These scientists recognized, very early, that this technique provided a much higher signal to noise ratio, SNR, if compared to the regular way optical fibers were used: by axial illumination. However, despite this recognition, these pioneers abandoned their own unique concept and left the least travelled road. At the end, the task of championing this neglected technique befell upon this author who started his work at the same time these researchers published their first paper. For this reason, I can also be counted among its early pioneers. Despite side illumination’s simplicity, low cost and high SNR, it did not get much attention in its first 12 years. So, while the scientific community kept on developing devices using axial illumination, photonics crystal fibers and Bragg gratings, side illumination languished, almost forgotten, between 1995 and 2003. However, little by little, interest grew in Europe, Brazil, India, Canada, South Korea, China, Australia and Hong Kong. The numbers are finally starting to paint a better picture: in the first 14 years, between 1989 and 2003, there were only 10 papers, patents, thesis and reports prepared about this technique. In the following 11 years, from 2004 to 2014, 47 new documents were added to this list: almost five times more.
We now fear that there will be so much work done, that it will be difficult to track it. In addition, we are witnessing what seems to be a consistent commercialization effort of this type of device. Although in its commercial infancy, optical fiber colorimeters can make measurements from multiple cuvettes using a single detection system. If the detection system is a spectrometer, this multitude of measurements can also be made simultaneously at different wavelengths. Since only one detector is required, the larger the number of samples along the fiber, the more competitive its cost per sample. As an example, an optical fiber colorimeter that can accommodate three cuvettes is already being offered at a price that is comparable to regular colorimeters. And the future is finally looking brighter: at the beginning, side illuminated fibers used fluorescent coatings attached to expensive spectrometers and excited by massive light sources. Today’s devices are inexpensive and compact technology platforms that can also be used to make absorption, scattering and index of refraction measurements. In the addition to the optical fiber colorimeter, position and chemical sensors have also been added to this list. These devices are being used with 5 mm diameter LEDs and highly sensitive and inexpensive photodiodes that can be read by regular multi-meters.
