Follow the Maintenance Schedule recommendations to ensure that the snowmobile is in peak operating condition. Performing the scheduled maintenance is very important. It compensates for the initial wear that occurs during the life of the snowmobile. The subsequent pages give detailed procedures. If you don’t know the source of the trouble, go to the troubleshooting page for a list of causes and effects to determine the problem. Using additional oil under normal conditions will lead to spark plug fouling and rapid carbon buildup. Refer to the following when mixing oil with the fuel. Never open a container containing gasoline near sparks, heat or flame. Do not smoke while mixing fuel. Perform all schedules on time during the snowmobiling season. Refer to Table 1 (daily), Table 2 (monthly) and Table 3 (seasonally). Likewise, perform chassis and steering inspection procedures after major service has been performed to those components. Do not allow any smoking in areas The oil is burned with the fuel and expelled through the exhaust. The various components of the engine are lubricated by the oil as it clings to the various parts as it passes through the crankcase and cylinders. All models are equipped with an oil injection system. Pre-mixing oil with the fuel is not required on any of the models covered in this manual except during engine break-in. See Break-In in this chapter. Ski-Doo recommends using gasoline with a minimum octane rating of 87. Consult with a Ski-Doo dealership for specific local gasoline recommendations.
During engine operation, oil is automatically injected into the engine at a variable ratio depending on engine rpm. Check the oil level in the reservoir tank (Figure 1) daily and each time gasoline is added to the fuel tank. The oil tank is equipped with an oil level sensor that is connected to the injection oil level pilot lamp on the instrument panel. When the oil level in the tank reaches a specified low point, the pilot lamp lights. Add oil as soon as possible when the low oil pilot light comes on. When the oil level is low, perform the following. Fill the tank until the oil level is up to the full mark on the transparent tank. 3. Reinstall the fill cap and close the hood. The recommended oil is classified API GL-3 gear oil with a viscosity rating of SAE 75 or 80. Different types or brands often vary slightly in their composition and a mixture of any of them may not lubricate as well as one type or brand alone. Always try to use one type and brand of oil. Open the shroud. Wipe the dipstick off and insert it back into the chaincase. Read the oil level on the side that correlates to the type of chaincase, no reverse gear (STD) or with reverse gear (REVERSE). The oil level should be between the upper and lower arrow marks on the dipstick. 4. If the oil level is low, add chaincase oil. Do not overfill. Recheck the oil level. 5. Reinstall the dipstick. Make sure the circular handle on the dipstick fits around the projection (B) on the chaincase to prevent accidental removal. The manufacturer suggests draining and filling. If operating the snowmobile under severe conditions or in wet snow, perform lubrication more frequently. Locate the grease fitting on the spindle housing (Figure 5).Wipe the grease fitting with a clean shop cloth to remove all traces of dirt. Remove the grease gun from the nipple and wipe the excess grease from the fitting and spindle. Repeat the procedure for the spindle on the other side of the snowmobile.
Wipe the grease fitting with a clean shop cloth to remove all traces of dirt and debris. Fit the end of a grease gun onto the grease fitting and pump grease into the steering arm. Remove the grease gun and wipe away all excess grease.
