Previous: Might not be worth the hundred bucks you save over a regular pool supply replacement unless you do your own wrenching. They look great but they are Chinese secondary market replicas with not so local market available parts if repair is needed. Mine went 6 months and began popping its internal breaker in a looping style. I got referred to Columbia Pool Products for warranty. These Columbia folks seem to be nice people but the whole process had me circulating my pool with a engine water pump for a month. Round one I got some used bench motors replacement, which don get me wrong was just fine with me. That is if it worked. It arrive set for 110V and didn't work at that, brought it to the local electrical bench repair shop in town to learn the 220v circuit is defunct in this unit and not industry typical parts can be used. In addition the spindle thread to the pump is not cross over compatible with typical US oem used motors. Columbia DID finally send me a brand new one but as luck had ot they packed it in a vertical type box where it gets slammed down in delivery with no foam on that side and it crushed the rear can cover and the internal capacitor. Fortunately I could salvage the parts from the previous failed one to make the unit work again. Now i have two failed motors packed in a box waiting a revised label from Columbia for the last month. But after numerous emails and faxes I have heard nothing more. They seem overwhelmed.It was clearly not the quality of my old Pentair 1.5 hp challenger pump. The screw terminals for the connection are iffy. They did not want to tighten so I used the spade connectors which worked fine. The pipe threads seem to be not quite standard. Screwing the fitting in three quarters of the way easily by hand and they still wiggle a lot. Use a good amount of Teflon paste sealant (not tape) and screw it in until it seats (that's not hard to do). It worked right off the bat. It's fairly quiet.
I went to vacuum the pool right after the install. The suction is bad for a 1.5 HP pump, it would not even pick up leaves. I'm keeping it only because I can't wait for a proper name brand replacement (pool party on the weekend).The motor started making an awful noise a few days ago, and after numerous emails, I was informed that the limited warranty does not cover corrosion of the bearing. First, it is a sealed bearing, in a water tight sealed pump. Moisture does not touch the bearing in anyway to corrode it, and a quality product would not have a bearing wear out in under 5 months. I would strongly discourage anyone from purchasing this product due to this issue, and would not recommend this seller due to the fact that they do not stand behind what they sell. I will say that they were polite in their responses to my emails, but looked for every reason they could to not replace the product. From faulty installation (I had to send pictures to prove the wiring was correct), to corroded bearings. Due to this, I feel it is my responsibility to warn others that may be looking to purchase this of my experience.This is a very poor quality pump. Don't get me wrong I tried to do proper research on the product before purchasing but given the no name branding I could only find it on inyopool.com. Which did offer replacement parts so I felt confident in the purchase. It arrived in a timely manner which is the only good thing I can say about it. I had professional pool installers come in and install it which they were able to do with ease. They primed the pump and switched it on. Immediately it was loud and leaking water from the seal that connects the motor to the wet part of the pump (impeller and basket). They checked it out and found the impeller came broken.
After some back and forth with the seller (they wanted me to pay return shipping) I was able to get a replacement impeller (to save on shipping cost and having to pay again to have it removed) unfortunately the same thing happened. The cheap thin plastic on the impeller could not withstand the suction of the motor and kept breaking. It seemed like a great choice to save money but by the time you add in all the wasted labor costs I should've gone with the trusted pentair. Save yourself some time and just go with the better quality product.I paid 3 times as much for big name H and it didn't make 3 seasons so we will see how this does but for the price I can by 3 of them.Our pool is in ground 10-15000 gal. With pool sweep. Time will tell if it lasts as long as name brand pumps. I'll give it 5 stars if it does.Very disappointing.This year it started to stop and start every 10 mins. I was advise the capacitor or o-ring is going so the pump is over heating which is causing it to shut off. I requested these parts. Time to wait and see what type of service i get.
