Behind every myth there is always a truth, evident or hidden, that reflects the dreams, beliefs, and views of a particular culture, and art is the key to their understanding. Among all arts, tattooing in particular is one that remains true to the roots of a people, and this is especially the case in Polynesia, where it is deeply related and interconnected to everyday life. Gemori has studied Polynesian art and symbolism for twenty years, and through Polynesian designs he creates beautiful, rich, and meaningful tattoos. His designs are published on TattooTribes.com and appear in specialized magazines. When not designing, he writes books on Polynesian tattoos to foster understanding and appreciation of this beautiful form of art.Full content visible, double tap to read brief content. 0 out of 5 stars The only thing is, I’m as pale as paper with natural red hair. I want to show pride in my heritage, but living in Texas, there aren’t that many reliable Polynesian artists. I bought this book to get better insight on how to style my tattoo. If I can find inspiration on how I want my tattoo to look, I can sketch it out, so then all the tattoo artist will have to do is clean it up and help me adjust the design to fit my body. This book is informative, with specific details, and has the traditional bold Polynesian style. If these tattoos are your thing, I highly recommend a copy of this.I had a subscription to Phil's online dictionary (tahititataou) several years ago, and with all due respect to Phil, I disagree with his review that this book is simply a copy of his web site or that it is only for tourists. There is information on Phil's website that is not in this book and vice versa. For the most relevant material, this book covers most of what Phil's website covers. It explains the importance of tatau in polynesian culture, it explains the symbolism, it explains how one might go about selecting symbols, and it provides case studies. The latter, case studies, shows example tataus and breaks them down into the individual symbols. Phil's site does this too but not as well in my opinion. The one thing that Phil's site provides that is rather useful is a list of names and contact info for well known top polynesian tattooists around the world. My only three criticisms for this ebook are: 1. Table of contents do not let you jump quickly to the chapters. 2. Although it describes how one might go about designing one's tatau it does not mention a more important method- which is what you would really experience if you went to a polynesian tattooist. The tattooist will not usually ask you what specific symbols you want.

Instead the tattooist will interview you and draw by hand his interpretation of what you tell them directly on your skin (no flash, just freehand). Then with your approval he will begin the tattooing. The tattooist chooses the symbols, not you. You and the tattooist enter a trust relationship and afterwards you will find that the outcome is even better than you could have imagined. I believe both Phil's website and this book underestimates how well a skilled tattooist can design something that is so much more aesthetically pleasing than you can. 3. The book is an advertising tool for its own website. But considering the low cost of the ebook and the amount of information received, I think the advertising in the book is tolerable. Overall for the amount of money you pay for the ebook, it is well worth it. I can understand why Phil is concerned. He charges significantly more for a subscription, but not for substantially more information. I'm sorry Phil but I'm just being honest. Your website introduced me to the beauty of polynesian tattooing, but I think overall this book gives you better value for the money spent. Some of my family is from the Melanesian islands, in particular Fiji and papua New guinea. As its hard to find traditional designs from these islands unless I go there, I am settling for some common oceanic tribal designs to create my tattoo. This book was extremely helpful and will guide me with creating my own unique life story telling tattoo.I just with they had more and covered more meanings, but overall really great. Helped me to design my own tattoo with meaning, rather than some generic design. If you have a Polynesian tattoo it can help you understand some of the symbols. I don’t like that it is so small book. They could have elaborated more. But it is a goo start.

You can use this book before or after you get your tattoo to help gain knowledge on what you want to getOver all, a decent primer for those curious about Polynesian designs and their meanings. The text is large and easy to read, and concepts are very simplified. Don't expect to be an expert, but this book proves to be a good first step to understanding the culture and meaning behind various Polynesian elements of tattoo.I'm currently designing my own tradtional hawaiian tattoo and this is helping me so much. How to incorprate what you want into the tattoo (i.e. like if you want to represent family, what symbol to use). I would definatly reccomend this book. This book is very informative and helping him devide the direction he wants to.go with his additional tattoos. And I have to say I found it intriguing. The way some of the forms have developed is beautiful in its simplicity. The author warns that there may be variations to the interpretations depending on which Polynesian Island you ask. But the general meanings are fab. The way these various symbols then interweave into intricate, meaningful tattoos is amazing. I really like how these are described and then illustrated. I may even get a tat of my own!It looks like a teenagers school project where they have tried to fill as many pages as possible with as little information as you can get away with. That being said the information is concise, informative and just what you need (If not well drawn) when researching a tattoo of this nature. I bought the Kindle version a month or so ago but needed something I could thumb through and maybe turn down pages on. As it is I have room to draw, make notes even make my own drawings in the edges. As far as the quality of the book and the amount of information contained this book should not cost more than ?5.50. If you are looking for quick explanations with large mediocre drawings where you do not need to wear glasses then this is a useful book. Just don't expect VFM.

Polynesia is a subregion of Oceania, comprising of a large grouping of over 1,000 islands scattered over the central and southern Pacific Ocean, within a triangle that has New Zealand, Hawaii and Easter Island as the corners. The people who inhabit the islands of Polynesia are termed Polynesians and they share many similar traits including language, culture and beliefs. Polynesian languages may actually vary slightly from each other, or even a great deal, depending on the distance between the groups of islands and the frequency of their contacts. There are some words which are basically the same throughout all Polynesian languages, reflecting the deepest core of all Polynesian cultures.

Two emblematic ones are moana (ocean) and mana (spiritual force, energy). It’s interesting to note how similar these two words are and this should not be a surprise once we understand the relation between Polynesian cultures and the ocean. The ocean guarantees life. It’s also the place of birth and rest. It means abundance, prosperity and protection, being as vital to man as the air we breathe. Polynesian tattoos reflect this in a strong way. Be it in traditional style with more stylized and geometrical patterns only, or in modern style (more figurative, like the style presented in this book), sea creatures play a great part in such tattoos. Sharks, mantas, bonitos, sea urchins.Polynesian tattoos thus become a way to tell stories about their owners (to the extent of becoming a figurative identity card in the case of Maori face tattooing), or a way to give them strength, protection or powers from the bond created with other creatures. Another important element to be considered is represented by Aumakuas. An Aumakua is an entity having supernatural powers (usually a deified ancestor or a spirit), which appears to men usually in the form of an animal, to give them advice, omens and sometimes punishments. In the case of deified ancestors, families will maintain in time a special relation to their specific animals, which can often be sharks, turtles, rays or other sea creatures. The attitude towards Aumakuas varies greatly from island to island: some regard tattooing their own aumakua as a good omen and a guarantee of protection, whilst others consider them tapu (sacred, but also forbidden) and therefore avoid having them tattooed on their bodies. The role of Aumakuas is not so different from the totemic animals of Native Americans. They bring messages and guide and protect us. We must learn their lesson and respect them in order to preserve the bond with them and be protected.

Respect for Nature and her creatures plays an important role in Polynesian cultures and so do balance and union to all that surrounds us. All this must be taken into consideration when preparing a Polynesian inspired design. For a strictly traditional design a native tafuga (tattoo master) should be addressed since the old way of tattooing gets handed from master to disciple and involves far more knowledge than what could be incorporated into a book. Traditional styles closer to the supposed Lapita origins consist mainly of straight lines and rely heavily on the repetition of a few basic patterns, the meaning of which is often forgotten, or at least very controversial. Nice examples of these geometrical styles are found in Samoan and Hawaiian tattoo traditions, or in tattoos from Palau, Fiji, Tonga, just to name a few. Maori and Marquesan tattoos instead are rich with rounded elements and share a more figurative You've reached the end of this preview. Sign up to read more.
