In truth, those manuals have have pretty lousy pictures, and not very detailed schematics, and have proven all but useless for a number of little things I need to figure out. Not only in their clarity, but also you seem to have chosen just the right things to photograph and illustrate.I’ve never touched anything mechanical in my life and with your manual and only two weeks time I now have a running bike.I’ve never worked on a motorcycle before, but with your workshop manual I was able to remove and rebuild the engine, and transmission, and fully rebuild the carburetor myself. Again, let me say the Cyclepedia manual is great and because of the detailed information I was confident enough to break it down, put it back together and get it to work correctly afterwards.I followed the instructions and the new starter is installed and working perfectly. I am very satisfied with this service and I saved BIG money buying a used part and doing the repair myself. Cyclepedia is a great service.As a professional auto tech, I’ve seen good and bad manuals. CR I’ve got a Ninja EX250 that doesn’t have a CDI box, but I’ve got a good CDI from a 1992 Ninja EX500. The CDI off the EX500 has 11 wires going to it, and the 250 only has 7 wires.

” Not only is there a difference in the number and function of the wires, but the timing advance is different. The EX250 reaches its full advance of 42 degrees at 4,500 rpm, while the EX500 advances to 37.5 degrees at 10,000 rpm. Also be aware that the Ignitor box from the early 1986 and 1987 EX250s will not work on the 1992 model as the earlier version uses an analog type ignition and the later years have a digital system. These ignition boxes are very reliable, so if you find one on e-bay or at your local salvage yard for a decent price, I would not hesitate to buy it, in all probability it is still good. It sports a lateral aluminum frame, a different fairing (designed to make it look sportier), larger 17-inch wheels, an adjustable rear shock absorber, adjustable brake and clutch levers, a smaller drive sprocket, computer-controlled timing advance, and a revised electrical system.The EX250-J model is known as the Ninja 250R worldwide, regardless of market.The U.S. -J model uses dual carburetors like the -F model, but the European, Brazilian and Thai models have fuel injection. The wheels were increased in size to 17 inches, the front suspension was improved, and the brake rotors were replaced with a larger petal shape. On the carbureted version, a fuel gauge was added in place of the temperature gauge. With the additional and redesigned equipment, the EX250-J suffered a 10 kg (22 lb) increase in wet weight over its predecessors.ABS is available as an option.You can help by adding to it. ENGINE OIL Use the proper grade of oil for the lowest temperature expected before the next oil change. If it is necessary to add oil and oil is not available, use an oil certified for diesel engines. Acceptable diesel engine oil designations include CE, CF, CF-4 and CG- 4. The preferred viscosities for the diesel engine oils, in descending order, are 20W-50, 15W-40 and 10W-40. The ignition module is mounted behind the electrical panel.
It computes the spark advance for proper ignition timing based on sensor input (from CKP, MAP and BAS) and regulates the low-voltage circuits between battery and ignition coil. The scan tool can access the information received by and stored in the ignition module. The ignition module contains all of the solid state components used in the ignition system. The dwell time for the ignition coil is also calculated in the microprocessor and is dependent upon battery voltage. The programmed dwell is an added feature to keep battery drain to a minimum and yet give adequate spark duration at all speeds. (The ignition module has added protection against transient voltages, continuous reverse voltage protection, and damage due to jump starts.) The ignition module is fully enclosed in a polyurethane material to protect it from vibration, dust, water or oil. This unit is a non-repairable item. If it fails, it must be replaced. The crank position sensor (CKP) is located in the front left side of the crankcase. Readings are taken off the 30 teeth on the left side flywheel (two teeth are missing to establish a reference point). The CKP generates an AC signal which is sent to the ignition module where it is used to reference engine position (TDC) and speed. The MAP sensor is located on top of the intake manifold. The MAP sensor monitors the intake manifold pressure (vacuum) and sends the information to the ignition module where the module adjusts the timing advance curve for optimum performance. If the vehicle lean angle exceeds 45 for more than one second, the ignition system is shut off. Once the sensor is tripped, the motorcycle must be uprighted, turned off and then on again before the engine can be restarted. Front and rear coils fire each spark plug independently (one cylinder at a time - no wasted spark). The ignition system gives a spark near top dead center for starting.Engine Turns Over But Does Not Start 1. Fuel tank empty or fuel supply valve turned off. 2.
Fouled spark plugs. 3. Engine flooded with gasoline as a result of over use of enrichener. 4. Vacuum hose to automatic fuel supply valve disconnected, leaking, or pinched. 5. Discharged battery, loose or broken battery terminal connections. 6. Engine lubricant too heavy (winter operation). Starts Hard 1. Spark plugs in bad condition or have improper gap or are partially fouled. 2. Spark plug cables in bad condition. 3. Battery nearly discharged. 4. Loose wire connection at one of the battery terminals, coil, or ignition module connector. 5. Carburetor controls not adjusted correctly. 6. Water or dirt in fuel system and carburetor. 7. Intake air leak. 8. Fuel tank vent hose and vapor valve plugged, or carburetor fuel line closed off, restricting fuel flow. 9. Enrichener valve inoperative. 10. Engine lubricant too heavy (winter operation).
