how to manually set a power commander

Pushing the button repeatedly will move the light up (richening the mixture). When the two center lights are lit up this is the “0” setting. This allows the settings to be saved to memory. And if you need additional help, please feel free to contact us. The device connects to a motorcycle's wiring harness and allows the user to load in preset mappings for fuel injection and ignition settings. Installing a Power Commander involves connecting the device directly to your bike's Electronic Control Module -- a job best left to a qualified mechanic if you're not familiar with engine electronics. Once connected, however, the Power Commander is a simlpe device to operate, allowing for hassle-free tuning of your machine. Step 1 Hold down all three buttons on the face of the Power Commander unit and turn on the bike's ignition. Release all the buttons once the engine is idling normally. The Power Commander manual recommends waiting approximately 20 seconds before making any adjustments. As you press each button, the Fuel Richness Gauge will display a quantity for each of the three areas. Step 3 Tap the button once to increase the richness of the fuel mixture, noting the increasing level on the Fuel Richness Gauge. Increasing the richness will increase acceleration and throttle response, but may also increase wear on the engine. Hold each button down to decrease the fuel richness where necessary. Step 4 Think about how your engine reacts at different speeds. Allow the bike to idle for another 15 to 20 seconds after completing your adjustments. This will cause the Power Commander to save any changes you have made. Tip Versions of the Power Commander available in 2010 allow you to create and edit your own carburetor mappings using a desktop or laptop computer and a USB connection. Warning If you have had DynoJet or other professional team tailor a mapping just for you, the best thing you can do is leave it alone.

Can I buy the software and cable I need to program it from you? What does the “SE” mean? The first version of Windows 98 did not properly support USB devices. If you go into “Control Panel” in Windows and double click the “System” icon the version number is displayed. If the version number is 4.10.2222, it is the “SE” version. Where do I get these? We have also put copies of the necessary drivers in a folder named Win98 on the Power Commander CD. What should I check? The PCIIIusb can quickly drain (about 20 minutes of use) a new battery, so make sure to not leave it plugged in longer than necessary.

Also, make sure the cable is pushed all the way into the PCIIIusb’s port. Sometimes the connector needs a fair amount of pressure to fully seat it. If the unit is not powered up, the computer will only see a USB device being plugged in, but will not allow the software to communicate. If a battery has been plugged in for around 5 minutes, it may be too low on power to allow good communication. What does that mean? Make sure that the ignition switch is on, the kill switch is in position, and the USB cable is firmly connected to both the Power commander and the computer. Make sure that the unit is staying powered up (green light will be lit on the face of the unit) and the your cable is connected. Applying ample pressure is sometimes required. Is this normal Can I buy the software and cable I need to program it from you? The USB cable is a USB to Mini-B cable and it can be purchased at any computer store. If you would still like to purchase a CD you can do so by going to: Power Commander Replacement Parts Purchase If you are using a Power Commander then while communicating to the software press one, and the highlighted area will represent that button. Unplug the USB cable from the programmer and switch USB ports on the computer. If the error still comes up, try switching the USB port to another one and restart the computer while the programmer is plugged into the USB cable. This should refresh the USB port. Power to the programmer does not need to be attached. When window with CD contents opens - Right click on Setup.exe and select Run as Administrator. This will launch the Flash installer with UAC turned off temporarily. Short term solution 2: Bypass the Flash installer and run the PC3 setup file manually. When window with CD contents opens navigate to the FS Command folder and search for PC3Setup.exe. Once clicked Windows will ask you to block or allow select allow. Short term solution 3: Customer to turn off UAC on their Windows account ( need to have Admin Rights).

To do this The user needs to go to their Control Panel- select User Accounts. From there select their account profile. Once their account opens ther will be an option (if they have admin rights) to turn off UAC. They will then be required to re-Start their computer. Once complete run the CD as usual. Long term solution: I will look into other ways to build the Installation CD, The FS Command method is outdated and prone to these type of problems. There are other ways to accomplish the scope of the installation CD but will require some time to deploy. If yours is not reading “zero” at idle with the motor at normal temperature, then use the following procedure to correct it. In the Power Commander Control Center Software, go to menu “Power Commander Tools” and look for the tool to calibrate the throttle. The bike should always be running when setting the throttle position, as the voltage the sensor sends out can vary between when the bike is at “key on” and “motoring running”. The bike also needs to be at fully warmed up to its normal operating temperature. This happens with high flow exhausts that allow more fresh air to be pulled into the pipe, causing the exhaust temperature to rise and detonate any unburnt fuel. Ways to reduce and possibly eliminate this popping are listed below and can vary between Harley-Davidson motorcycles and others. Exhaust leaks can cause decel pop, make sure the exhaust is sealed completely at the motor, and at any other connections. Harley-Davidson: Highlight the zero percent column from 2,000 rpm to redline and enter in values from -40 to -50. Run the bike and see if the popping has reduced. Sometimes, the throttle position may not show zero at idle and should be correctly adjusted with the bike at full operating temperature to make sure it is reading zero. Highlight the zero percent column and instead of using negative numbers, try adding fuel to the map. Start with putting a value of 25 in the cells and see if the popping has reduced.

http://cornerwebstudio.com/images/brennan-jb7-manual.pdf

Advance the timing in the zero percent column 3 to 5 degrees to see if popping has been reduced. If this is the case no adjustments made by the Power Commander, or any piggyback device, can help reduce this problem. On bikes that keep the injectors on during deceleration adjustments to the fuel table in the zero percent fuel column from 2,000 rpm to redline may help reduce popping. A value of positive or negative 15-40 should be added and can reduce popping if it is still noticeable. This allows the settings to be saved to memory. If you make adjustments with the PCIII in the closed loop area the O2 sensor will sense these changes and the ECM will alter the fuel curve accordingly. If you want to have full fuel control over the entire RPM range of your bike then you will need to bypass the closed loop area which the O2 eliminators will accomplish. If you are looking for the best fuel economy and not worried about making changed to the closed loop area you can leave the stock O2 sensors connected and still make changes outside of the closed loop area with the Power Commander. When you turn the key on, the fuel pump gets power and primes the fuel circuit. When this happens, the injectors get power, and the Power Commander also gets power and lights up. After a few moments, the fuel pump has pressurized the system, and usually shuts off. If the fuel pump shuts off, the injectors’ loose power, and the Power Commander shuts off. If you attempt to start the bike when the Power Commander is off, the bike may take longer to start than normal, until the fuel pump comes back on. The fuel pump may come on instantly, after a few engine revolutions, or on some bikes seemingly not at all. If the fuel pump does not come on, the bike will not start. We recommend starting the bike once you turn the key on. Do not wait for the fuel pump to shut off, or a check engine light to go out.

One day it just started running rough (like it was a cylinder was misfiring) so I disconnected the Power Commander and it went away. What could be the problem with the unit? Do I need to wrap my Power Commander in a plastic bag? The only way a map can be “erased” is to use a computer to load a new one in place of it. One day it just started running rough (like it was a cylinder was misfiring) so I disconnected the Power Commander and it went away. What could be the problem with the unit? If the Power Commanders’ wiring harness is cut or nicked by the frame or sharp bracket it can short to ground. Once this happens a number of symptoms may be present, overly rich running, hesitation, stalling, etc. We suggest very closely inspecting the harness for any signs of damage. Small cuts may be difficult to see. If any damage is found, you can simply retape that area, unless the wiring is significantly shorted. Do I need to wrap my Power Commander in a plastic bag? It is not necessary to cover the unit to protect it from water. The most important thing to is to make sure the port plugs are used. If the light is red, connections may need to be checked. The module should show green as soon as the bike is running which will show communication with the bike. Reloading firmware may also help. If so, the firmware for the ignition module will need to be reloaded into it for the unit to come back on. Please contact Dynojet regarding this process. Change the spacing until the light is green and the bike should start. Verify you are on the correct one. The TPS connector will be on one end of the throttle bodies. The light bar appears to stick at the top. Uncheck the box next to Diagnostic Port Enabled. Click OK. Click Send Map. There are two identical sets of connectors on this bike. There is a set next to the fuel rail and there is one set next to the shock under the seat and battery. If they are plugged in down by the shock, the unit will not work.

5percent-design-action.com/upload/users/files/79-kz1000-manual.pdf

The unit should be plugged into the set next to the fuel rail. It should be installed on the red wire with a yellow tracer on the GRAY connector side of the ECU. There is a yellow wire with a red tracer on the BLACK connector for the ECU that can easily be mistaken for the correct one. Also, verify that the connector is securely fastened and has not cut through the wire. If it cut through the wire, the Power Commander still may get a throttle position signal, but it may be erratic. The power wire (Red wire with bullet connector terminals) will need to be relocated to a keyed, solid 12 volt power source. Verify you are on the correct one. The TPS connector will be on one end of the throttle bodies. The Throttle Position Sensor on this bike is located on the left hand side of the throttle bodies. There is the same connected on the back side of the throttle bodies that is for the MAP sensor, this is the incorrect location for the PCIII to be connected to. Please verify in the instructions. The ground wires for the Power Commander must be placed exactly per the instructions for the unit. Any other locations may not supply a secure ground path and cause issues. Start at the throttle bodies and trace down to the first set of connectors that you come to. This is the correct set. There is another set further down the harness that the connectors will fit into. The correct set is on the left hand side of the frame. There is an identical connector on the left hand side above the air box, right next to where the TPS connector is located. The light bar appears to stick at the top. The Power Commander needs to be plugged into the grey one for proper operation. This keeps water out of the computer and if not installed, the sides of the ECM have openings that allow liquid right into the circuitry. In some cases, the computer can be removed and dried out for a couple days and it will function like normal, but this is not guaranteed.

Make sure that the rubber boot, if it was installed, does not have any holes and is securely placed to keep water out as much as possible. These plugs still seem to allow water by and it causes corrosion to start on the Power Commander connector. We recommend putting di-electric grease in our connector before plugging them together so that the moisture is blocked. Also, relocation of the connector to under the right side cover, on top of the ECM, may be beneficial. In most cases the fuel available in Europe will make a bike run much richer than the fuel available in the US. For this reason we recommend that you use a map that coincides with the region in that you live in. Although we have seen some European maps work well for US bikes so it may be worth trying. For a better experience, please enable JavaScript in your browser before proceeding. It may not display this or other websites correctly. You should upgrade or use an alternative browser. SLP had me add 3 bars (6) more fuel to the top end when I loaded the map for their Performance Edition Kit because I was running fuel with ethanol. In an effort to try to do this I even went to Youtube to see how to do it and it looks easy on an ATV. You plug in your 9 volt battery to the Power Commander, turn on the key, press down all three buttons and when they all flash, you adjust the area of the power curve from which you would like to either add or remove fuel. Well we don't have a battery. I tried it with the sled off and nothing and then I tried it with the sled running an still no luck. What am I missing here? Now I have a PC5 and everyone has a labtop but you still need to plug into the PC ?? At least I thought that was the only way. I know they are working on a app to hook up to the 5 with BT. That will be cool. Call PC I had to a little while ago and the guy I talked to out of las Vagas was great and fixed me up. Good luck FB It can't really be that hard, can it. Then you can adjust.

PS Steve is no longer with Dynojet I sure couldn't do both at the same time. Trying to hold them down as the sled starts will be a trick for my helper as well. OK, if we (my helper and I) can hold the buttons down as the sled starts. Do I still need the 9 volt battery hooked up to the Power Commander. Because at that point the sled will be running on its own power and shouldn't need a battery. Right? I guess I didn't need to dig out the 9 volt battery connector after all. Piece of cake. Hey, I seem to remember, didn't you have a map for a 2009 M8 with the SLP Performance Edition Kit installed? Two people are not needed. I have one on my m1000,you just have to be fast. Now, if I plug in the 9 volt adapter, can I use this in place of starting the sled. If so, do I once again have 3 seconds from the time I plug the adapter in to press all three buttons? The PCIII goes through a scrolling LED light show during its boot-up time, so you can press the 3 buttons as long as the LED's are scrolling.Register on our forums to post and have added features. The PCFC is designed to achieve a target AFR of 13.6:1. To use this PCFC you must retain your stock O2 sensor. It is not recommended to alter the values in the highlighted area unless instructed to do so by a PCFC technician. This allows you to modify the stock settings and change the fuelling so that the air to fuel ratio can be set at an optimum level. For most riders, the appeal of a Power Commander is that it enables you to boost your bike’s horsepower and torque. Is a Power Commander Worth It. Installing a Power Commander won’t improve the bike’s horsepower or torque on its own. To get the best from a Power Commander you have to tune it to suit your motorcycle. This involves modifying the map or uploading a new map. You can plug it in and upload a pre-configured map for your bike, which will improve the throttle response as it can adjust the fuelling to suit. When your bike comes from the manufacturer, it has to meet emissions regulations and so the ECU isn’t set to produce peak power or even perfect throttle response. The Power Commander piggybacks onto the system and with a map designed for your bike, you can improve the engine response by smoothing out the fuelling. A proper installation will be done in conjunction with a dyno run. The mechanic will run your standard bike up on the dyno, note the areas where it can be improved and then after fitting the Power Commander, they’ll be able to amend the fuelling across the rev range, possibly leaning it out in some areas or making it richer in others. This smooths out the air:fuel ratio so that it is optimised for your engine. If you fit an aftermarket air filter or an exhaust system, you’ll change the rate at which air can be fed into the engine and the exhaust gases removed. This can mean the bike runs badly and the throttle response is fluffy.

A Power Commander will help you adjust the fuelling to not only crisp up the throttle response but also make the most of this improved intake and expulsion rate, to add in more fuel and air and help the engine produce more power and torque. What’s the difference between a Power Commander III and V They do exactly the same job but the 5 is about half the size of the PC3. However, both maintain, customise and tune your bike’s air to fuel ratio. You can quickly download maps to both, making them Plug and Play. The PC5 has a few more features. It is easier to connect a secondary fuel module and a quick-shifter with a Power Commander V. Another feature of the 5 is the ability to configure by throttle position and also by the gear you’re in. This makes the PCV the best option for sportsbikes with two banks of injectors (8 in total). If you have an older machine, (from 2000 to 2010) the PC3 will probably be a better option as there will be more fitments available for older bikes (plus lots more second-hand ones available). Another main difference between the 3 and the 5 is that the 3 will have three buttons to help you to tune it. However, those buttons are only a rough guide. The 5 doesn’t have those buttons but any adjustments should be made on the computer, the manual buttons on the PC3 are crude. Where to buy a Power Commander. If you want to save money, you can always check out eBay and grab a second-hand PC3 or PCV. There are a few bargains out there. However, if you want to ensure you’re buying a unit that’s not faulty in any way then it’s best to buy a new one. Ben's Pick Power Commander V The most advanced Power Commander from Dynojet. The PCV allows you to plug and play and adjust fuelling with preset or custom maps, which can be downloaded onto the device. It can be programmed to work with a quick shifter, you can auto-tune or add in two maps, one for fuel economy and one for outright performance.

The Auto-Tune monitors the exhaust gases and then sends this info back to the PC5 box, which then adjusts the fuelling to suit. If you like to change your parts regularly or if you can’t get to a dyno centre, an auto-tune box is a good solution for you. Myths about Power Commanders There are a lot of myths about Power Commanders, here we dispel the common ones. The PC is a sealed unit which is waterproof. If it’s installed badly (ie in an exposed position or with cables that have rubbed on another part, exposing the wires) then it could malfunction. The map is stored on a solid-state memory, which means if you lose power the map won’t be erased. The Power Commander map can only be tuned with the right software on a PC computer. There is no Mac version available. Installing a Power Commander This video below gives you a really clear step-by-step guide on how to install a Power Commander. You don’t have to be handy with the spanners but you do need to know what you’re up against before you start removing parts from your bike. If you can adjust your chain, you can fit a PCV. Just allow an hour to get it all done. Where To Download Power Commander Maps You can download the firmware, software and a user guide from this link here. You can download a map (or various maps) for your bike by visiting the Dynojet UK website here. Choose your bike from the dropdown menu and then look on the left-hand side menu for the “See all downloads for my bike” link. There are alternatives to the Power Commander from companies such as Dynatek, Thundermax, Cobra, Techlusion, Yoshimura and Juice Box. However, Dynojet’s Power Commander is by far the dominant force in the motorcycle market. Every dyno operator will know how to install and configure a Power Commander, plus they will probably have worked on a similar bike or setup to yours, meaning they can refer to their existing maps and dyno charts to get the best from your bike.

ECU Flash Another popular alternative to a Power Commander is an ECU reflash. There is a stock map on your bike’s ECU and most engine tuners will be able to get access to it. If you bolt on an exhaust or other performance modifications, your tuner can dyno your bike to see how it runs. They can then download the map that’s on your ECU, tweak it to improve the fuelling and then reupload it (or flash it) back onto your ECU. Power Commander FAQs Can a Power Commander damage your bike. It is possible but not likely. A Power Commander gives you the ability to adjust your motorcycle’s air to fuel ratio, which means you could set this so the bike runs too lean. However as the Power Commander can’t send any current to the ECU it is very unlikely it will damage it. Do You Need a Power Commander with a full exhaust system. You don’t need one but the chances of the bike running as well as it could after you’ve fitted aftermarket parts like an exhaust or air filter are minimal. A Power Commander gives you the ability to optimise the bike’s fuelling. Do they make Power Commanders for cars. No, they don’t. Cars tend to have their ECUs flashed or you can install some systems like a Carberry ECU. Is there a Power Commander 4? No they went from a PC3 to a PC5 (or PCV). Click to see full answer Correspondingly, does a power commander make a big difference.

Generally, the benefits of a power commander will work best with a full system exhaust (not a slip-on), as it creates more power and allows for a wider range of adjustments. If you're pairing with a high end full system, like an Akrapovic Exhaust, you'll see much better overall performance when paired with a PCV. Also Know, do you need a Power Commander for a dyno tune. Yes you have to have a power commander to tune, that is what they tune. In respect to this, does a Power Commander increase horsepower. The Power Commander is a tuning tool to adjust fuel, and on some models ignition timing. Just adding a Power Commander to a completely stock vehicle usually does not increase peak horsepower. It usually will improve drivability, throttle response, and mid-range horsepower and torque. Is a Power Commander bad for your bike. Power Commanders do not harm your bike. It is nothing more than a piggyback ECU. If the goal is to have your bike run more smoothly, a Power Commander would go a long way in achieving it. The Power Commander is used by motorcycles as a way of boosting their engine performance to a higher level of horsepower than a rider might get from the motorcycle's stock engine performance. You can change how the engine performs, but you lose much of the finesse of the ECU control. No, all Power Commanders utilize a nonvolatile memory (it does not require constant power to maintain it). The only way a map can be “erased” is to use a computer to load a new one in place of it. Like 30,000grand? about 90k for 4 wheel dynojet. You should not need this part unless you are doing dual band (with two O2 sensors) auto tuning. Not universal, specific to each model. Your bike would not use a power commander, instead it would be a jet kit. This means that the new parts are clear from any sensors or meters that the ECU (Engine Control Unit) may need to run the vehicle. As a result, Cat-Back exhaust systems do not require an updated tune.

If you get a full system specifically designed and tuned to your bike however, it should bolt straight on without issue, if the manufacturer of the exhaust has done their job properly. Note I said “generally.” Depending on your elevation, bike, other modifications, and a whole host of other stuff, like which muffler you chose, you may still find a need to change up the fueling. There are also additional costs for a tuning device (or a tuning license) for Fuel-injected bikes. OK so I need some help programming it. I know you can download stuff for it (I need a USB cable tho ) but my question for you guys is: Does anyone know how to program via the 3 touch buttons. Know any links I can use with those instructions. I have went to the powercommander website: but no luck on manual programming You currently have 0 posts. You'll get more bhp through the range, better mpg and peace of mind. Bloody Yanks, Pete. You currently have 0 posts. My new toy. A 2005 Yamaha MT-01 1700cc torque monster. It's the battery adapter that you have to order from DJ.You currently have 0 posts. 500 RWHP, seats 5, and runs low 11's in the 1320. Yep, that'll do!But peterrose is right, in order to maximize your PCIII it is best to get it tuned and have a professional map done. Good luck, either way that kicks ass that you have one. Kindof scares me that he forgot to mention it! LOLAnyways, if anyone knows how to program this thing manually let me know. I just kind of want to know how it works. Any info links too please post.
