So: buy this as a handy guide to all things hip and happening, but also invest in an indexed street map so you can get where you want to go.The book assumes you know the city, and is scant with providing addresses. As a point of reference, cheapest hotel listed in here is currently 155 euros per night. I found this guide of no use to me on my trip last week (first time), although I will keep it as a reference book for work. I do intend to buy the London Wallpaper guide to discover a few more funky places on home turf as I imagine this will be more beneficial. If you are looking for something different in Athens - a hip restaurant or some modern architecture, then this may be the book for you. However, if you are a first time visitor to Athens, you will probably be better with the Insight City Guide to Athens (which is chunky but has everything you actually need, like history, walking tours, and maps!) or the Lonely Planet Best of Athens (handbag sized and good maps).I expected much more on the Bauhaus and Eclectic buildings but there's very little.Concise and practical as it's small. We had bought a lonely planet for the trip too but barely used it. Has everything you're looking for in it.

I wavered between a four and five star review simply because of currency issues: the book was written in the middle of the Icelandic banking boom, and how the mighty have fallen since then. I really like the Wallpaper guides in general, though, and this one specifically. I decided on five stars in that the biggest changes newcomers would be likely to notice is lower prices in many areas since the book was published, making Iceland an even more appealing travel option. The recommendations in the book are still generally quite valid. Like the other books in the series, this is a very small guidebook, which means it's easy to carry with you. It is fine for actually carrying around Reykjavik, unlike some of the gigantic guides, but you will definitely need another more in-depth guide for planning and reference.I have yet to road test it, but so far, so good. I have been happy with most of my Wallpaper Guides. The only problem is that the cover fell off the first copy I ordered. Amazon quickly sent me a replacement, but the cover is falling off the second one, too. I'm really careful with my books, so I know it's not me. I think because the guide is from 2008, the glue on the binding is old and is becoming defective.

I had been troubled, though, by the large number of negative reviews on Amazon about the various City Guides, and really hesitated about whether the Reykjavik guide would be of any use to me. My conclusion, however, was that while these guides are in no way comprehensive (don't expect bus routes or details on a large number of attractions), they are put together with an extraordinary amount of discerning taste. I tried several of the restaurants and shops listed in the guide, and found all of them to be memorable--the recommendations of coffee shops in Reykjavik are especially good, much better than those listed in the other guides I consulted. The book is full of photographs, and a delightful size--if you'd like something to give you a few carefully thought-out ideas as well as a lot of lush photography to get you in the mood for your trip, I would highly recommend this guide.It doesn't hold you by the hand and give you endless information that you could figure out on your own or will never need. This guide provides basic information about the main attractions. You can visit Reykjavik with this guide and see everything that you need to see, at least for the first time. The photography is plentiful and gorgeous. Each listing is accompanied by a photograph. Another plus is that the guide is small. It's not going to take much room in your luggage. This Wallpaper guide isn't for the budget conscious. The recommended hotels and restaurants are generally higher end. In short, this guide is tasteful, compact, and gives the traveler everything she needs to know!Recommended for the armchair traveler. The photos are gorgeous and evocative; the writing is concise with choice details, and neither overly bland nor overly colorful. I'd love to get every book in this series.Small but perfectly formed and very cheap, they will not fail to add some lovely, trendy, edgy recommendations to your exploration of a city.
