Front extern al speak er jack. T hese m ay be alkaline or rechargeable types. W e s trongly recomm end high ca pacit y NiMH rechar geable batteries o ver alkaline t ypes f or max imum perform ance, particular ly when us ing loud volum e levels. 1.1 Installing B atterie s in the F IREST ORM 1. To install bat teries, rem ove the batt ery door. T he batter y door is located on th e side of the caller, an d is he ld in place w ith a knur led thumbs crew. 2. Orient the batter ies as p er the d irections s hown in eac h cavit y within the holder. NOT E: The batter y polarity altern ates. 3. Replace the b atter y door after the batteries are installe d. 1.2 Installing t he TX9 B attery The TX 9 transmitter op erates f rom a 9V bat tery. Ple ase note that this switch is also t he volum e control when t he unit is o perated w ithout the rem ote control. The f urther c lockwise you t urn the k nob, the loud er the unit will pla y. At this po int, the LC D displa y on the FIR ESTORM s hould display two bars “- -“. Onc e selected, re lease the button, and the sound will p lay. To sel ect a diff erent sound, simpl y press the up or down arro w buttons ag ain to your desired s ound. P lease note tha t b y pressing and holding either the up or do wn ke ys the num bers will ram p slowly at f irst, and the n increase to a faster r amp s peed. 1.4 Playing So unds w ith the T X9 Remote Co ntrol 1. Turn on the T X9 rem ote control by pressing and hold ing the “PW R” button for a f ew seconds. 2. Use the sound up or s ound do wn arrow b uttons to sc roll through your available sou nds.

The s elec tor bar highlights the sou nd that is c urrentl y selected. NOT E: When scrolling t hrou gh sounds, t he playlist w ill change in pages. The sound n um ber is displayed o n the scr een the bott om lef t side after you have pres s “SEND ”. 4. Raise your volume le vel by pres sing and ho lding the volum e up button. As you rais e the volum e level, the on screen volum e level indica tor will increm ent. You will see a mes sage appear on the scr een sa ying “Release k ey to turn of f transm itter”. As soo n as you release your h old on the butto n, the T X9 will po wer down. 2.0 ABOUT T HE SPEAKERS The FIREST ORM inc orporates t wo diff erent types of loudspeak ers. The f ront speaker is a high ef ficienc y horn with m axim um sensitivit y in the frequenc y range necess ary to repr oduce sm all anim al distress s ounds. D istress s ounds of rabbits, sm all rodents, birds, cani nes, and m any others are best r eproduc ed by using the fr ont horn onl y with the rear cone s peaker tur ned of f. This will a lso ensure m aximum battery life as p laying both sp eaker s requires almos t twice as much batter y power. The rear c one speak er is best suite d to soun ds that ha ve signif icant lower frequenc y content. T hese sounds would incl ude bear growls, m ountain lio n roars, cer tain owl hoots and som e other large m amm al sounds. T he rear speaker, however, is not as eff icient as the f ront horn. Because of this, it w ill not pla y as loud as the h orn. Un derstan d that not a ll calling soun ds will be nefit greatly from playing bot h speak ers at once. If you elec t to do this, rem em ber that batter y life will be reduced. T he internal speak ers per form admirabl y; however, you ma y encounter sit uations that require h igher volum e levels. B y connecting a larger and mor e efficient exter nal speak er(s ) to the FIRESTORM, t he volum e level can be increase d signif icantly. 2.

2 Connect ing External Spea kers The external sp eak er jacks on your FIRE STORM ac cept standard 3.5mm plugs. W hen choos ing an external sp eak er it is recom m ended to use one with an impeda nce rating of 8-ohms. NOT E: Be sure the FIR EST ORM is turned OFF befo re connect ing an external spe aker. To connec t an externa l speak er, plug the co nnector of the external speak er into one of the exter nal speak er jack s. You wil l notice that each extern al speak er jack c orresponds with one of the internal sp eak ers. For exam ple, interna l front speaker and front extern al speak er are link ed together. If you wish to have ONLY the ext ernal speak er(s ) produce soun d, you m ust disable the interna l speaker s as the interna l speak ers are not d isabled aut om atically. 2.3 Disabling In ternal Speakers Move the spe aker slide switc h to the “OF F” positio n for the des ired speak er you wish to disa ble (fr ont or back). To re-enabl e the speak er later, s impl y place the slide s witch back to the “ON” position. B y disabling t he internal speaker (s) when usi ng an extern al speaker (s), batter y life will be extende d longer than ha ving all of the speak ers operating at once. 3.0 BATTERIES A ND CHARGING Your FIRE STORM operat es on 8 “AA” batter ies. For o ptimal perf orm ance and run times, we recomm end high c apacity 20 00 mAh or greater N iMH (Nick el Metal H ydride) rechar geable cel ls rather than alkaline types. NOT E: Remove bat teries from b attery hold er when caller will n ot be used for prolong ed periods t o help p revent deep d ischa rge. W hen you ask your FIREST ORM caller to pl ay at ex trem ely loud volum e levels, the current dem and o n the batter ies is m uch m ore than alkaline c ells ca n deliver. Cons equentl y, the run t im e of these batter ies can b e very shor t. The Zinc Carbon s o-called “ Heavy Dut y” cells are express ly NOT recomm ended at all.

The perf orm ance of yo ur FIREST ORM will be m uch better with high capacit y NiMH batteries. CAUTION: N ever att empt to charg e batterie s that a re not intend ed to be recharged. This includ es b oth Zinc Carbo n and alk aline cells. Batt ery tem peratures increase at th e end of th e charge c ycle. If the tem perat ure edges to wards a dangerous level, the c harge curr ent will be i nterrupted and the gr een LED will extinguish. If exces sive temperature is not d etected, th e green LED will not b e extinguished. I t is quite p ossible f or the batter ies to be fully charge d without their tem perature rising t o the d angerous l evel. For th is reas on, the LED sh ould not be consi dered as a “f ull c harge” indic ator as it m ay or m ay not extinguish when the batt eries are f ully char ged. The batt eries are fully char ged an y time their tem perature rises s ubstanti ally above am bient. H ow long this tak es depends on ho w m uch charge has b een tak en from the batteries and how much tim e has passed s ince the las t charge. If the gre en LED goes o ut, the batteries are definite ly charged. If the gre en LED is on and t he batteries ar e cool, the y are still charg ing. If the green L ED is on and the batter ies are very warm, they are full y charged and you should term inate the c harge b y unplugging th e charger. You sho uld not p ermit the ch arge to contin ue for more than 1 2 hours u nder an y circumstan ces. T he batteries ne ed to b e recharged w hen the “Lo w Batter y” LED is b linking while the FIRE STORM is i n use. If this warning is ignored, t he FIREST ORM wil l abruptl y shut off and display “LO” on the LCD d ispla y. Batter y run time is di rectly related t o ho w loud you operate t he FIRE STORM. Using b oth speak ers at the s ame tim e rather than onl y the most appro priate o ne will hav e a negat ive impac t on run tim e. W ith both s peakers playing, expec t 3 to 10 ho urs.

Rem ember that ver y loud volum es are r arely neede d, as anim als hear m uch better than we do. 4.0 “AUX” JAC K FUNCTION The FIREST ORM is equ ipped w ith an auxiliar y jack labeled “AUX”. Ho wever, there are som e strict electrical lim its involved with this jack. If these l imits are exceeded, dam age to your FIREST ORM will result. T his dam age is not covered b y the warra nty. The electrica lly incline d will want to k no w that the jack is connected t o the dra in of an interna l Field Eff ect Trans istor with a m ax imum current rat ing of 100m A. The “tip” po larity of the 3. 5m m jack is pos itive, while t he sleev e is negati ve. If the external de vice is con nec ted with the polarit y reversed, an in ternal protection dio de within the FET will conduct, c ausing t he device to stay on constantl y. The m aximum voltage applied to th is jack m ust never exceed 15 volts. Ins tructions o n connecting various dev ices to th e “AUX” j ack are beyond th e scope of this manual. You are urged t o seek help from a knowledge able profes sional bef ore connecting any unap proved de vice to this j ack. D oing so wil l surel y cause damage to th e FIREST ORM as well as to the batteries. This dam age is not covered b y the warra nty. Unlike s ome older FOX PRO gam e calls, you cannot c onnect an external po wer source to the c harge jac k on the FIREST ORM. An ex ternal po wer sourc e can only be con nected thro ugh the bac k of the unit where t he batter y tra y connects. FOXPRO offers a replacement d oor for the FI REST ORM that is f itted w ith the appropriate j ack for connecting an external p ower su ppl y. The design of the FIRE STORM perm its the use of cer tain external power sources, s o long as som e precautio ns are obs erved. The 8- cell int ernal batter y pack will ser ve about 98 perc ent of the users a bout 98 percent of the tim e. This mak es for a caller that is com pact and lightw eight, high ly portabl e, and has very.

Ho wever, we recog nized tha t there m ay be tim es when extended ru n-tim es and additional loudness are m ore im portant than light weight and absolute porta bilit y. You can hav e the best of both worlds with the FIRESTORM. By connect ing a large ex ternal 12- volt batter y to the external po wer adapter replacem ent door (sold separatel y at FOX PRO), you can operat e the FIRESTORM a nd obta in run-tim es meas ured in da ys rather than ho urs. T he internal NiMH batter y pack supplies 9.6 vol ts to the po wer am plifier, whil e an external batter y can sup ply up to 14 volts. T his additio nal vo ltage will off er an increase in power out put to the s peak ers, equating to additiona l loudness. But there is a d ouble-edge d swor d involved her e. B y giving the user th e abilit y to get mor e power from the am plifier, there is also a m uch greater chanc e of causing dam age to the built-in speak ers. F or this reas on, we recom m end using one of our larg e exter nal speak ers, s uch as the SP1 08, if you reall y need to, say, call cro ws from the nex t count y. Not onl y are these speak ers m ore efficient, the y will have n o problem dealing with the ex tra power. NOT E: If you must use extreme v olume w ithou t the external sp eaker, u se only the fron t horn. T he rear co ne speak er is som ew hat more delicate than the f ront horn. Pl ease be carefu l with the vo lume control, and remember th ese caut ions w hen usin g an external b atter y: 1. NEVER connec t an ex ternal batter y to the ch arge jack. 2. NEVER connec t a batter y or po wer suppl y capable of delivering m or e than 15 volts to the ch arge jack. 3. NEVER char ge the ex ternal batter y while it is connecte d to the FIRESTORM. 4. ALW AYS use a 5 am p (max) fuse in the pos itive batter y lead. 5. ALW AYS act respons ibly with t he volum e control to pr event spe aker damage. 6. For m aximum poss ible loudness, use one of our opt ional externa l speaker s, such as the S P108.

T he screen wi ll illuminate and displa y “FOXPRO”. After a br ief pause, you. As soo n as you release your h old on the butto n, the T X9 will po wer down. 6.3 Playing So unds The TX 9 remote control features a gra phic disp la y that shows the names of the sounds load ed in the unit.
