Both books are personal for the author, a veteran whose brother died in the Vietnam War and whose son and grandson served in the Iraq War. Author Biography Myers was born Walter Milton Myers on August 12, 1937, in Martinsburg, West Virginia, and later changed his name to honor his adoptive parents. Myers's biological mother, Mary Myers, died while giving birth to his younger sister. Afterward, his biological father, George Ambrose Myers, sent him to live with Herbert and Florence Dean in New York City's Harlem neighborhood. Herbert worked as a shipping clerk, and Florence, George's first wife, was a factory worker and English teacher. As a boy, Walter struggled in school and suffered from a speech impediment. A teacher told him he might communicate better by writing, and Myers was soon filling his notebooks with poetry and short stories. But he dropped out of high school when he learned that his family could not afford to send him to college. Myers joined the army when he turned seventeen, serving from 1954 to 1957. The experience would serve as the inspiration for the 1988 novel Fallen Angels and its 2008 follow-up, Sunrise over Fallujah. Myers held a variety of odd jobs after he left the army, mostly as a factory or clerical worker. He married and fathered two children, Karen and Michael Dean, and he continued to write through it all, publishing articles in the National Enquirer and Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine. Myers's first story, the picture book Where Does the Day Go ? (1969), won a Council on Interracial Books for Children contest. Additional picture books followed, but in 1975 Myers released his first young-adult novel, Fast Sam, Cool Clyde, and Stuff. Through Robin's account, we begin to understand the realities behind the headlines — about the horror of war, and what war means to young people and their families. He's served in the army himself. His brother was killed in Vietnam, and his oldest son is a career officer. And in the twenty years since Fallen Angels was published, Walter has received hundreds of letters from kids and families touched by war — and this is one of the things that inspired him to write a companion novel about the new war of our times. When my brother, who followed me into the army, was killed in Vietnam, it was a rude awakening. War has suddenly become personal. I needed to write about it in a way that countered the romantic ideas. Fallen Angels was the result. But my oldest son, a career officer, was in that war and there was nothing sterile or gamelike in it for me. I saw the American sweep into Baghdad in Operation Iraqi Freedom being hailed as an easy victory. But I knew that there were men and women being killed, that behind the easy headlines there were tragedies being played out. Tragedies that will be with us for decades as our young warriors recover from terrible wounds and the emotional trauma of their experiences. There is the need to honor the brave men and women who have stepped up to defend our country. There is also the grim reality of what they will face. War is a difficult thing to talk about for those who are involved in it, and for them to explain to others.

In the twenty years since Fallen Angels was published, many women have thanked me for helping them understand why their husbands were so reticent to speak about their wartime experiences, and I have had hundreds of letters from young people who, for the first, time, had some idea of what their fathers had gone through. These letters, and the quiet conversations in bookstores with people who had read the book a decade earlier, made me want to shoulder the responsibility of again writing about America at war. Eventually they will also be the ones who decide whether a war is necessary or can be avoided. They need to do a lot of thinking before either picking up a weapon or casting a vote to go to war.As he is immersed in the jungle war, with alternating stretches of boredom and terror, he is forced to face his fears, test his courage, and question his role in the difficult situations he must face along with his squad. Told from Richie's perspective, as a teenager forced to grow up too fast, Fallen Angels is a fast-paced war story that challenges the reader to ponder the toll that war takes on the human spirit. Why doesn't he try to go to college. How does he feel about his family. How does this affect his friendships in the army? How did each get in the army.What is his importance to the squad. What makes him different from the others? How does the experience of being in Vietnam affect the way the different squad members react to each other? Describe their reaction to Lt. Carroll's death. How does it fail? Describe how friendships develop and enmities arise within the squad members.
Would Richie and Peewee have been close friends if they had met back home. Why does Peewee pick fights with guys bigger than he is? Are Captain Stewart's decisions based on him wanting to become a major, as some soldiers suggest. Does he understand at the end of the book. What acts or words separate them from the others? The climate, the causes of the war, the inclusion of women in the combat forces, all create a contrast to that other war. But the experience of war itself is chillingly similar. Confusion over their duties and changing situations make their job hard to understand, but they do their best until they are sent on one mission that strikes sheer terror into their hearts and tests the courage of everyone involved. Why did he decide to join the army. Why does he write his most honest letters to his Uncle Richie? How does each of them relate to Robin. Would they have become friends if they were not in Iraq facing the difficulties of life there? How does it affect Jonesy and Marla. How does it change their perception of the war? What is her response to the attack on her in Fallujah? Why are they so different. Why are their living arrangements so different. What happens when the mission goes wrong? How is it different from the places the soldiers came from back home. Are there any similarities. How does it compare with the villages that Robin's squad visits outside Baghdad? Do they get used to the experience of living in Iraq? Discuss these comparisons. How is war the same as a sporting competition; how is it different? Why does Myers choose the incident in Fallujah to highlight in the name of the book. How does heroism manifest itself in this story. Which of the characters do you think is a hero? Sunrise Over Fallujah was published in 2010—after Barack Obama was elected on a platform that criticized the Iraq War. And you can definitely feel that hindsight in the book. Using scenes where native Iraqis share their opinions, scenes involving IEDs, and discussions on the difference between the attacks and what's being reported, Myers paints a picture of a war that doesn't go as planned. In other words: you're going to need to watch about two dozen animal fail videos, and maybe also drink a Big Gulp-sized cocoa, after you finish this book. It's can be pretty tough going. Myers isn't really taking a stance on whether war is good or bad; his only message is that war isolates people. And that message is pretty hard to argue with. See? Writing about the reality of a current conflict for children, or even young adults, is of necessity a balancing act -- how much to show, how far to go, in accurate depictions of horrific events. Veteran author Walter Dean Myers walks that fine line about as perfectly as it can be done. He doesn't pull his punches, but neither does he go overboard. He has just enough violence and swearing to keep it realistic without wallowing in them, and thereby gives about as accurate a picture of the fog of war in this particularly foggy war as one can give to children. The book is moving, but the reader never gets to know the characters well enough to be truly shattered by the things that happen to them. Again, a balance -- there's just enough emotional involvement, but not too much. And he shows the boredom and the humor that are just as much a part of army life as violence and death, even in a war zone. What I did know was that I wanted to do my part.
