonderful. We have just moved to Bali (after living on Sulawesi for 5 years) and this was exactly what I was looking for. Thank you! It's packed full of information and her insight is wonderful. Thank you! 0 out of 5 stars It's darned near useless as a travel guide of the sort most tourists want, which seems to me to be a result of a combination of the Kindle format and the disappointingly useless content. When I travel I'm most interested in having a pocket guide that right up front tells me the primary do's and don'ts of an area, especially any health hazards (like never drinking the local water) to avoid, with tips on local language and recommendations for dining and tourist itineraries plus notes on typical tourist sights and attractions. I also appreciate some info on local culture and history. This guide opens with a series of essays by various people. These are mostly interesting but way too focused on details of religion not at all interesting in general tourism and not efficient at all for the traveler. You have to dig into the chapters at the very back for practical advice such as never, ever drinking the water. Coverage of tourist sights and restaurants was extremely ad hoc and limited. For example, there's virtually nothing on the famous Monkey Forest, one of the must-not-miss things to do in Ubud. My wife's printed pocket guidebook to Bali was far better. So, if you want some idiosyncratic essays on Balinese religion and culture with a hit-or-miss coverage of various regions in Bali in the form of idiosyncratic essays this is the book. Otherwise, skip it and get the Lonely Planet or other similar book.It was an excellent companion in our trip to Bali. Map and details are very convenient. You will learn all about Bali to make sure you dont miss a spot during your adventure. We had hotels the 3 first nights but last 5 nights just booking at last minute. I read book recommemdations but also check agoda website for more convenient prices. Book is excellent!!! Trip made in January 2017.Fully two-thirds of the book's 332 pages are dedicated to these topics, first in an island-wide overview and then by region and major town.

The first two-thirds is why you buy a Periplus guidebook (the last third is why you don't absolutely have to carry another guide on your trip): to have a collection of two page single topic essays that, together, gives you the background you need to decide what you want to see and where you want to go in Bali. It is fun to read and in-depth enough to be helpful without being overwhelming. What you won't find here are reviews of restaurants and hotels, thousands of stock photographs or sn overly optimistic (or pessimistic) view of Bali and its people. If I re-read just two guides on Bali before my next trip, this will be one of them. I highly recommend it for the travelers that like to know just enough to strike out and explore on their own.I use a lot of them, including Lonely Planet, Rough Guides, and the DK Eyewitness guides. The Periplus surpasses them all, though I have to add that I have not yet read these others for Bali. I will read at least one of them soon and will not fail to complete this comparison. As for Periplus, though it was published in 2005, the value is in the commentaries on Balinese history and culture, which will not have changed much. Chapters devoted to each aspect of these topics comprise the first quarter of the book, then followed by chapters devoted to the different regions of the island. Chapters are short and easily digestible; writing is very good and clear. Discussion of points of interest are also very well done. All parts of the book contain beautiful photos which, as a photographer, I appreciate very much. The maps are also good and sufficiently detailed. Since my own lodging is already arranged I did not pay any attention to the recommendations on accommodation and restaurants in the back of the book, and a traveler would want to consult more up-to-date info on these topics. But as an introduction to Balinese history, culture, and points of interest, Periplus does a superb job.If you plan on traveling to bali.

If you plan on traveling to bali and want a travel guide i would suggest something else. If you are studying bali for school or just out of curiosity, and want text book, this book is for you. I have read many travel books and it seems the author in this one really has no passion or opinion about anything talked about in this book. Its simply a lot of bland information. The map was nice. that was about it. It is written like a school text book but harder to navigate with lots of useless information. From what I've read in the book so far, this is very informative and useful and I am looking forward to diving into it. Will update this review when I have don that.Page 1 of 1 Start over Page 1 of 1 Previous page Next page. And also officially one of the best islands in the world. Mostly South Bali is much popular among tourists for beaches and whole night parties.

But to enjoy the real Balinese tradition and culture, one traveler should explore the west, south-east, and north part of Bali as well. The remote Bali is still much quiet, calm, and enchanting which needed to explore for all. She later married to a Balinese man and now happily settled in Bali with her husband (De Neefe) and four children. She lovingly adopted Balinese culture and tradition. This book is all about Bali lifestyle and culture, first published in 1937. Magical Bali is also known as Island of God and Island of Temples. This book will give you all detailed information about the life of Bali, Balinese people, their religion, custom, and love for art. Another writer Adrian, who has done much research on Bali and took part to bring this book again to the readers who love Bali and eager to know all about this fascinating island. This book is a perfect one if you’re interested to know and learn the tradition of Bali. And the writer shared his experience with the traditional Bali and the Balinese life and culture. Here she is with My Own Way To Travel to share her adventures on the road. To her nothing is so interesting than exploring new destinations around. And knowing a new culture and meeting new peoples on the road. Oh, yeah she just loves that too. I love how all of these books show a different perspective on the Island, food, culture, tourism and much more. I must get there! I have never got an opportunity to do so, yet, though. Till I get around to planning that Bali trip, I’ll content myself with reading these books. Great list! ?? Thank you ?? I had referred to Lonely Planet guide and some travel blogs. Bali has so many different attractions that it’s difficult to make it to everything the first time. We would love to visit again. But it has not happened so far. Hopefully it will materialize soon. Glad that I have read already 2 books on your list. And while my travel gets planned, I will read some more from this list ?? But hope to get to one of the most exotic islands in the world someday. And yes these books seem really great in terms of not only understanding the bare facts and information about Bali, but also the ethos of the place. I do lots of online research and read about things to do before planning for the holiday. So I would definitely read some of these listed books, before planning for Bali. And better to explore all landmarks without the help of any Guide to avoid the extra charge.I’m with My Own Way To Travel to inspire solo travel and motivate all through the journey.
