0 out of 5 stars It contains essential information for yachtsmen sailing the California coast and offshore islands. It has many useful simplified charts and photos of approaches to harbors and anchorages. It also has a useful chapter on local weather forecasting. Although California weather is mostly pretty benign, it can also make life very difficult to any sailor who is unprepared for bad weather, and Fagan provides plenty of good advice on how to predict it, and how to deal with it.Heck, I was married on Catalina. Starting to read Fagan's book, it became quickly evident that I didn't know anything about this rich area. Fagan breaks down multi micro climates into detailed and descriptive blocks, highlighting which routes will show off what type of weather in different parts of the year. If you already know what the weather will be like in Santa Cruz Channel in October, or when Cuyler Harbor turns into a dangerous lee shore (and what conditions to watch for in advance), then I suppose you don't need this book. If you're going to be harbor hopping along the mainland, you can probably get by without it. But if you're going to be heading off the grid into the fringes of the no-kidding Pacific, you'd be foolish to read Fagan's book first. Charlie's Charts, although useful in other areas (primarily down in Mexico) do not cut the mustard against Fagan. Highly recommended, and if you only have sailing book related to Southern California this should easily be it.Very glad I have it. This is a go-to research book for me now.Lots of great tips -, as always, trust but verify. Some information is outdated. But not enough to keep this from being a go-to guide for Channel Islands hopping. It has great details, suggestions and pictures. There isnt another book out there for SoCal as good as this one. I think without the book, you would miss out on some real gems. Please try again. Please try again. Please try again. Please try your request again later.

He is a Contributing Editor to American Archaeology and Discover Archaeology magazines, and formerly wrote a regular column for Archaeology Magazine. He serves on the Editorial Boards of six academic and general periodicals and has many popular magazine credits, including Scientific American and Gentleman's Quarterly. Fagan has been an archaeological consultant for many organizations, including National Geographic Society, Time-Life, Encyclop?dia Britannica, and Microsoft Encarta. He has lectured extensively about archaeology and other subjects throughout the world at many venues, including the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, the National Geographic Society, the San Francisco City Lecture Program, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Getty Conservation Institute. He has worked as a consultant for the BBC, RKO, and many Hollywood production companies on documentaries. He received the Society's first Public Education Award in 1997. He has written many critiques of contemporary archaeology and has advocated non-traditional approaches, as well as writing extensively on the role of archaeology in contemporary society. His approach is a melding of different theoretical approaches, which focuses on the broad issues of human prehistory and the past. He is a strong advocate of multidisciplinary approaches to such issues as climate change in the past. Over the years, he has written a series of well-known textbooks that provide accurate summaries of the latest advances in archaeological method and theory and world prehistory. These are designed for beginners and avoid both confusing jargon and major theoretical discussion, which is inappropriate at this basic level. His approach melds traditional cultural history with more recent approaches, with a major emphasis on writing historical narrative using archaeological data and sources from other disciplines.

Fagan is also well known for his public lectures on a wide variety of archaeological and historical topics, delivered to a broad range of archaeological and non-archaeological audiences.
