In other DAWs, this requires the use of complicated MIDI program changes and key switches. This overcomes one of the limitations of MIDI, where such controllers normally affect the entire channel (For example, all notes of a chord are equally affected by a pitch bend message). This made it possible for third-party software programmers to create and sell virtual instruments for Cubase. A new version of VST, VST3, was introduced with Steinberg's Cubase 4 which introduced improved handling of automation and audio output, native sidechaining, and many other features. Cubase 6 included VSTs such as HALion Sonic SE, Groove Agent ONE, LoopMash 2 and VST Amp Rack.Initially Cubase, which featured only MIDI, and which was available on the Atari ST, Macintosh and Windows.It added Virtual Studio Technology (VST) support, a standard for audio plug-ins, which led to a plethora of third-party effects, both freeware and commercial. Cubase VST was only for Macintosh and Windows; Atari support had been effectively dropped by this time, despite such hardware still being a mainstay in many studios. Cubase VST was offering a tremendous amount of power to the home user, but computer hardware took some time to catch up. By the time it did, VST's audio editing ability was found to be lacking, when compared with competitors such as Pro Tools DAE and Digital Performer MAS.This version required much relearning for users of older Cubase versions. However, once the new methods of working were learned, the improvements in handling of audio and automation made for a more professional sequencer and audio editor.Early versions of Cubase VST did not have this ability. Cubase SX also featured real-time time-stretching and adjustment of audio tempo, much like Sonic Foundry 's ground-breaking ACID.Notable new features include 'control room', a feature designed to help create monitor mixes, and a new set of VST3 plug-ins and instruments.For instance, Cubase Elements 6 has a maximum of 48 audio track and 64 MIDI tracks and Cubase Artist 6 offer 64 audio and 128 MIDI tracks.Cubase for Atari was MIDI only and ran on the Atari 520ST and Atari 1040ST computers, provided they had 1 MB of RAM (the 520 with 1 MB of RAM is effectively a 1040 anyway). Many plug-ins, particularly those which run on DSP Cards such as UAD-1 or Powercore, cannot process their audio within a 1-sample time period and thus introduce extra latency into the system. Unchecked, this will cause some audio channels to end up out of sync with others. PDC checks all the various latencies introduced by such plug-ins and creates audio delay buffers to ensure that audio from all channels is correctly synchronized.It also allowed users to apply 'tempo anchors' to an imported audio file so it would sync to the tempo of the project regardless of the original tempo.This was because the tempo map it copied to the Audio file when musical mode was enabled was derived from the fixed tempo setting of the project rather than from the tempo track.Despite the caveats, having the ability to change the tempo of a musical piece and have the audio tracks follow this new tempo was an important ability in music production.To give the ability to import older Cubase VST projects and songs, Steinberg decided to make the prior Cubase SX3 and Cubase SL3 versions available as downloads.In general the GUI was darker than the prior version, Cubase SX3.The FXP (Preset) and FXB (Bank) files were discontinued along with the drop-down menu XML presets. Parameter Explanation Time This is the basic amount of delay applied to the signal. The larger the value, the richer the sound (up to a certain extent). For flanger types of effects, use the lower range of values.
Feedback This is the amount of output signal re-routed back to the input of the effect. For soft and wide chorus effects, keep this value low. For flanger type effects, raise this value. Width Sets the amount of variation in the delay of the signal. The larger the value, the more drastic the effect. This value should be bal- anced with the Time setting for optimal results. LFO Freq This is the speed of the LFO “sweep”. The larger the value, the faster sweep. Glimmer A low value gives a more “concentrated” sound, while higher values result in a more “animated” sound. Out Levl The stereo output level of the effect. It adds “ambience” or “room quality” to the sound. The relationship between the parameters is a little bit intricate, so we suggest you start out by selecting a Program as close to the desired result as possible and then modify the settings as desired. Espacial accepts a mono input only and is used as a Send Effect. Parameters Parameter Explanation Size Affects the apparent size of the simulated room. Width This parameter also affects the impression of the size and shape of the simulated room. It also affects the “density” and clearness of the reverb. Time The decay time of the reverberation. ER Start The start time of the Early Reflections - the first “echo” from the walls in a simulated room. ER Width Early Reflection “density” and clearness. When this parameter is fully raised, no Early Re- flections will be heard at all. ER Decay Determines the gradual attenuation of Early Reflections. ER Outp The level of Early Reflections in the Effect Output. Output Level The stereo output level of the effect. The Scopion uses a custom interface. Gain Scale This knob (at the bottom of the Scopion window) allows you to scale the waveform vertically. It is normally used as a Send Effect. The Stereo Echo has the following parameters: Parameter Explanation Delay1 The delay time for the left channel. Feedbck1 The delay feedback for the left channel.
Higher values result in a higher number of echo repeats. Link 1-2 Activating this switch turns the effect into a mono delay. When Link is on, only the left channel parameters will be available (Delay1, Feedback1, etc). Delay 2 The delay time for the right channel. Feedbck2 The delay feedback for the right channel. Del2 Bal This parameter determines how much of the left channel output is sent to the right channel input. When set to 0.0 (fully left), then none of the left channel output is added to the right channel input; when it is set to 1.0 ( fully right), the right input receives both its normal source and the complete output of the left channel. Volume L The output level of the left channel delay. Volume R The output level of the right channel delay. StereoWizard will give best result if you use “real” stereo material (as opposed to mono channels panned to different positions in the stereo image), but you could also apply stereo ambience or reverb to a mono signal, and then use StereoWizard to enhance the stereo width of the reverb. The Wiz- ard has the following parameters: Parameter Explanation Amount Higher values result in a greater stereo width. Normally, you should set this to values between 0.00 - 0.20; higher values can be used for special effects. Reverse Reverses the left and right channel. Use the Program pop-up to select one of ten Reverb Types: You can adjust the following parameters: Size This is the size of the simulated room. Changing this will affect the density and character of the reverb. If you have selected a Reverb Type where you can hear the individual “bounces” (Effect 1, Echoes, etc), raising the Size will increase the time between each “bounce”, like the time control on a delay effect. Decay This is the decay time for the reverb. The higher the value, the longer the reverb. Damp Raising this value will cause the high frequency contents of the reverb sound to die out quicker. This results in a softer, darker reverb.

Easy to read and understand, this is one of those books that sit right beside the DAW for those times you just need to know how to do something. I have read over 12 books that supposedly was written to help you learn Cubase SX3, but this is the only one that lived up to it's claims. The included CD is just 5 demos of the CSi Video tutorials, nothing big, just a video commercial, I bought the 3 part ASKVideo SX3 Tutorials, and they are the best.and I also checked out a lot of those also. Cubase SX3 is a huge, flexible product that does not eat up resources like the new Version 4 does.It guides you through the main Cubase features giving you an in depth knowledge. I give it 3 stars because after reading the book I read the Operation Manual and I found that the book is too much similar to the Operation manual. For learning the basic procedures I find the operation manual easier to follow, since it is more redundant and therefore easier to follow.There are still a number of places where terminology and abbreviations get particularly thick. That is, sometimes you are expected to know a lot of studio terminology. But these were not so common as to be terribly difficult.
