Early sex researchers William Masters and Virginia Johnson studied sexual response by observing live sex acts and documenting changes in the body. They divided the sexual response cycle into four stages: excitement, plateau, orgasm, and resolution. Sex therapist Helen Singer Kaplan later proposed a three-phase model (desire, excitement, and orgasm), noting that sexual response is also cognitive and psychological.
