He is editor of the International Journal for Multiscale Computational Engineering. Ted Belytschko, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Northwestern University, Evanston, IL Ted Belytschko's main interests lie in the development of computational methods for engineering problems. He has developed explicit finite element methods that are widely used in crashworthiness analysis and virtual prototyping. He obtained his B.S. and Ph.D. at Illinois Institute of Technology in 1965 and 1968, respectively. He has been at Northwestern since 1977 where he is currently Walter P. The authors clearly present and derive the FEM as the solution of the weak form of the governing differential equations. They do not simply string together one matrix after the other as in many german books on the topic. Es ist zwar eine Version, die auf 1000 Knoten beschrankt ist (reicht nur fur ziemlich kleine Probleme), aber mit Hilfe der Anleitung am Ende des Buches lassen sich ein paar Modelle erstellen. Wer sehr leicht Zugang zu sehr komplexen mathematischen Zusammenhangen findet oder sich bereits mit den Grundlagen der FEM vertraut gemacht hat und spater sich nicht nur mit der reinen Anwendung der Methode beschaftigen will, empfehle ich allerdings ein tiefgreifenderes Buch. Man kann naturlich auch mit diesem Buch anfangen und dann sein Wissen mit anderen Lekturen erweitern. Was in diesem Buch z.B. fehlt: Wie ein fertiges FE-Programm konkret aufgebaut ist und wie die FE-Gleichungen konkret gelost werden (konnen). Das Buch beschrankt sich auf kleine Verformungen (also lineare Spannungsanalyse) und auf verschiedene Materialien wird ebenfalls nicht eingegangen. Die Vernetzung fallt insgesamt auch etwas oberflachlich aus.
