Very low output impedance means speakers are driven properly and the amp just gets out of the way, changing what you hear depending on the preamp, source or recording fed it. Love 'em to bits and I keep bridged pairs as well as a 'stereo one' for headphones (take care using headphones as there's no padding on the output). Ken.It is one of the most classic pro amplifiers of all time, being used in just about every radio station, recording studio and remote truck for use with nearfield monitors or other small speakers. You'd see this anyplace small speakers needed to be driven, as well as to power the speakers in the station's lobby.

The headphone jack is wired directly to the speaker outputs, so it has zero output impedance, and the D-75 is so quiet you're good to go. It's silent with the HD 650, and has more than enough output to blow them out. Dedicate this amplifier to headphone use if you want to. They compare input to output, and light the LED if anything is even slightly distorted. Therefore it's easy to push this amplifier and your system to get the maximum real-world power of which this amplifier is capable, regardless of your program material or speakers. When I test in the lab, they light instantly and far faster than my lab analyzer lets me know anything's amiss. They make testing this amplifier fast! They come on at about 50 mW and get brighter and brighter as the level increases, and are always flickering along with your music. The IOC s are the best overload indicators in the business. They catch any instantaneous distortion, and light bright red long enough for you to see it. It's best to avoid the newer D-75A, even if it looks cooler in black. When they don't lie on top of each other, it's due to channel imbalance. When they do lie on top of each other, the trace turns blue. I used a 120 VAC supply voltage. This amplifier is 38 years old, and works swell. If yours hums, change the way or where it's mounted to minimize it. Whatever goes in is what comes out, and if there is any sort of distortion or other problem, the IOC lights to warn you before it becomes audible. As a professional product, it lives to serve by faithfully reproducing what it's fed, not trying to make music sound even better than it is. You'll hear all the inner detail and details like footsteps behind the stage. If you want accurate sound cheap, get one of these. Crown is serious about common-mode rejection; there is an internal trim for a technician to null it out for perfection.

This is much better than jock-strapping a balanced input for use with an unbalanced input as you have to do with most professional amplifiers. The speakers do not mute. It has no feet. It will get hot if you wrap it in a blanket; let it breath. It loves being rack-mounted, in which case the head conducts through the rack mount. There are diagrams in the manual. With the IOC LEDs, you always know if you're distorting or not. You can use all the power this amplifier has, regardless of load, and not have to play it softer to stay safe. Unlike consumer amplifiers, play it as loud as you want, and so long as the IOC LEDs don't light, you're not at the edge. A 100W amplifier only goes about one volume control click louder, and with the IOC LEDs you can use all of this amplifier's power without fear of distortion. I have this rolling around on another message board too but I'm trying to see if anyone is specifically experienced with the D60; seems like the D75 is the common one, I think the follow-up to the D60 which at this point is probably 45 years old.

I do have the service manual and I was about to start throwing parts at it, including the main filter caps (10000uf screw-terminal type). The only problem is going to be parts costing way more than the unit cost me, but I have a feeling it's probably worth fixing. If anyone has any technical knowledge on these, it would be much appreciated. Plus they are cheaper than the large caps, IF they are OK.Plus they are cheaper than the large caps, IF they are OK. But yes I plan to order the bridge rectifier. And a bunch of fuses.I have to wonder though, if I can replace the rotary power switch with any switch 'technically' if it fits.More than likely they are shorted.I figure the odds to be about fifty-fifty that simply doing replacing those caps will make it work again..And if not, then at least the other stuff you might have to replace won't be destroyed by bad caps. (And caps are cheap.). I ordered several bridge rectifiers in my recent order, but the large filter caps were a bit pricey so I held off for now until I can see if the smaller cheap stuff makes a difference. I figure if I blow a second bridge rectifier then I'll get new caps in there. The only thing that is concerning me is that it's getting past the fuse and then popping after 10-15 seconds. I am just hoping there is nothing wrong with the transformer. I do get 119v on the taps coming off of it so it seems legit. It gets plenty hot though.Kinda didn't even think of that. The last time I did that, the caps were almost cheaper than the shipping!. Most common capacitor deterioration is losing electrolyte which might increase PS ripple voltage, not exactly a threat to power devices. JRI know that. However, I figure even if I got a working one, I'd probably throw new parts at it anyway so I'm telling myself it's worth it (if not for the curiosity more so now)Or did you mean to remove the caps? Sorry.Or did you mean to remove the caps? Sorry. What did you mean by C-E?What did you mean by C-E?

A common failure for power transistors is a dead short between collector and emitter. If those are metal (TO-3) packages, the collector is connected to the metal can. (the two mounting screws). The base and emitter are the other two leads in the sockets.Testing a known good transistor IF available will help understand what kind of reading to expect. Again this is with the amp OFF. JRThe ohms scale will identify shorted power transistors just fine. Lets not try to confuse the OP by making this more complicated than it need be. JR Apparently even using the quote function wasn't clear enough. Back in the day I would check diode junctions with the old Simpson 260 VOM on ohms scale, but this is TMI likely to confuse the newbies, and others who may be easily confused. I have not replaced any parts yet. I pulled all of the power transistors out and tested them on the Peak meter. All but one have good Hfe (605-90ish) but one is showing 12 Hfe. In testing germanium trannies, this would stick out to me as a faulty transistor, but not 'bad' per se. I put them all back in, resoldered wires and re-fused. Tried power again. This time, it powers on, didn't blow a fuse. Nothing smoking.

Plugged in my test speakers and get a loud hum, and that wave-like voltage buzz. I can't think of how else to describe it. It will not pass audio signal. So, I'm not sure what I did to change anything other than freshen up solder joints, but I'm further than I was. I have a new bridge rectifier on order but I still need to order caps.Memorials, RIPs and Obituaries Hosted by Nimbus Hosting. We are Happy to Help our Customers! I took a look around that guy's site. Wow! He's a little intense. I think I'll wait a day or so in case one of the guys here has a schematic, and if not, I'll get one from that site. I believe there are at least two versions of the D60, but they ought to be pretty similar - and may share the preamp section of the DC300. I seem to recall seeing some D60 without level controls and knobs on the front panel. The one I had in the 70s had the knobs. I think I've got a link to a sound company that has a lot of schematics. I'd be happy to scan the DC300 stuff for you if you think it might be relevant. Let us know what you find out. Unofficially, of course. So many frequencies, so little time.

This D60 is functioning, but with lower output on one channel. Noticably so. I took it to my local amp guru, Jim Flynn, and he had a look but said that he really needed a schematic to track down the problem. Not a simple fix. I was thinking of selling it, but if I can't get it fixed I may use it, as is, to run the sub cab in my home stereo. As a side note, Jim is the head tech for ProMix in Las Vegas. He's a tube amp nut from way back. In fact, when Andy Z made the T shirts, I ordered an extra one for Jim. He got a laugh out of it. Definitely believes in the 'no hack butcher' theory. I gave him details of this site. Hopefully he'll drop by. He'd be a great asset. And a cool guy, too. Hard to beat having the schematic, though. That should help us out. The guy only wants a few bucks for them. My brother just handed me this thing and said it might work or it might have one bad channel or a nasty hum or something. We used to use it as a headphone amp in the studio. I seem to recall it sucked, but maybe that was the times we were doing heavy metal bands with six pairs of cans hanging on it. Anybody know the power rating of this thing. I guess I'll do the SG technique for now--compare the two channels. It was fine when I used it to drive the monitors in my studio. Or like SG said to drive some tweets in a small tri-amped system. If I get a schematic, I'll let you know. The guy that Dude put me onto likes to trade, so I've been sorting out a couple of things he might get a kick out of. He has about four schematics I'm interested in, so I'm hoping to trade him for all of them. Apart from th D60, he has a Silvertone and some Gretsch amps schematics that I'd like to get. Thanks ! So many frequencies, so little time. Thanks a bunch! You can make full use of your IC-150 while operating the power amplifier at less than full gain. Utilizing the well known Fletcher-Munson curves, both low and high frequencies are emphasized. You can continually mix the two channels from normal stereo through mono to reverse stereo. Great flexibility and great for headphone listening!. Two massive specially designed heat sinks and the entire chassis are utilized to prevent thermal fatigue, the predator of most high power amplifiers. All components of the circuitry must meet the highest criteria for long term performance. All resistors in critical areas are 1 tolerance. All integrated circuits and transistors are put through 100 electrical stress testing to avoid failure before assembly.

At a typical full output of 75 watts (8 ohms), IM has been measured by CROWN as 0.002. By implication, THD might be expected to be approximately 0.0005 which neither Crown nor we could legitimately measure. Power Output: At least 75 watts R.M.S. per channel into 8 ohms(both channels operating) 20-20,000Hz at rated distortion. All-aluminum construction with massive chassis. CROWN did just that!! The new CROWN D-60 is the same price as its predecessor, the D-40 and that price has not changed since 1969 - our way of combatting inflation!! The D-60 amplifier is ideally designed for a beginning system and is most compatible with electrostatic headphones.Since quad sound is becoming a major consideration for many audio buyers, the D-60 should play an important part in your plans. Heat Sinking: The entire amplifier is used as a heat sink. Front panel: extrusion acts as a heat sink along with the chassis covers. Controls: Two input level controls on front panel with power switch and pilot light.

, a low-pass filter should be placed on the input. While practically- obtainable RF input levels will not damage the amplifier, they may cause burn-out of tweeters or other sensitive loads, activate the amplifier's protective systems, or cause general overload in the controlled-slewing-rate stage of the amp (which is employed to provide RF overload protection). The following filters are recommended for such applications. A common form of loop (possibly resulting in hum in the output) is a pair of input cables whose area is subjected to a magnetic hum field, (n practice, both cables should lie together along their length, and away from the power transformer. Tying the input and output grounds together may also form a ground loop. A third problem (with input and output grounds together, as in testing or metering) is feedback oscillation, from load current flowing in the loop. In industrial use, even the AC power line may provide this feedback path. Proper grounding, and isolation of inputs of common AC line devices is good practice. Refer to Section 4.2, par. 5 for testing precautions. An extremely common form of this problem is encountered when using electrostatic loudspeakers or any other kind of load that is joined to the AC power mains. Capacitive coupling through the load's supplies may allow the amplifier's output to be fed through the AC mains and into the grounds of input equipment resulting in a system oscillation. How to solve some problems To combat the problem, first try reversing the speaker leads on all channels if possible. If this does not solve the problem, try grounding the power amplifier to the AC ground with its 3 wire plug. (A ground loop may result through an FM tuner with an earth-grounded antenna system when deploying the 3 wire plug. The use of.005uF disc capacitors in series with the FM antenna leads will eliminate this problem.
