Thomas J Moore 3.0 out of 5 stars Not a universal remote I have been a loyal Control4 customer through multiple homes and many years but I do not believe they are even relevant anymore. I have been moving my homes over to Sonos with independent roku boxes and there simple remotes at each TV. If you have a Control4 system and need another remote you will still need your dealer to program this, it must be connected to your existing Control4 system. I have not had luck with them lasting very long. It seems like the dealers are drying up and blowing away, getting service is becoming a nightmare so I don’t think I would start off with this type of a system. I don’t use Apple TV but I hear it is pretty amazing.

I feel the dealer installed systems are thing of the past for the average person. I truly believe smart TVs and all of the other options are so much easier and less you have a huge mansion and want to automate a bunch of stuff these don’t really make sense. It works well but you’re dependent on the installer. If you change internet service providers, you have to have the installer come back and log you in to your own internet system. That’s a big drawback. It is very proprietary and requires a seasoned pro to fix. I live over 100 miles west of Denver. I would recommend only if you’re willing to pay these fees. Personally I would stick with a television remote: in my case a Samsung. Works great. Control 4 is very proprietary. Be prepared to pay theses fees. You’ll be happy then.My dealer never told me that I would need to pay hourly rate to make this expensive POS anything but a brick. It doesn't even recognize its own rechargeable battery until your installer activates it. Their arguments for locking it down are bull. Anyone with half a brain could come up with basic program, or spend money one time to have installer program it. You would then save that program and upload it to device any time you wanted. But you could then program yourself or modify original program. This system is really designed to make dealers do anything to get you to buy this piece of crap because they own you after that. This company should subject to a class action lawsuit - how many consumers buy this without being told how useless it is unless you continue to spend money on it. You don't really own this device - your dealer owns it forever. I bought a Logitech emote that does 90 of what this Control 4 junk can do and I don't have to pay someone every time I add a new device to my smart home network or home theater.Don't get hoodwinked into installing this system in your home. It's a disaster.

And I understand why C4 creates a protected market place for its dealer ecosystem. No hate here -- everyone needs to earn a living, and knowledge and competency has value. I'd love to be able to repurpose the SR-250 remote. I think it's a good piece of kit, and was wondering if I might be able to reverse engineer the protocol to use it for my own purposes. Assume that I can get access to a version of Composer Pro. C4 dealer here. Unless there's a cracked version out there somewhere, you'll need an active C4 dealer login to be able to activate Composer Pro ( CP requires activation every 30 days). There's no way around that that I know of.

To the best of my knowledge, there's no second life outside of C4 for SR remotes, but that doesn't mean it's not possible. Sorry I can't be more helpful. I have a C4 Controller, too, as well as an IO Expander. They all came with the apartment. I did a bit of googling and there appears to be a patch for CP available out there in Torrent-landia. I'm on a Mac, so I guess I'll have to fire up a VM to get it running and see if I can sniff out the packets. I'd like to have an RPI be able to understand the controls so that I can use the SR-250 with HASS. All in all, C4 makes some very high quality kit (hence my post here). It will deifnitely be the way that I would suggest to any friend who isn't one or all of the above. If a friend were to go the RPI route, I'd end up having to support them. First, you would need a working system so you could sniff out the zigbee packets. Second, you'd have to hope it isn't encrypted. Although this isn't as big as a roadblock as it seems since the remote appears to have ready JTAG access underneath the battery. Third, you would then need to reverse engineer what I can only assume are a ton of different packet types that are received and sent to the remote. Finally, you would then need to design a device (e.g. a receiver) that could act when it received commands from the remote. I've done this before, it isn't as easy it sounds. Although, you may be able to use OpenHAB or something as the ecosystem that powers this. Personally, it's probably easiest to search around google on how program a Control4 system. I'd also consider just reverse engineering the firmware on the remote using the JTAG interface. That is probably easier than intercepting the Zigbee signals. Do you get some kind of response. That's where you want to start. Or just SSH into the box. It's just Linux. Probably uses the default password. Button presses are reported back in a single message packet. On screen stuff is tougher, but it isn't that hard to get to work.

Saw some projects to do zigbee sniffing, so I'll check those out. All rights reserved Back to top. Free shipping ! Rather than utilise a custom button our new Find My Remote driver makes mapping this action to a Control4 touchscreen prettier. This driver will only work on Control4 OS 2.9 and above. Just select the remote in the drivers properties and the duration.Lost your remote? Now you have a pretty button to make it beep so you can find it. Why doesn't my remote beep immediately. Remotes take upto a minute to check in. As such it will not beep immediately and will take upto a minute to start beeping. Once beeping has started you can cancel it by pressing any button on the remote. Factory reset it, paired it, and viola it’s sending catchall commands I can parse. Being able to use 48 buttons to trigger different things is pretty cool. I also picked up a couple of the new Harmony Ultimate Home. None of it quite integrates like I’d like (I’d really like C4 UI and flexibility I can program myself, which is what I think you’re after too). Personal opinion, there’s a real market here for someone to create a C4 like platform with customer programmability. I am doing it now with a custom driver I wrote to handle inbound requests.

But since ST can’t parse large responses, I need a better device discovery process to add C4 devices into ST. Bad news is the control surfaces in ST leave a ton to be desired to use any of the devices. But I’m not holding my breath. The fundamental flaw with C4 is the dealer model vs DIY. C4 will be passed up eventually by ST and the others, or absorbed by a big player (MS, Google, Apple, etc.) I picked it up and it integrates seamlessly with ST. If (like you suggest) I can really add more of the Control4 devices I have to ST (Really hoping to get their thermostats working), I’ll be in great shape! I have put on hold further integration until I see the hub v2. I’m hoping to find some time to start logging the pairing process more and the initial clusters reported by ST during the pairing process for more devices. If it paired, you should get an “unknown” device in the IDE. Then you can have the IDE hook up to this unknown device and try sending discover packets or other zigbee commands and see what it responds with. I’m finding it amazing that I can’t do the most simple things with a single remote. I really want to be able to use a single remote to do nothing more than this: I’m very interested to know if this C4 remote has a device type that suites these cases. Of course, I have no interest in actually deploying a C4 system, but the remote seems useful. So this is not viable for the above. I can probably assist here if needed. Used it for controlling my sonos. However, when the battery died, the device lost its firmware and had to repair it up to control4 to push the firmware out. So this is just not a viable solution at the moment. Unless you know how to restore the firmware without being a dealer for control4, this remote will not work as a standalone device. Thanks for the clarification. Well what a bummer. Explore 0 Description Important Note: Control 4 Products Must Be Professionally Installed.

Update my browser now By Dennis Burger The new Control4 SR-260 System Remote, though, as its name implies, is an incremental upgrade over the company’s previous flagship wand-style remote, the SR-250. If my calculations are correct, that change in numbering indicates a roughly four-percent upgrade over the previous model. And at first glance you’d think that figure sounds about right. Because it doesn’t really look like much has changed. But the ring motif hasn’t disappeared from the remote altogether. The buttons were too cramped. Their layout made no sense. All of those buttons not only have more room to breathe now, but they’re also much larger, with a much more logical arrangement: the play button right at the center of the ring, with pause below, skip buttons to the left and right, scan buttons just above those, and the DVR button (probably my most-used button after the pause key) situated right at the top. Aside from that, though, I have to admit that the way I use the System Remote hasn’t changed all that drastically, except in one respect that I’ll touch upon in a sec. Operating the lights is the same. Working the locks and checking my security cameras is the same. Tweaking the schedule on my thermostat works no differently.

Indeed, the new SR-260 even feels pretty much just like the old SR-250 in terms of ergonomics and overall layout. I have to admit, though, that the new screen built into the SR-260 has been a way bigger bonus for me than I expected it to be. Gone is the amber OLED screen of old. In its place is a larger, brighter, higher-resolution screen with colors that can be customized with hues like Screaming Green and Wild Watermelon and 17 other selections (not all of them quite so saucy). That seems like such a little thing on paper, but the customization option just makes the System Remote feel less generic, and more like a thing that’s tailored specifically to my tastes. No more running out of juice right in the middle of a movie. And no more digging through menus to see how much longer I can make it before needing to slap a new set of batteries into the back of the remote. In fact, I could have easily just opened Control4’s Composer Pro software, dragged the driver for the SR-260 into my home theater (after upgrading to OS 2.7, that is), picked a new color for my screen, and I would have been super happy with the upgrade, since all of the device programming is updated automatically. Assuming you do your OS upgrades remotely, you could set up a new SR-260 for your clients in, like, five minutes from the time you walk through the door. Those, it turns out, are custom buttons, which can be programmed independently for each activity. In my case, for example, when I’m watching my OPPO Blu-ray player, one of the custom buttons acts as an input control for the player itself, so I can switch to the Roku Stick plugged into its MHL port without having to navigate to the home screen and scroll through icons.Given the two-way nature of the Control4 system, our remotes are intimately intertwined and constantly in sync, so any input changes she makes with the old SR-250 are instantly reflected on my SR-260. That means there’s no more fighting over the remote.

And any little black box that can affect that sort of dramatic lifestyle change deserves major kudos in my book. But little changes make a big difference. The new transport control layout in particular makes operating the remote by touch alone so much easier. The form factor remained the same, which means that the remote is a bit bricklike. Some nice sculpted finger rests on the back would have made the unit easier to hold. But that’s a minor complaint. England and Wales company registration number 2008885.
